Employers
Through various profile-building activities ACCA Canada has raised the awareness of the ACCA designation with many significant Canadian employers in order to assist members and students in finding employment with these organizations in Canada. Listed below are the Approved and Other Employers actively looking to recruit ACCA members and also other organizations interested in ACCA trained accountants and in some cases affiliates and students for internship or summer training type positions. Approved Employers These organizations have been approved by ACCA to cover members Continuing Professional Development (CPD) requirements through their learning and development systems. Members can complete their ACCA Realise requirements automatically as employees of these organizations in Canada. Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce (CIBC) is one of the major Canadian banks and an Approved Employer with ACCA. CIBC posts many of its accounting and finance or senior financial management positions as open to ACCAs: www.cibc.com. Ernst & Young LLP is a Big Four accounting firm who have posted jobs in the national press including ACCA as one of the designations that they are looking for from candidates. The firm has recently obtained its Approved Employer status in support of the Continuing Professional Development of ACCA members for all its Canadian operations: www.ey.com. Hewlett-Packard (HP) is a technology solutions provider to consumers, businesses and institutions globally. They entered the top report in the Ceres-ACCA North American Awards for Sustainability Reporting and have global accreditation as an Approved Employer with ACCA for the training and development they provide their staff: www.hp.com Nortel Networks is a recognized leader in delivering communications capabilities that make the promise of Business Made Simple a reality for customers. Their next-generation technologies, for both service provider and enterprise networks, support multimedia and business-critical applications. Nortel's technologies are designed to help eliminate barriers to efficiency, speed and performance by simplifying networks and connecting people to the information they need, when they need it. Nortel does business in more than 150 countries around the world and is headquartered in Canada. Nortel became globally approved with ACCA in 2007. www.nortel.com OMERS (Ontario Municipal Employees Retirement System) is a leading public sector employees pension fund with extensive operations and ownership of other enterprises in Ontario, Canada and globally. They became an Approved Employer for CPD with ACCA in September 2007 and their Vice President of Internal Audit is an ACCA member. www.omers.com The Bank of Montreal (BMO Financial Group) is a major Canadian Bank. An ACCA member met with human resource and finance staff at the bank and explained the designation. There was broad notification to finance and hiring managers that they can consider ACCAs for finance and accounting positions as they would candidates with Canadian designations and ACCA is prominent in their job postings for finance personnel. They became an approved employer in March 2007. There has also been an interest from their HR areas in including ACCAs in the student summer internship programme operated by the bank. www.bmo.com. UBS Global is a premier global financial services firm offering wealth management, investment banking, asset management and business banking services to clients. UBS is globally approved with ACCA and actively looking at recruitment opportunities with members in Canada. Other global Approved Employers for CPD purposes with significant operations in Canada include:

American Express General Electric HSBC (www.hsbc.ca; jobs@hsbc.ca), IBM Worldwide Accounting Kerry Group PLC Merrill Lynch / Black Rock Investments Microsoft Philips The Proctor & Gamble Company Reuters Shell Standard Life Unilever There are also a number of firms in the process of applying for approval and who may be expected to receive approval shortly. If you are employed by one of these firms then you might expect your CPD will be covered under their learning and development systems in due course and announcements should be made within the firm at that juncture. KPMG LLP is another of the Big Four Accounting firms with offices across Canada. Many ACCA members are employed in senior roles with the various offices and they actively look to recruit ACCA members who meet their particular career profiles: www.kpmg.ca. KPMG has also recently become an Approved Employer with ACCA. PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC) LLP is one of the Big Four accounting firms. They have sponsored the Ceres-ACCA North American Awards for Sustainability Reporting and are currently looking to become an Approved Employer with ACCA in Canada. They employ many ACCAs including some in very senior positions in their Canadian offices. www.ca.pwc.com. Schwartz Levitsky Feldman LLP (a member of HLB International Network) The tenth largest firm in Canada with offices in Toronto, Montreal and Ottawa, the firm has applied for Approved Employer status to cover the ACCAs already working there and the firm currently is looking for 2-4 partner-stream accountants who are mandarin or perhaps Cantonese speaking, with proven experience in public accounting, for their expanding Chinese client base. Although a Canadian CA training firm, SLF is willing to take ACCAs that meet these criteria. Interested and qualified members should submit their resumes to hr@slf.ca. Scotiabank is one of North America's leading financial institutions and Canada's most international bank. There are several ACCA members working with the bank in the Caribbean and that part of the banks operations is approved. The bank is in the process of extending this approval to all its global operations. www.scotiabank.com

Career advice
The Canadian economy is expanding well and has been doing so in spite of contractions in the US economy (its main trading partner) resulting from the 9/11 terrorist attacks and the early millenium collapse of world stock markets. There are1,100 ACCA members and 400 students in Canada presently. Many ACCA members are employed across Canada in public accounting firms such as KPMG, Ernst & Young, Deloitte and PricewaterhouseCoopers as well as in government agencies such as the Canada Customs and Revenue Agency and the Ministry of Finance. Others are employed in various other organizations,HR recruiting and manufacturing companies from various sectors of the Canadian economy. Salaries range from $25,000 to $60,000 p.a. depending on qualification and experience. A salary survey can be found on the Accountemps website. ACCA Canada is engaged in a number of initiatives designed to raise awareness of ACCA with the business community, such as a high profile Centenary event (which was widely reported in all the major media),articles and advertisements in major business magazinesand newspapers, and Sustainability Reporting Awards. Other ACCA members in Canada are also very supportive of new members arriving to Canada so prospects for ACCAs are improving. While the ACCA designation does not yet have statutory recognition in Canada for the practice of public accounting, opportunities exist in various industry sectors, public practice and government agencies . Members will need to demonstrate their skills and training to Canadian employers and recruiters, and be prepared to promote awareness of the quality of the ACCA designation. If members and students do not update their details, they will not receive Canadian newsletters and information about events in Canada. Prepare their resume (CV) in the Canadian format (the ACCA Canada office can provide examples of this). Be prepared to take any reasonable job offered to get some initial experience in the Canadian workplace. Consider taking a part-time job or contract work untilestablished in Canada. Enquire about government/private non-profit groups which offer guidance and voluntary work placements (several of these are listed under Useful Websites on the ACCA Canada website).
