Airplanes

Materials: Worsted Weight Yarn 2 oz main colour A, 2 oz contrasting colour B, small amt of C Crochet Hook Size G or 4.50 mm Cardboard Wood Glue Balsa wood dowels Chenille yarn for propeller Stuffing Finished Size Approximately 9"

Monoplane:
Body: Using A, ch 21. Base Row: 2 sc in 2nd ch from hook, 1 sc in each of next 4 sc, * 2 sc in next sc, 1 sc in each of next 4 sc, rep from * to end. Turn. Rows 1 to 5: Ch 1, 1 sc in each sc to end. Turn. Row 6: Ch 1, work next 2 sc tog, 1 sc in each sc to last 2 sc, work last 2 sc tog. Turn. Row 7 to 9: Ch 1, 1 sc in each sc to end. Turn. Rep last 4 rows 6 more times. 10 sc. Next Row: Ch 1, 1 sc in each sc to end. Turn. Next Row: Ch 1, * work next 2 sc tog, rep from * once more, 1 sc in each of next 6 sc.Turn. 8 sc. Next Row: Ch 1, 1 sc in each sc to end. Turn. Next Row: Ch 1, work next 2 sc tog, 1 sc in next sc, work next 2 sc tog, 1 sc in each of next 3 sc. Fasten off. Circle at Front of Plane: Using A, ch 4, sl st in first ch to form a ring. Rnd 1: Ch 1, work 7 sc in ring, sl st in first sc. Rnd 2: Ch 1, 1 sc in sl st, * 2 sc in next sc, 1 sc in next sc, rep from * twice more, 2 sc in last sc, sl st in first sc. 12 sc. Rnd 3: As 2nd round. 18 sc. Fasten off.

Wing: Using B, ch 45. Base Row: 1 sc in 2nd ch from hook, 1 sc in each ch to end. Turn. Row 1: Ch 1, 1 sc in each sc to end. Turn. Row 2: Ch 1, 2 sc in next sc, 1 sc in each sc to last sc, 2 sc in last sc. Turn. 46 sc. Row 3 & 4: As first row. Row 5: As 2nd row. 48 sc. Rows 6 - 9: As first row. Fasten off. Make another piece in the same way. Tail: Using B, ch 11. Base Row: 1 sc in 2nd ch from hook, 1 sc in each ch to end. Turn. Row 1: Ch 1, 2 sc in next sc, 1 sc in each sc to last sc, 2 sc in last sc. Turn. Row 2 & 3: Ch 1, 1 sc in each sc to end. Turn. 12 sc. Row 4: Ch 1, 2 sc in next sc, 1 sc in each of next 5 sc. Turn. Row 5: Ch 1, work next 2 sc tog, 1 sc in each of next 5 sc. Turn. Row 6: Ch 1, 1 sc in each sc to last 2 sc, work last 2 sc tog. Fasten off. Rejoin yarn to center of rem 6 sc and work 1 sc in each sc to end. Turn. Work 4th and 6th rows once more. Fasten off. Make another piece in the same way. Rudder: Using B, ch 6. Base Row: Ch 1, 1 sc in each sc to end. Turn. Row 1: Ch 1, 1 sc in each of next 4 sc. 2 sc in last sc. Turn. Row 2 to 4: Ch 1, 1 sc in each sc to end. Turn. Row 5: Ch 1, 2 sc in next sc, 1 sc in each sc to end. Turn. Row 6: Ch 1, work next 2 sc tog, 1 sc in each of next 3 sc, work next 2 sc tog. Turn. Row 7: Ch 1, work next 2 sc tog, 1 sc in next sc, work next 2 sc tog. Fasten off. Make another piece in the same way.

Wheels: (make 2): Using C, ch 4, sl st in first ch to form a ring. Rnd 1: Ch 1, work 7 sc in ring, sl st in first sc.

Rnd 2: Ch 1, 1 sc in sl st, * 2 sc in next sc, 1 sc in next sc, rep from * to last sc, 2 sc in last sc, sl st in first sc. 12 sc. Rnd 3: As 2nd round. 18 sc. Fasten off. Make another piece in the same way. To Finish: Using wing, tail, rudder and wheel as patterns, cut cardboard to match shapes. Join long seam of body section, stuff firmly, then sew circle in place. Join wing, tail, rudder and wheel sections tog over cardboard. Cut cardboard propeller and wrap it with chenille, glueing while wrapping. Sew to body. Attach wing to body, use balsa wood painted black to form struts and undercarriage. Glue wheels to undercarriage. Sew rudder to tail, sew tail to body.

Biplane:
Work as for monoplane, but make 2 wings and join wings together with balsa wood and glue as pictured.

Triplane:
Work as for monoplane, but make 3 wings and join them together with balsa wood and glue as pictured.
