Removal of Corrosion Product from Corrosion Test Specimens Objective:

To remove corrosion product from zinc galvanized steel plates after NSS test in accordance with ISO 8407

Reagents Preparation:
1. For removal of corrosion product from iron and steel (Choose one of the followings)
1. Mix 500 ml of hydrochloric acid with 5 g of hexamethylenetetramine, use distilled water to make 1000 ml 2. 3. Mix 1000 ml of hydrochloric acid with 20 g of antimony trioxide and 50 g of tin(II) chloride Mix 500 ml of hydrochloric acid with 5g of 1,3-di-n-butyl-2-thiourea, use distilled water to make 1000 ml

2. For removal of corrosion product from zinc and zinc alloys (Choose one of the followings)
1. 2. 3. 4. Prepare 250 g of glycine, use distilled water to make 1000 ml Prepare 100 g of ammonium chloride, use distilled water to make 1000 ml Prepare 200 g of chromium trioxide. use distilled water to make 1000 ml Prepare 100 g of ammonium acetate, use distilled water to make 1000 ml

Procedures:
A. Removal of iron and steel corrosion product 1. Brush a corroded specimen with a soft bristle brush under running water. 2. Immerse the specimen in the reagent prepared for removal of corrosion product from iron and steel. 3. Maintain the specimen vertical throughout the process. 4. Perform the cleaning process under the following conditions.
Reagent 1.1 1.2 Total Time 10 min 1 min to 25 min 1.3 1 min to 5 min 20 C to 25 C Temperature 20 C to 25 C 20 C to 25 C Solution should be vigorously stirred or specimen should be brushed. Solution should be vigorously stirred or specimen should be brushed. Remarks

5. Use a low-power microscope to examine surface of the specimen. 6. Repeat the cleaning process with a control specimen.

7. Repeat the cleaning process several times after the removal of the corrosion products is completed. 8. Plot a graph of the mass as a function of the number of equal cleaning cycles. 9. Rinse and light brush the specimen with tap water. 10. Rinse the specimen with distilled or deionized water. B. Removal of zinc and zinc alloys corrosion product 11. Repeat Step 2 10 except Step 4. 12. Perform the cleaning process under the following conditions.
Reagent 2.1 Total Time 1 min to 10 min 2.2 2 min to 5 min 2.3 1 min 80 C For chloride-contaminated specimens,10 g of silver nitrate (AgNO3) per 1000 ml solution should be added 2.4 2 min to 5 min 70 C 70 C Temperature 20 C to 25 C Remarks

13. Rinse the specimen with ethanol. 14. Dry the specimen with a hot air blower or an oven. 15. Dry the specimen in a desiccators 16. Record the weight.

Precautions for safe handling:

(Please refer to the MSDS of each chemical for details) 1. Hydrochloric acid solution
Avoid contact with skin and eyes. Avoid inhalation of vapour or mist. Normal measures for preventive fire protection.

2. Hexamethylenetetramine
Avoid formation of dust and aerosols. Provide appropriate exhaust ventilation at places where dust is formed. Keep away from sources of ignition No smoking. Take measures to prevent the build up of electrostatic charge.

3. Antimony(III) oxide
Avoid formation of dust and aerosols. Provide appropriate exhaust ventilation at places where dust is formed. Normal measures for preventive fire protection.

4. Glycine
Provide appropriate exhaust ventilation at places where dust is formed. Normal measures for preventive fire protection.

5. Ammonium chloride
Avoid contact with skin and eyes. Avoid formation of dust and aerosols. Provide appropriate exhaust ventilation at places where dust is formed.

6. Chromium(III) oxide
Avoid contact with skin and eyes. Avoid formation of dust and aerosols. Provide appropriate exhaust ventilation at places where dust is formed. Normal measures for preventive fire protection.

7. Silver nitrate
Avoid formation of dust and aerosols. Provide appropriate exhaust ventilation at places where dust is formed. Keep away from sources of ignition - No smoking. Keep away from combustible material.
