SOME HERO HONDA HIGHLIGHTS


The board of directors of Hero Honda has approved the splitting of equity shares to five equity shares of Rs 2 each from the present one equity share of Rs 10 each. It commenced production of engine components in Jan.'87 to reduce manufacturing cost. In 1990-91, Hero Honda promoted a company - Hero Honda Finalize - to provide lease finance to its customers. In 1993-94, the company launched a new model Splendor. Hero Honda's main characteristics are its four-stroke engine technology; fuel efficiency and low exhaust pollution levels. It exports to around 31 countries including Srilanka, Africa, west Asia, Bermuda, Zaire, and Paraguay. The company also introduced Street, 4-stroke step through motorcycle in the year 1998.During 1999-2000, it launched its most powerful and fast bike CBZ, powered by a 156 cc engine. The company is also investing Rs 300 crs to roll out a new motorcycle model every year till 2002 in collaboration with Honda. The new models are expected to be in the range of 100cc and 156cc engine capacity segment. It has also increased its installed capacity of motorized two wheelers by 3, 00,000 No during the year under review. It has also participated in India Tech Expo in Nigeria. The response shown to the products was very encouraging in the fair and the company expects to clock a higher export sale during the current financial year. Hero Honda has launched a new 100-cc motorcycle named Passion in the first month of 2001 in six colors.

The company said that the new two-wheeler will incorporate enhanced functionality combined with strengths of riding comfort and fuel efficiency. Both the growth rate and profit margin will be under pressure in future. With the four-stroke segment being fragmented between various contenders, Hero Honda's domination will get diluted over a period of time. Meanwhile, in January 2006, Hero Honda registered a 7.3% rise in motorcycle sales to 195,000 units. But compared to the December 2005 sales figure of 125,000 units, the growth rate of 16% is redeeming. In the April 2005-January 2006 period (10 months), sales rose by 22.7% to 1.42 million units from 1.16 million in the year-ago period. Even as the motorcycle sales figure for January 2006 is being termed modest, players are disappointed that the company's own target of 173,000 units for the month has been missed. Hero Honda has set out a full year (FY 2004-05) target of 1.8 million vehicles. It will have to sell over 186,000 vehicles over the next two months to achieve that target. On 31 January 2006, the Hero Honda scrip was included in the derivatives segment of the BSE as well as NSE. The inclusion in the derivatives list is expected to generate more interest in the stock. Earlier, on 10 January 2006, Hero Honda unveiled its third quarter (ended 31 December 2005) results. It registered a 14.7% rise in net profit to Rs 152.8 crore (Rs 1.52 billion), compared to Rs 133.22 crore (Rs 1.33 billion) in the corresponding period of the previous year. Net sales increased by 12.8% to Rs 1,376.04 crore (Rs 13.76 billion) from Rs 1,219.47 crore (Rs 12.19 billion). Both net profit and sales were in line with market expectations.
