The following chart looks at whether each states document requirements for a drivers license can be satisfied with a grant of deferred action, documents obtainable through a grant of deferred action, and other documents that DACA beneficiaries are likely to have. The information was gathered from the individual states website. Statutes or other information was not consulted. Please be mindful that websites can be outdated or mistaken, and to follow up with individual states departments. Criterion that must be proven in order to receive drivers license (Acceptable documents to prove each criterion from states website)
Does not include requirements such as application, application fees, insurance, permits, driving tests, etc., that would not be impacted by immigration status.
In parentheses below the criteria are documents that are acceptable as proof for each criterion. Documents included are those that can be obtained through a grant of deferred action (e.g. Employment Authorization Document, Social Security Card) as well as documents that DACA beneficiaries are likely to have (e.g. school ID, transcripts, birth certificates). In some states, the applicant must be able to provide two or more documents from a designated list of documents to establish specific criteria, such as identity.
