Description:
CYCOM 5215 is a modified epoxy resin prepreg system designed specifically for low temperature, vacuum-bag-only curing. Initial 150F 14-hour cure on the tool is followed by a freestanding post-cure at 350F. After the post-cure, the laminates deliver mechanical properties equivalent to standard 350F, 85 psi cured epoxy. The system will also vacuum bag cure at 250F with no post cure. This material is designed for repair, tooling, prototyping, and structural applications.

CYCOM 5215 prepregs are available in standard material forms using glass and carbon reinforcements. Custom tape and fabrics are also available in glass, aramid, or carbon reinforcements using customer specified weave styles and/or areal weights. This data shows the properties of CYCOM 5215 when cured at 260F without a postcure. After 2 hours at 260F, 5215 exhibits good mechanical performance up to 230F dry. The values of 90/0 compression and OHC compression will meet most 180F (wet) application requirements. Debulk cycles should be 10 to 20 minutes under vacuum with silicone edge dams or other suitable material used to avoid pinch-off of the laminate edge. As with the final vacuum bag procedure, care must be taken during any debulking cycle to avoid pinch-off of the laminate edges due to bridging of the bagging materials at the step down from the laminate to the tool face. Pinchoff will prevent air removal during final cure. For flat or mildly contoured parts, the debulking
Frequent vacuum debulking of a layup is not necessary to produce void free laminates. Frequent debulking of the layup can lead to pinch-off of the laminate edges preventing air removal during the final bagging of the layup for cure. For this reason, vacuum debulking should be performed only as necessary to eliminate wrinkles and bridging of materials in highly contoured or very thick parts. When part contour does make debulking necessary, the complexity of each part requires that an appropriate debulking schedule be established for the unique characteristics of the assembly. Debulk cycles may be needed for each ply of the layup in very complex parts but may only be required each 4th or 5th ply in mildly contoured parts.

4. Post cure the part freestanding in an oven, increase the temperature at a maximum rate of 3F (1.6C)/minute to 350F (177C). Cure at 350F (177C) for 2 hours. Decrease temperature at 5F (2.8C)/minute until below 160F (55C).
For situations where a fast cure is desirable and a higher cure temperature can be utilized without degradation of tooling materials, CYCOM 5215 can be fully cured in 2 hours at 260F without a postcure. 1. Under vacuum (absolute pressure < 2 inch Hg), increase temperature at 3- 5F (1.6 2.8C)/minute to a minimum of 260F (166C) and maximum of 350F. Cure under vacuum (absolute pressure < 2 inch Hg) at 2655F (66C) for a minimum of 120 minutes. Decrease temperature at 5F (2.8C)/minute until below 160F.
