the market research firm International Data Corp., the preliminary findings provide a useful snapshot of an industry on the rise. Approximately 30,000 workers are employed by electronics recycling firms, although the survey found most firms had fewer than 50 employees each. Computer equipment made up 60 percent of the e-scrap handled by the 174 surveyed firms. A more thorough analysis of the data, as well as projections and trends covering the entire e-scrap industry will be presented at the E-Scrap Conference, held this year in Orlando, Florida, October 5-6. The CTIA Wireless Association, a trade group representing the mobile communications industry, has launched a new website that provides tips on how consumers can be more environmentally responsible, including how they can recycle their old electronics.

Graduate students interested in electronics recycling and the Solving the E-Waste Problem (StEP) initiative have a new opportunity to participate. The United Nations University Institute for Sustainability and Peace (UNU-ISP) has announced a call for applications for the 2011 session of StEP E-waste Summer School.
