Welcome to the Faculty of Medicine and Health

Sciences.
Congratulations on making the decision to embark
your
personal and career development by joining the
Bachelor of Nursing Programme with Honours,
UNIMAS. Nursing education is transformative. It
encourages aspiration, it instills confidence and
self worth, it open the mind, and it offers new
perspectives to you.
You have the opportunity to explore new

knowledge in both theory and practice. The
educational approach in this faculty is very much
student centered as the trust of learning has
become not so much to absorb facts and
information but to develop the necessary skills to
find new knowledge. You are challenged to acquire
positive attitude, knowledge and skills and apply
these to be a competent professional nurse.
During the course of your study you will have the opportunity to be placed
at hospitals, health centers, organisations and villages. These placements
are meant to expose you to various health care settings and support
systems. You will learn to identify the factors that influence health and
the needs of the population both in the rural as well as in the urban
areas.
In addition to the core courses, you need to take the generic and elective
courses. These courses are meant to widen your horizon so that you will
be able to present yourself professionally.
In this handbook, there is a list of names of key-faculty personnel who will

be able to assist you, so please do not hesitate to contact them.
I expect the time you spend in this faculty to be dynamic and rewarding. I

1.0 INTRODUCTION TO UNIVERSITI MALAYSIA SARAWAK (UNIMAS)
1.1 UNIMAS Vision
The University‟s vision is to establish itself as an exemplary

university of internationally acknowledged stature and as a
scholarly institution of choice for both students and
academics through the pursuit of excellence in teaching,
research and scholarship.
1.2 UNIMAS Mission
The University‟s mission is to generate, disseminate and apply

knowledge strategically and innovatively to enhance the
quality of the nation‟s culture and prosperity of its people.
1.3 Brief History of UNIMAS
Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (UNIMAS) was officially

incorporated on 24 December 1992. UNIMAS is the eighth
public Malaysian university, established just after the
declaration of Vision 2020. The challenges outlined to achieve
this Vision have given UNIMAS the unique opportunity not
simply to respond to change but to become a significant agent
and intellectual catalyst of change nationally.
The University took in its pioneer students numbering 118 in

1993 with the opening of the Faculty of Social Sciences and
Faculty of Resource Science and Technology. In 1994, the
University moved to its temporary campus in Kota
Samarahan. The University‟s temporary campus at Kota
Samarahan was officially launched by the ex-Prime Minister,
YAB Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad on Merdeka Day, 31 August
1993.
Over the years, the University has developed rapidly with the
establishment of eight faculties, three institutes and six
centers. UNIMAS is a university committed to being
contemporary in character and forward looking in outlook in
developing its education system. Since its inception in 1992,
UNIMAS has been dedicated to educating students who are
not only highly knowledgeable and skilled in their respective
fields, but also individuals who are well-rounded, practical as
well as rich in culture and positive values. Efforts for
enhancing the quality of teaching-learning were intensified,
supported and strengthened with efforts to improve the
quality of the management processes related to teaching and
learning.
Quality is the basis of all products and processes at UNIMAS.

Quality-assurance processes ensure efficient course delivery
and student learning. UNIMAS was awarded ISO quality
certificate by SIRIM as recognition of the high quality in the
management of academic activities from the intake of new
students to the award of degrees to graduates.
The University is placing great emphasis on the development

of ICT and has successful integrated ICT in all aspects of
teaching and learning as well as administration.
2.0 FACULTY’S MISSION AND EDUCATIONAL PHILOSOPHY
2.1 Mission
The Faculty‟s mission is to establish itself as an exemplary

educational centre and as institution of choice for students
and the community and capable of achieving the challenges of
change.
2.2 Educational Philosophy
The educational programme emphasis the total development

of highly competent health professionals who will be an
integral part of the community and sensitive to its needs.
They will be imbued with high moral and ethical values as
well as aesthetic sensibility. These will be achieved through
an innovative, broad-based, student-centred and problem-
based educational programme that is community and practice
oriented, and achieving a balance between the science and the
art of medicine.
3.0 DEPARTMENT OF NURSING
3.1 INTRODUCTION
3.1.1 VISION
UNIMAS envisages its Nursing Programme to be both

nationally and internationally recognised and the
programme of choice for students and academicians.
3.1.2 MISSION
The UNIMAS Nursing Programme is committed to

provide a wide array of opportunities in education, and
research. It aims to develop and shape nursing, to
remain contemporary, competitive, and forward in
nature.

3.1.3 PHILOSOPHY
The UNIMAS Nursing Programme is committed to excel in

nursing education, research and practice. It views health as
complex and dynamic, and the client as a holistic
individual. Students in this programme learn in an
environment that stimulates intellectual inquiry and
creativity which encourages them to be problem-solvers and
life-long learners.
3.2 The Bachelor of Nursing with Honours Programme
The Bachelor of Nursing with Honours Programme has been designed

to:-
Enable pre-registration nursing students to acquire a sound

knowledge and skills for beginning professional nursing
practice and post-registration students to strengthen and
broaden their knowledge of nursing and its related and
supporting disciplines.
Provide an appropriate educational foundation from which

successful students may proceed to post-graduate studies in
nursing.
In keeping with the educational aim of UNIMAS to provide education

for capability, the nursing program values creativity in developing
human potential and encourages its students to be both critical
thinkers and independent learners. In order to promote the
achievement of these attributes, students are expected to be active
participants in the teaching-learning process through their
involvement in all of the program‟s educational activities, e.g.,
lectures, discussions, seminars, clinical sessions, presentations,
problem-based learning sessions, as well as independent or self-
directed learning.
Underpinning the programme is the faculty‟s commitment to the

concept of holistic health care. As a basis for the application of this
concept to professional nursing practice, a core curriculum has been
evolved which consists of five inter-woven strands namely basic
medical sciences, nursing sciences and clinical nursing, humanities,
social sciences with ICT and entrepreneurial skills incorporated in
all components. The content of the programme also takes into
account the current national and global trends in health care,
changing disease patterns, and recent advances in medical sciences
and technology. In light of these on-going developments, the
programme encourages and supports the importance of continuing
education and life-long learning for its students and its academic
staff.

3.3 Programme Learning Outcome
Master knowledge in nursing sciences.

Use psychomotor skills in delivering quality and contemporary
nursing care.
Work collaboratively with clients, other professional and the
community.
Practice professional standard, develop positive and ethical
attitude and values in nursing practice.
Communicate effectively and demonstrate effective leadership.
Ability to use critical thinking and evidence-based approach in
problem solving and practice.
Ability to manage information effectively and practice lifelong
learning.
Acquire knowledge and skill in management and
entrepreneurship.
3.4 Facilities Available within the Faculty
In order to facilitate teaching and learning, the programme is

supported by various facilities available within the faculty. These
include a clinical skills development laboratory (CSDL), an anatomy
laboratory, a computer assisted learning laboratory (CAL), and an
integrated basic medical sciences laboratory. Selected reference
materials, some in print and some in electronic databases, are
available in the Medical Library as well as in the Centre for Academic
Information Services (CAIS).
4.0 ENTRY REQUIREMENTS FOR PRE-REGISTRATION
4.1 Basic Requirements

All applicants must passed Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM)/Malaysia
Certificate of Education (MCE) or its equivalent recognised by the
University‟s Senate.
In addition, an applicant must obtained at least a credit in Bahasa

Malaysia and a pass in English, and a credit in Mathematics at SPM
or MCE level.

4.2 Specific Academic Requirements
Pre-Registration Applications:-
EITHER
Full Sijil Tinggi Pelajaran Malaysia (STPM) / High School Certificate
(HSC) or equivalent with principal passes of at least B for Biology and
Chemistry and C for Mathematics or Physics.
OR
Matriculation
Applicants in this category must pass with at least a B in Biology and
Chemistry and C for Mathematics or Physics.
OR
Diploma in Science
Applicants with a Diploma in Science from a recognized institution
must obtained at least a CGPA of 3.0 and have demonstrated the
required levels of competence in Bahasa Malaysia and English.
Post-Registration Applications:-
Only applications who posses a Certificate or Diploma in Nursing can
be considered for admission. In addition to a good pass in relevant
examinations, applicants must meet special entry requirements as
specified by UNIMAS from time to time.
5.0 TUITION FEES
All students are required to pay the tuition fees during registration at the
beginning of the semester.

6.0 ACADEMIC MATTERS
6.1 Categories of Courses
6.1.1 Core Courses

The core courses comprise of courses in the basic medical
sciences, nursing sciences and clinical nursing, humanities,
scientific methods and electives with ICT and
entrepreneurial skills incorporated in all components. The
programme‟s design not only takes into account the core
knowledge and clinical skill requirements necessary for safe
professional practice in a variety of Malaysian nursing
environments, but also attempts to incorporate relevant
aspects of international educational practice.
6.1.2 Generic Courses

Generic courses are compulsory for all UNIMAS
undergraduates. Each student must successfully complete a
minimum of 12 credits of generic courses before they are
allowed to graduate (refer to pg 18 for further details).
6.1.3 Elective Courses

Elective courses are offered by the other faculties, which all
undergraduate students must complete in addition to their
core courses. Each student must successfully complete 9
credits of Elective Courses prior to graduation (refer to pg 18
for further details).
6.1.4 Soft Skills Course

Soft skills course is compulsary for students. It aims to
inculcate interpersonal, teamwork and leadership skills and
to ensure graduates are able to function holistically.
6.2 Advanced Credit
Students with Diploma in Nursing are allowed to apply for credit

transfer. It is awarded to students if they can provide evidence that
they have obtained a good pass in relevant subjects from their former
institutions and relevant experience, knowledge and expertise in a
clinical specialty recognised by the University. Students can apply to
the Faculty for advanced credit. Applications will be considered
individually based on the following criteria:-
Have obtained at least an equivalent (and above) of grade B- in the

courses they are applying for advanced credits.
Have the relevant experience, knowledge and expertise which are
recognised by the University as equivalent to the requisite above.
The relevant courses or knowledge, experience and expertise
should have been obtained by students within the last five years.
The total advanced credits awarded to students who are qualified
should not exceed one-third of the total program course credits.

6.3 Attendance
Attendance at all scheduled lectures, problem-based learning (PBL)

sessions, tutorials, laboratory sessions, presentations, practical
classes and clinical sessions (whether in the Clinical Skill
Development Laboratory or in Hospital or Health Care setting) is
COMPULSORY. In the event of an absence due to sickness, a Medical
Certificate must be submitted to the relevant course Coordinator.
Failure to attend scheduled sessions in the absence of a genuine

reason may result in a student being and/or either:-
(a) referred for disciplinary action;

(b) barred from taking the end of semester examination in any
course; and/or
(c) awarded a failing grade in any course.
6.4 Deferment of Studies
6.4.1 Consideration for the Deferment of Registration
A student who is sick for an extended period can apply to the

Dean of the Faculty to defer his/her registration. For all such
cases, an appropriate verification from a registered medical
doctor is required. In special cases where the verification is
not from a registered medical doctor, application for
postponement of registration can only be considered if the
student has initially sought medical treatment. In psychiatric
cases, approval for course re-registration will be subjected to
the recommendation of the doctor involved.
The medical doctors who provide treatment and verification

for students must be from the Ministry of Health, the
University or from the University‟s panel of doctors.
All decisions relating to such applications are made at the

Faculty level.
6.4.2 Consideration for the deferment of sitting for

examination
A student who is sick or faces other serious problems during

the examination period must apply to the Dean of the Faculty
to defer his/her sitting for the examination. However, any
application for a deferment must be made within 48 hours
of the examination.
Any application to defer the sitting of any examinations on

medical grounds must be made with verification from the
registered medical doctor who is treating the student. The
attending doctor must be from the Ministry of Health, the
University or from the University‟s panel of doctors.
6.5 Duration of Studies
6.5.1 The duration for pre-registration programme requires a

minimum of four (4) years of full-time study.
6.5.2 The duration for post-registration programme requires a

minimum of two and half (2½) years of full-time study.
7.0 PLAGIARISM
Plagiarism is generally defined as the deliberate incorporation in an essay or

paper of material drawn from the work of another person without proper
acknowledgement.
All students enrolled in the Bachelor of Nursing Science with Honours

Programme will be issued with a Referencing Guide to assist them to
acknowledge, in an academically appropriate way, all materials drawn from
the work of other people.
The University, the Faculty and the Nursing Department view plagiarism
very seriously. Any student who is found to have plagiarized will be severely
penalized (for example, being barred from sitting for examinations, having
passing grades cancelled, etc.)

8.0 THE MENTOR-MENTEE SYSTEM
8.1 Purpose
The purpose of the Faculty‟s mentor-mentee system is to provide

guidance to students on academic matters and to foster a close and
constructive professional relationship between students and the staff
of the Faculty. While all lecturers in the Faculty are potentially
academic advisors to all students who seek their advice, each lecturer
(mentor) is assigned particular responsibility to a small group of
students (mentees).
8.2 Role of Mentors
In essence, the key roles of mentors are to:-
a) Assist their mentees to gain an understanding of the

curriculum, the faculty‟s expectations of its students and the
University‟s requirements (for example, in respect of its
student registration system);
b) Provide advice and guidance to students regarding academic
matters;
c) Provide feedback and opportunities for reflective review
following the release of End-of-Semester results;
d) Assist students in solving problems and, when necessary,
refer them to an appropriate authority or resource person;
e) Perform any other functions as required by the Faculty.
8.3 Responsibilities of Mentees
All Students are encouraged to meet with their mentors, on a regular

basis, to discuss their learning progress including any academic
problems encountered.
8.4 Implementation of the Mentor-Mentee System
Although each student will be assigned to a mentor, students may

seek advice from other academics with whom they feel comfortable.
Mentors and mentees are expected to meet on a regular basis, for
example, approximately three to four times per year under normal
circumstances. Appointments for meetings between mentor and
mentee are usually arranged for a time and place suitable to both. A
written report of each meeting is prepared and all reports are filed in
the students‟ Faculty files.

9.0 STUDENT PERFORMANCE ASSESSMENT
9.1 Continuous Assessment
Students‟ progress is continuously monitored throughout the

programme and feedback regarding their performance will be
provided on a regular basis. In most courses, specified percentages of
the marks from written assignments, seminar presentations and mid-
semester examination (or periodic formative assessments [PFAs])
contribute to the final marks for the course. This system values and
rewards student‟s learning efforts throughout the semester rather
than concentrating only on the outcome of one final examination. In
addition to the assessment of knowledge, understanding and
psychomotor skills, continuous assessment also takes into account
student‟s attitudes, self discipline, and on-going patterns of learning
behaviour.
9.2 End-of Semester Examinations
In many courses, student‟s performances are assessed both

continuously and by means of a final examination at the end of the
semester.
Your attention is drawn to the importance of checking the

course assessment details for each semester’s courses at the
beginning of each semester. This information is set out in the
course information sheet. The relevant information is given to
students at the beginning of each semester by the course
coordinator.
9.3 Professional Examination
Professional examinations will be conducted at the end of the second

year and final year of the programme. External examiners will be
invited for these examinations.

A credit is a quantitative measurement for all learning activities

required to achieve the learning outcomes. One credit includes 40
hours of learning which include face-to-face and independent
learning.
Students are not allowed to enroll in more than 20 Course Credits
per semester without the approval of the Dean of the Faculty.
11.0 GENERIC AND ELECTIVE COURSES
11.1 Generic Courses
Courses under this category are designed to develop students with

positive attitudes and culturally acceptable behaviour and
personality traits. These courses also encourage the development of a
balance between autonomy and cooperation, assertiveness and
working independently, without direction from higher authorities,
and the willingness to work as a team member in achieving common
objectives.
Generic courses are compulsory for all undergraduates at UNIMAS.

They are also referred to as the “University Core Courses” (Kursus
Teras Universiti), which underscores the fact that they are not trivial
courses. Certain Generic courses will require that the student meet
the minimum level of competency. Those that do not meet with these
pre-requisites are required to take Remedial Courses (Kursus
Pengukuhan). The current minimum number of credits required for
Generic courses is 12 credits.
Transfer of credits may also be considered to a maximum of about a

third of the total course credits for Generic Courses (i.e., up to 4
credits) provided that the student can supply evidence that he/she
has previously attended similar courses with satisfactory results (i.e.,
at least the equivalent of grade B-) from institutions recognised by
UNIMAS.
Grades obtained in Generic courses are considered when calculating

the student‟s CGPA.

category.
11.2 Elective Courses
Elective courses are additional courses, which all UNIMAS students

must take. These courses are aimed at enabling students to acquire
reasonable in-depth knowledge in fields other than that of their
chosen field. Consequently, University Elective courses are more
challenging compared to the Generic courses.
Even though UNIMAS students can choose to take any course that
interests them, students at FMHS are only allowed to choose from
sets of courses that have been endorsed by the faculty. This is
because the programmes at FMHS use a calendar system that is
different from those used by the rest of the university. In addition,
the nature of the training involved in the preparation of FMHS
graduates makes it necessary that these courses are to be taken in
an orderly and timely manner. It is virtually impossible to take these
courses after Year 2, as students will be heavily involved in the
various clinical postings/rotations.
Students must complete a total of 9 credits. Grades obtained in

University Elective courses are considered when calculating the
student‟s CGPA.
Refer to Appendix B for details on the courses offered under this

category. Further details on the sets of endorsed courses will also be
provided during the orientation session at FMHS or on the faculty
notice boards.
11.3 Remedial Courses (“Kursus Pengukuhan”)
Students that do not meet with the minimal requirements for

Generic courses are required to take the following courses:-

The objective of this category of courses is to strengthen/increase the

students‟ level of proficiency/competency. Students will only get a
Pass (L) or Fail (F). These courses are not considered in CGPA
calculations.
Refer to Appendix C for details on the courses offered under this

category.
The criteria for assessing whether a student meets the minimal

requirements for Remedial Courses are as follows:-
i) IT Placement Test (“Ujian Penempatan IT”) (UPIT)
All FMHS students are required to sit for the UPIT.
Those who failed the test must register for TMX 1011 (End User
Computing/Komputan Pengguna), which is offered only in Semester
1 of every academic calendar. Upon scoring a Pass (L), the student
will be exempted from TMX 1010. However, they are still required to
register for TMX 2012 (IT Tools for Knowledge Workers/Alat TM
untuk Pekerja Ilmuan) offered only in Semester 2 of every academic
calendar.
ii) Malaysian University English Test (MUET)
All UNIMAS students who scored Band 1-3 in MUET will have to
register for Preparatory English (Level 1) in Semester 1 of the
2009/2010 academic session.
Upon scoring a Pass (L) in Preparatory English (Level 1), the student
must then register for Preparatory English (Level 2) in Semester 2
Those who scored Band 4-6 in MUET are allowed to skip the
Preparatory English course and register for the English Elective
courses.
Note:
If a student obtains Band 4-6 in another attempt at MUET, after
entering UNIMAS, he/she can apply for an exemption from
Preparatory English Level II, and advance to the English Elective
courses.
All UNIMAS students are required to register and successfully

complete the Preparatory English courses and/or two out of six
Elective English courses during their studies at UNIMAS.
11.4 Registration For Generic and Elective Courses
Prior to registering, refer to the schedule provided for the list of

courses for that particular semester.
The number of credits for each semester has been pre-determined

by the faculty.
Registration for Generic and University Elective courses is done at

the beginning of a new semester.
Students must pass all of the courses listed. Otherwise, the course
will have to be repeated until a passing grade is obtained.
11.5 Rules and Regulations
All FMHS students are expected to:-
a) Take responsibility for meeting all the Generic and University

Elective courses‟ requirement.
b) Inform the Academic office of any irregularities that may
prevent them from graduating. This must be done at the earliest
opportunity.
UNIMAS has adopted a formal policy about attendance at all

scheduled teaching sessions (i.e. lectures, laboratory sessions,
clinical sessions, tutorials and presentations). Students will be
barred from sitting for the final examination of any courses
concerned if he/she has failed to attend a minimum of 90% of the
total scheduled teaching sessions.
If a student falls sick and cannot attend the scheduled teaching

session, he/she is expected to inform the lecturer concerned at least
an hour before the scheduled activity followed by submission of a
medical certificate at the next scheduled session.
The use of purchased air tickets will NOT be entertained as a valid

reason for re-scheduling of presentations or examinations.
Generic and University Elective examinations are synchronised

throughout the university and are scheduled to be held as follows:-
a) Mid Semester Examination - Week 7 or Week 8 of each

semester.
b) End of Semester Examination – UNIMAS Examination Week, at
the end of each semester.

12.0 SEXUAL HARASSMENT CODE
Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (UNIMAS) has in place, procedures to deal

with complaints about sexual harassment. Sexual harassment is defined
as uninvited, unwelcome, unwanted behaviour of a sexual nature, which
makes a person feel offended, humiliated or intimidated.
Sexual harassment manifests itself in five possible forms, namely:-
a) Verbal - Eg. offensive or suggestive remarks, comments, telling

crude jokes, innuendoes, sexually explicit conversation;
b) Non-verbal/Gesture – Eg. leering, ogling with suggestive overtones,
licking lip provocatively, hand signals or sign language denoting
sexual activity;
c) Visual – Eg. showing pornographic materials, offensive images,
drawing sex-based sketches or writing letters, sexual exposure;
d) Psychological – Eg. repeated unwanted social invitations, relentless
proposals for dates and intimacy;
e) Physical – Eg. Inappropriate behaviour such as touching, patting,
pinching, stroking, brushing up against someone, hugging, kissing,
fondling, sexual assault.
The university takes the issues of victimisation very seriously. All

enquiries and complaints are dealt with confidentially and impartially. If
you are experiencing a problem which you think might be sexual
harassment, contact your mentor/ Head of Department/ programme/
Deputy Dean/ Dean or trusted personnel in the university.
