Conclusion

Was the hypothesis true or false? Why or why not? My hypothesis (If an acid comes in contact with a base, the two compounds will be neutralized because each compound dissociates (or break up) into ions that chemically combine to form salt and water.) was partially true and partially false. It was partially false because in some cases neutralization happened. But in most test tubes there was no neutralization. Describe what was happening during each chemical reaction. In each chemical reaction the indicator (phenolphthalein) goes back and forth from being acidic to being a base. For example when we poured Test Tube 1 into Test Tube 2 it became a base, and the phenolphthalein turned into a reddish purplish color (like grape juice). However when we poured the solution in Test Tube 2 into test tube 3 the solution became acidic because the Sulfuric Acid is so strong it overcame the Sodium Hydroxide (NaOH). So the solution is acidic. Was each acid or base completely neutralized when one test tube was poured into the next test tube (starting with Test Tube 3)? Explain your reasoning. No the acids and bases were not completely neutralized. The only test tube that was completely neutral was in Test Tube 1 when we poured 2 drops of phenolphthalein into 2mL of water. This was neutral because water is neutral, so when we put the phenolphthalein it remained neutral. But in the other Test Tubes the PH level kept going back and forth. Test Tube 2 was a base. Test Tube 3 was an acid. However Test Tube 4 remained almost at the same place as Test Tube 3. Test Tube 5 was a base. And Test Tube 6 was a base like Test Tube 5. Why did the last test tube look like Pepto Bismol? The last test tube looked like Pepto Bismol because in the previous test tube when we put the Barium Nitrate into the solution the mixture became a whitish color. But in the last test tube when we put 2 drops of Sodium Hydroxide (6M) into the mixture the substance turned into a fusion color. This happened because the indicator, phenolphthalein turns red in a base situation. And since there was already white, the result ended up in a pink color.

Write one example of a chemical reaction from this lab? One example of a chemical reaction is in test tube 5. The equation was Ba(No3)2+H2SO4= BaSO4. The result of this equation turned out to be that it precipitated in the test tube. Also both reactants could turn into salt or BaSO4. And thats exactly what happened. What are the applications of this lab and acids and bases in the real world?

Well you use many acids and bases without even knowing that we are. For example we used a base called NaHCO3 ( also known as Baking Soda.) We use baking soda to cook food and settle an upset stomach.
