TARPORLEY PARISH COUNCIL NEWSLETTER

tarporley Village Square Project

It was recognised in the tarporley Parish Plan that the village lacks a focal open space such as may be used for public events or merely as a quiet area for relaxation. Although the area surrounding the chestnut tree has been used in recent years for the popular Christmas lights switch on, it is not ideally suited to such gatherings, owing to the proximity of busy roads and the very restricted circulation space between the mound and the shops. Also, any event held there during daylight hours will block access to the shops. In the Parish Plan consultations, the idea of using part of the glebe land behind the village sign as a small park or square produced a favourable response. there followed discussions between the parish council and St. Helens PCC, as the land concerned is owned by the church. Following agreement in principal, Groundwork Cheshire were approached and carried out a consultation with members of St. Helens church. this was based on an outline concept produced by Groundwork, who were responsible for the design of the very successful playground. this again produced a generally favourable response, most of the adverse comment being attributable to the generalised approach used in the presentation. to avoid this in further consultation, Groundwork were commissioned to produce a more detailed conceptual plan for presentation to the residents of tarporley and to assist subsequently in grant applications, should the project receive approval. this 10 To advertise call 01244 350398 is now approaching completion and full consultation with residents is expected to take place in September. Broadly, the proposal is to move the churchyard wall and gates a modest distance further back and to realign the service road to the Done Room slightly to the right. the resulting space would form the basis for a surprisingly large square. Some thinning of trees would open up views of the church from the square and High Street. In line with tarporley Parish Council policy, disturbance to mature trees would be kept to an absolute minimum and any removed would be replaced with native varieties. A recent survey by the church authorities revealed that a number of trees at the rear of the area are in a dangerous or diseased state and their removal will provide an opportunity for a long overdue renewal programme. the question of naming has been raised and Jubilee Square has been suggested. this could be appropriate, as it is next to Jubilee Building, built in 1897, and close to St. Helens church tower, which houses Westminster chimes installed to commemorate the diamond jubilee of Queen Victoria in that year. Incidentally, it is estimated that the chimes have sounded in excess of four million times since installation a tribute to Victorian engineering. to create an equally long lived feature to commemorate our present queens diamond jubilee would be entirely fitting.

Reefs dessert is among the best in Cheshire

A yOuNG chef from Kelsalls Royal Oak pub has been invited to prepare the dessert at a special awards dinner to celebrate the North Wests most talented young chefs and hosts. Reef Westons warm almond tart, poached pear, amaretto ice cream and crme anglaise was served up for 160 guests at the celebrated Nunsmere Hall. The marquee dinner last month was organised by Taste Northwest to round off a series of food events that has celebrated the regions best emerging talent. Back in April a dinner at the Royal Oak cooked by 23 year-old Reef - featured Taste Northwest director Pam Billingtons favourite dessert of the year. So she chose it for the Nunsmere meal and asked Reef to take charge of production on the night. Reef (pictured), who was born at Duddon and lives at Delamere, began learning his trade after leaving Tarporley High School. He has worked at the Royal Oak for 11 months. I love putting something on a plate that looks good, he says, and the fact that other people like it too adds up to an unreal level of job satisfaction. The event also raised money for the catering industrys benevolent charity Hospitality Action.

Students bring a little sunshine

Students at Tarporley Sixth Form College have been undertaking a community art project at Sunshine Day Nursery in Tarvin. Matthew Hill, Charlotte Dandy, Shannon Howes and Sophie Jones carried out the work in their own time and have completed a Jack and the Beanstalk mural in one of the rooms. This adds to the under the sea themed bathroom which students completed last year. The students complete community work as part of their enrichment programme, including working at Iddenshall Hall and Tarporley primary School. If you have any volunteering opportunities, contact Mr Lowe, director of Sixth Form at the school. 22 To advertise call 01244 350398

Calling all Desperate Housewives!

How many hours a week do you devote to looking after your children and running the household? According to a recent survey, we can spend up to 70 hours a week doing just that. Its a job description that would deter even the toughest applicant, with no holidays and no pay, and according to this survey we work longer shifts than a Junior Doctor! Many of us continually juggle our domestic life with full time work and it takes much planning to keep everything running smoothly. I should know, my eldest daughters are 31 and 29 and my youngest is about to go off to University. thirty-one years of juggling, many of them as a single mother and working full time. So I think I can say I understand how tough things can be!

Can we help reduce this pressure in your life?

The Bunbury Agency was established over 43 years ago by my mother when she herself could not find suitable child care for my two sisters. In those days it was not unusual for wealthier families to have a live in Nanny, whether they worked or not. today things are very different, particularly in the present economic climate. Yes, most of us want to, or have to work, and paying for child care or domestic help can use up much of what we earn. We are expected to be superwomen, so what is the solution?

Why not book an Au Pair?

An Au Pair is a single male or female between 17 and 27, who comes to live with a family in the UK in order to improve their English. They can stay for up to two years. Whilst they are not qualified child carers, they usually have experience in looking after their own siblings and babysitting other children. Au Pairs may work for 25 - 35 hours per week, helping with your children and performing some light household duties in return for their accommodation and some pocket money, usually between 70 100 per week, a very cost effective way of relieving the pressures on working mothers.
the Bunbury Agency is a member of BAPAA (the British Au Pair Agencies Association) and recruit Au Pairs in line with their code of practise, which ensures that they are thoroughly vetted in line with Home Office regulations.

SOVEREIGN DEBT CRISIS A GOO

Financial issues have hardly been out of the headlines in the last five years, ever since the credit crunch first came into the national consciousness, and the European sovereign debt crisis of the last two years has merely served to intensify the media coverage.
European Monetary Union (EMU) together. In recent times, investors have become worried that there is worse to come and that share prices will decline no matter what the industry sector or market share of companies. As a result, they often buy and sell at precisely the wrong time. The fear of missing out pulls investors in when markets are soaring, and causes them to sell when they have already fallen. Yet there are exciting and attractive investment opportunities out there. Take, for example, large blue-chip companies with a strong and healthy market position and a continuous record of generating profits and earnings during all phases of the economic cycle. Such companies have seen their prices held back along with all others as a result of high-level macroeconomic circumstances outside of their control, yet they remain attractive propositions through their proven resilience, ability to ride out the crisis and sustained long term prospects. Investors should be looking at these cash generative companies, with their strong balance sheets and more predictable profit streams. Some of the best opportunities today can be found in the telecom and pharmaceutical sectors.

So what are the opportunities for investors in what remains a tough and uncertain economic environment? Equity markets so far in 2012 have started on a much more positive note. This could be due to a realisation setting in that there is a political will to resolve the crisis coupled with a strong desire among leaders to keep

with Angela Bartlett
Q. Ive just had my 50th birthday and feel I need a change in my skin care routine now that the wrinkles are starting to show! What would you suggest? A. As you have pointed out changes in your skin start to become more visible in your 50s. The menopause can start around this age which triggers a 30% reduction in collagen leading to more skin wrinkling and you will also possibly notice an increase in dryness and dehydration, age spots and in some cases sensitivity. As with any good skin care routine a daytime moisturiser containing a sunscreen is vital all year round, and this is very important in your mid-years and beyond. Ageing skin needs to be treated gently but this is the time to strengthen, energise and replenish your skin. Choose an exfoliator which provides a gentle but thorough removal of dead skin cells to give a healthier glow to your skin and to prepare it for a more efficient penetration of serums and moisturisers which contain peptides, vitamins A,C and E. For more top tips on how to improve and maintain your skin condition in middle age and beyond please visit the newsletter page on our new website at www. angelabartlett.co.uk Q. Whats the best tool to apply foundation to your skin? A. This will depend on the type of foundation, but as liquid foundation is the most popular lets focus on that. You have a variety of different options: fingers, brush, sponge.which is best? Fingers are convenient and free! However, small traces of oil on your finger tips may decrease the longevity of your foundation so for special occasions where you need perfection all day scrap the fingers and try another tool. Makeup sponges have a very fine texture and are fairly cheap to buy. They give a good, even finish and can be moistened to give a lighter coverage of foundation, but they do absorb a lot of foundation so are not that economical to use. Foundation brushes are great; they give a good even, professional application. The bristles should be soft enough so that they do not irritate your skin, but not so soft that they are too floppy. Brushes can be expensive so look after them and wash them carefully and regularly with warm, soapy water to prevent bacteria build up.

TARPORLEY HIGH SCHOOL &

Welcome to the new arrivals

Over 160 year six pupils and teachers from Tarporley High Schools feeder primary schools visited the Conwy Centre in Anglesey before the end of the summer term. Pictured are some of the pupils who are now in year seven at Tarporley.

Getting a taste of university life

A group of 16 students were lucky enough to participate in a residential visit to Oxford university where they stayed at Balliol College and had a taste of life as an Oxford undergraduate; they met current students and received an admissions presentation as well as tours of many of the Oxford colleges! The sunshine encouraged the fearless year 12s to don boaters and have a gentle punt on the river.

Farewell to the year 13s

The year 13 Leavers Prom was an outstanding success. Held at Peckforton Castle, the school sent off its year 13s off in style.

Out in the wilds

An intrepid group of 30 Year 12 students completed their Duke of Edinburgh Award practice expedition over four days in the remote and beautiful Elan Valley, Mid Wales. The various teams worked together to finish in high spirits after enduring difficult terrain and changeable weather conditions. The high point was a wild camp in glorious surroundings with no facilities available; water had to be collected and sterilised from the nearby stream. The students performed magnificently and are now in the process of planning the route for their assessed expedition in September.

Look up....
We would all like more space in our homes and with houses in the UK getting smaller, space is at a premium. But what if there was an affordable way to create more space in our homes? A simple solution for all those people fed up of living among clutter and one that doesnt require planning permission or any major structural building work. For most, the loft is a dark and dingy place visited seasonally; once to dig out the Christmas decorations and then again to bring down the holiday suitcases. A precarious scramble across dusty beams, torch in hand; grabbing whats needed then clambering back past boxes filled with long-forgotten belongings. But that dark and dingy place is worth thousands. In fact, it takes up a third of the floor space in an average home. So shouldnt you be making the most of it? And thats where More Than Loft Ladders (MTLL) comes in. Founded in Bolton over five years ago, MTLL specialises in generating space by making the loft easily accessible. And thats all it does. Its not a generic building company, and its not jack-of-all-trades. MTLL only installs loft hatches, ladders, boarding, lighting and insulation. Its what the company does all day, every day, using qualified local installers who are reliable, tidy and efficient. The latest MTLL franchisee to open covers Crewe and Chester and is run by skilled tradesman, Adam Shepherd...Our average job is about

and use all the space in your home

Install a loft ladder and make more use of your loft!

Heres a great way to make more storage space...

290 and only takes a few hours to complete, says Adam. And for that, customers get a modern two section aluminium ladder 50sq ft of boarding and a light to make the space safe and secure. The price customers are quoted is the price they will pay, with no additional call out or credit card charges. More Than Loft Ladders is already a trusted name in the north west with over 2,500 successful installations, and I really wanted to bring it here to Cheshire...Its such a great and cost effective way for people to gain the extra space they need, added Adam. For a free survey and quotation with no obligation, contact More Than Loft Ladders now!

Peckforton and Beeston WI

The speaker for the August meeting was Christina Spencer whose talk was entitled Living with 60 million foreigners. She spoke in a light hearted way about her experiences as a young girl from Germany who came to Liverpool University to study and there she met her husband. She noted several double meanings in our English language and spoke of many ambiguous words and phrases in her work as a translator. Finally she congratulated England for giving the world a universal language thus providing us with a good reason not to learn any other languages!!. Our next meeting will be at 7.30 p.m. at Peckforton Village Hall on 5th September when we shall learn about life on the wagon trains out west in America, and we would welcome any visitors joining us. 86 To advertise call 01244 350398 Did you spot him?
