Developed as part of The Ascent of Americas High-Growth Companies, a Kauffman Foundation report series that analyzes geographic trends of Inc. 500 companies from 19822010, these profiles reveal state-specific trends in growth or decline of Inc. firms over three decades. The profiles also compare Inc. companies presence in each states Metropolitan Statistical Areas and industrial sectors.

Inc. 500 Firms by Population
Arkansass population has grown by 24.2 percent since 1990, but its number of Inc. 500 companies has fluctuated in that time.
CALIFORNIA
Inc. 500 Firms by Population
California, the most populous state, consistently has the highest number of Inc. 500 companies. Although the population grew by roughly 25 percent from 1990 to 2010, the number of Inc. 500 companies was lower in the 2000s compared to earlier decades.

Inc. 500 Firms by Population
Delawares Inc. firms increased 92.8 percent from the 1980s to 1990s, substantially faster than its population growth of 16.4 percent. However, its Inc. firms declined in the 2000s when the states population growth rate was similar (15 percent).
FLORIDA
Inc. 500 Firms by Population
Floridas population has grown by approximately 45 percent since 1990, and its number of Inc. 500 companies has increased by 11 percent from 19821990 to 20012010. The increase in Inc. companies has not been uniform since the 1980s.

Georgias population has grown by 49.5 percent since 1990, and its number of Inc. 500 firms has increased by 65 percent from 19821990 to 20012010.

Illinoiss population grew 8.6 percent from 1990 to 2000, and during that time, its number of Inc. 500 companies increased by 19.4 percent. From 20002010 the states population grew at 3 percent, and its number of Inc.500 companies decreased by 4.4 percent from the 1990s to the 2000s.

Indianas population has grown by 17 percent since 1990, and its number of Inc. 500 firms is almost the same in the 2000s as it was in the 1980s, although there was a drop in the 1990s.
IOWA

Iowas population has grown by 9.7 percent since 1990, and its number of Inc. 500 companies has increased from the 1990s to the 2000s but is still down from its number of 19821990 Inc. firms.
KANSAS

Kansass population has grown by 15 percent since 1990, but it had less than half as many Inc. 500 companies in the 2000s as it did in the 1990s.
KENTUCKY

Kentuckys population has grown by 17.6 percent since 1990. The states number of Inc. 500 companies in 2001 2010 is up 16.7 percent from the number it had in the 1980s, but it is down 32.7 percent from how many Inc. companies Kentucky had in the 1990s.
LOUISIANA

Louisianas population has grown by 7.3 percent since 1990, but its number of Inc. 500 firms has declined by 39 percent. The state experienced a larger drop in Inc. firms between 1991-2000 and 20012010 than it did from the 1980s to the 1990s.

Maines number of Inc. firms increased 83.3 percent from 19821990 to 20012010, although it is down from the number of Inc. firms in the 1990s.
MARYLAND
Inc. 500 Firms by Population
Marylands population has grown by 20.7 percent since 1990, and its number of Inc. firms has increased by a similar 18.2 percent from 1982 1990 to 20012010.
MASSACHUSETTS

Massachusettss population has grown by 8.8 percent since 1990, and its number of Inc. companies increased by 20.8 percent from 19821990 to 19912000. From 19821990 to 20012010, however, Massachusettss number of Inc. 500 companies has decreased by 1.8 percent.
MICHIGAN

Michigans population has grown by 6.2 percent since 1990, but its number of Inc. firms has declined by 26.7 percent from 19821990 to 20012010. Michigan also experienced a population decrease of 0.6 percent from 2000 to 2010.
MINNESOTA

Minnesotas population increased by 12.3 percent from 1990 to 2000 while its number of Inc. firms increased by 78 percent from 19821990 to 19912000. From 2000 to 2010, the states population growth increased to 17.2 percent but it experienced an 8 percent decrease in Inc. firms from 19912000 to 20012010.
MISSISSIPPI
Inc. 500 Firms by Population
Mississippis number of Inc. firms has almost tripled from 1982 1990 to 20012010; however, the states population has only increased by 15 percent since 1990.
MISSOURI

Missouris population increased by approximately 17 percent from 1990 to 2010, while the number of Inc. 500 companies in the state was actually lower in the 2000s than in previous decades.
MONTANA
Inc. 500 Firms by Population
Montanas population increased by a similar amount from 1990 to 2000 as it did from 2000 to 2010. The states number of Inc. firms in 20012010 was 2.5 times its number of Inc. firms from the 1990s.
NEBRASKA
Inc. 500 Firms by Population
Nebraskas population has grown by 15.8 percent since 1990, but its number of Inc. companies decreased from twenty-five in 19821990 to twenty-three in 20012010. The state had a drop in its number of Inc. firms in the 1990s.
NEVADA

Nevadas population grew by 66.6 percent from 1990 to 2000 and grew by 35 percent from 2000 to 2010. The states number of Inc. firms grew by 260 percent from the 1980s to the 1990s and by 83.3 percent from the 1990s to the 2000s.
NEW HAMPSHIRE

New Hampshires population has grown by 18.9 percent since 1990, but the state has only 60 percent as many Inc. firms in 20012010 as it had in 19821990.
NEW JERSEY
Inc. 500 Firms by Population
New Jerseys population has grown by 13 percent since 1990 but its number of Inc. 500 firms has stayed fairly constant from the 1980s to the 2000s (increasing only 2.3 percent). The state did have a larger increase in Inc. firms in the 1990s.
NEW MEXICO
Inc. 500 Firms by Population
New Mexicos population has grown by 35.5 percent since 1990, but its number of Inc. 500 companies has varied across the decades. From the 1980s to the 1990s, New Mexico experienced a 29 percent increase in its number of Inc. firms, but from the 1990s to the 2000s, New Mexicos number of Inc. firms decreased by 64.5 percent.

New Yorks population has grown by 7.7 percent since 1990, but its number of Inc. 500 firms grew by 15.8 percent from the 1980s to the 2000s. The states number of Inc. firms decreased in the 1990s.
NORTH CAROLINA

North Carolinas population has increased by approximately 44 percent since 1990, but its number of Inc. 500 companies has decreased by 15.7 percent from 19821990 to 20012010. Most of the decrease in the number of Inc. firms occurred in the period between 2001 and 2010.

Ohios population has grown by 6.3 percent since 1990, and its number of Inc. firms has decreased by 28.8 percent in the 2000s from how many it had in the 1980s.
OKLAHOMA

Oklahomas population grew by about 0.3 million people from 1990 to 2000 and again from 2000 to 2010. Although the states number of Inc. firms is up 40 percent in the most recent decade from the 1980s, the number of Inc. firms increased by 70 percent from the 1980s to the 1990s and then decreased by 17.6 percent from the 1990s to the 2000s.
OREGON

Oregons population has grown by approximately 35 percent since 1990, but its number of Inc. firms has almost doubled from the 1980s to the 2000s (a 97 percent increase).
PENNSYLVANIA
Inc. 500 Firms by Population
Pennsylvanias population grew by approximately 34 percent from 1990 to 2000 and again by 34 percent from 2000 to 2010. The states number of Inc. firms, however, decreased by 14 percent from the 1980s to the 1990s and then stayed fairly constant from the 1990s to the 2000s (an increase of 1.8 percent).
RHODE ISLAND

Rhode Islands population grew by 5 percent from 1990 to 2000 and stayed constant from 2000 to 2010. The states number of Inc. firms has declined by 39 percent from 19821990 to 20012010.
SOUTH CAROLINA
Inc. 500 Firms by Population
South Carolinas population has grown by 32.7 percent since 1990, but its number of Inc. firms has remained fairly stable from the 1990s to the 2000s (a 6 percent increase) with a drop in the 1990s.
TENNESSEE
Inc. 500 Firms by Population
Tennessees population has grown by approximately 30 percent since 1990, and its number of Inc. firms has increased by 20.3 percent. The states number of Inc. firms decreased from the 1980s to the 1990s, while the population growth rate was 16.6 percent, and increased from the 1990s to the 2000s when Tennessees population grew by 11.6 percent.
TEXAS
Inc. 500 Firms by Population
Texass population has grown by 48 percent since 1990. Its number of Inc. 500 firms grew by 31 percent from the 1980s to the 1990s and remained almost the exact same from the 1990s to the 2000s.
UTAH
Inc. 500 Firms by Population
Utahs population has increased by 95 percent since 1990, and its number of Inc. 500 firms has increased by more than 300 percent from the 1980s to the 2000s. Growth in population and number of Inc. firms was higher from the 1980s to the 1990s than it was from the 1990s to the 2000s.
VERMONT
Inc. 500 Firms by Population
Vermonts population has grown by 12.5 percent since 1990, and it had a similar number of Inc. firms in 1990s as it had in the 1980s. The number of Inc. firms in the state decreased in 20012010 to just 22 percent as many companies as it had from 19821990.
VIRGINIA

Virginias population has grown by 29 percent since 1990, but its number of Inc. firms has increased by more than its population growth rate (40.6 percent) from the 1980s to the 2000s.
WASHINGTON
Inc. 500 Firms by Population
Washingtons population has grown by approximately 38 percent since 1990, but its number of Inc. firms from the 1980s to the 2000s has grown at a higher rate (62.3 percent) than that of the population.
WEST VIRGINIA
Inc. 500 Firms by Population
West Virginias population has grown by 3.3 percent since 1990, and its number of Inc. firms has increased from five in the 1980s to eight in the 2000s.
WISCONSIN

Wisconsins population has grown by 16 percent since 1990, but its number of Inc. firms decreased by 33.7 percent from the 1980s to the 2000s. Most of this decrease occurred from 20012010, while the states number of Inc. firms actually rose from 19912000.
WYOMING

Wyomings population has grown by 24.4 percent since 1990, but its number of Inc. 500 firms has decreased across the decades so that the state had only one-third as many Inc. firms in the 2000s as it had in the 1980s.
