The Way We Were*

Mem'ries light the corners of my mind. Misty water color mem'ries of the way we were. Scattered pictures of the smiles we left behind, smiles we gave to one another for the way we were. Can it be that it was all so simple then, or has time re-written ev'ry line? If we had the chance to do it all again, tell me would we? Could we? Mem'ries may be beautiful, and yet, what's too painful to remember we simply choose to forget. So it's the laughter we will remember, whenever we remember the way we were,. The way we were.

THE COAT OF ARMS OF SAINT JOHN'S UNIVERSITY

The Coat of Arms embodies the University's heritage. The cross proposes Christ as the center and model for moral and ethical character. The book, a symbol of learning, bears the words Ecce Agnus, the testimony of St. John the Baptist to the Divinity of Christ, translated "Behold the Lamb of God." The heart is the symbol of the charity of St. Vincent de Paul, founder of the Vincentian Fathers; it is silver to commemorate the first vision of St. Catherine La boure. The Fleur-de-lis is for France, birthplace of St. Vincent. Since it is the French form of the lily, the fleur-de-lis has a Marian significance, to remind of the dedication of the University to the Immaculate Heart of Mary. The escalloped shell, an ancient symbol for the sacrament of baptism, also signifies St. James the Greater, the titular of the ProCathedral of the Diocese of Brooklyn, in which the University was founded. The shell also signified an Indian name for Long Island, Sewanhacky, or "Island of Shells," the community which the University serves. The motto Educatio Christiana Animae Perfectio, (Christian Education Perfects the Soul) is from the encyclical of Pope Pius XI :n the Christian education of youth. The principal tinctures of the shield are blue and red, the liturgical colors of the Blessed Virgin and of the Humanity of her D,vine Son. Red and white (represented by silver in heraldry) are the traditional colors of the University.

The Student Bar Association is the official student government of the law school. It is composed of an Executive Board, House of Delegates and various standing committees. Each section annually selects representatives to the House, and members of the Executive Board are chosen in a school-wide election in March. The SBA is responsible for the majority of student-run clubs and activities as well as various other programs including intramural sports, the Law Formal, Book Co-op and Exchange, Elective seminar, freshmen orientation, the Weekly Calendar and other speaker programs and social affairs. Active contact is maintained with the Law Student Division of the ABA, the National Association of SBA's (NASBA), and neighboring law schools. Representatives are selected by the SBA to sit on the law school's library, placement, community service and faculty-student liaison committees. Further, the Academic VicePresident is the student representative on the Curriculum committee and the President is a member of the Faculty Council.

Learning the law is by no means a superficial task. In its proper pursuit, more than merely remembering the written word must be sought; the student must examine, explore, untangle and then, when all appears clear, question further still. It is with these thoughts that the members of the St. Thomas More Institute for Legal Research endeavor with earnest to advance the law and pursue the reasoning behind it. The fruits of this dedication are the St. John's Law Review and The Catholic Lawyer. Each issue of the Review contains both scholarly student works and authoritative articles written by distinguished members of the legal community. The Institute also is dedicated to examining the moral, ethical, and theological issues of our times. In The Catholic Lawyer these issues are presented and analyzed by outside authors and student members. In compiling Volume 54, we have strived to both continue the standards and meet the expectations of our predecessors. Faced with the challenge of a new format, success depended on the increased ardor of everyone on the Review. The task of augmenting the number of works by outside authors was met by our Articles department, which secured important works written by distinguished members of the bench and bar. By publishing articles covering topics of timely importance such as the jurisdiction of the New York Court of Appeals, the implication of legislation on franchise agreements, the status of military jurisdiction under the Posse Cornitatus Act, and developments in criminal identification procedures, we have attempted to present wide-ranging works of significance and utility. Volume 54 also represents the first attempt at replacing the Second Circuit issue with additional student notes. Toward this goal, the student-authored notes examined numerous topics of national import, including the an-

titrust liability of utilities causing price squeezes, the federal common law evidentiary privilege for state legislatures in federal criminal prosecutions, the defin tion of tender offers, and the scope of in personarjurisdiction in antitrust suits. Mindful of significardeveloj.iments in state law, the Survey of New York Prac tice has continued in the tradition of presenting studerauthored analyses of developments in New York substative and procedural law. By commenting on diversifies aspects of state law, we have attempted to enhance the utility of the Survey, a hallmark of the Review in recer years. Conforming to our new format also has resulted the expanded role of the Research department, which ha.: the responsibility of analyzing recent trends in the la.. and issuing memoranda which serve as the bases fcselecting note and article topics. These painstaking &forts played a major role in the accomplishment of goals. Volume 25 of The Catholic Lawyer has continued to c-fer thought-provoking articles, including one on the moral problems confronting attorneys in choosing cchanging careers. In addition to the annual publication cthe Diocesan Attorneys Papers, The Catholic Lawyer published papers presented at the 10th Congress of the International Movement of Catholic Jurists. The Pa; Romana papers cover a wide range of significant topics such as the protection of the citizen against the state, the new international economic order, and the protection the citizen against violence. This past year was marked by selfless dedication ar: comradery. We of Volume 54 hope that our publicatiore reflect the same. Moot Court is a student program designed to develop skills in legal research and writing, and to provide experience in the art of presenting appellate arguments. Students are admitted to the Junior Bar after their successful completion of one semester of competition. The objectives of the Criminal Law Institute are to allow members the opportunity to study in depth current problems of substantive and procedural criminal law; to provide opportunities to develop skills in criminal trial advocacy; to offer research facilities to law enforcement agencies as a public service; and to acquaint members of the Criminal Law Institute with prominent figures in the field of criminal law. The Criminal Law Institute achieves these objectives by sponsoring the Sparacio Trial Competition, a weekly lecture series and two public meetings. In addition, the Institute publishes the Federal Case Review and performs research projects for practicing criminal attorneys.

The purpose of the Admiralty Law Society is to provide a forum for students interested in this specialized area of law. With the assistance of advisor Professor Calamari, its objectives have been directed primarily at enabling each member to develop his own interests through guided research, a speaker program, and exposure to practical aspects of maritime commerce. The Society is seeking to provide a means whereby members will be afforded the opportunity to gain greater familiarity with the maritime bar a practice of importance in the area, and one in which many St. John's alumni have distinguished themselves.

The Tax Club is an organization designed to permit those students with an interest in the field of taxation to increase their knowledge in the field and to explore various problems involving taxation. This year the Tax Club continued its two major publications: The Tax Newsletter a compilation of student articles, and the Tax Digest, which offers brief analyses of recent important tax case law. Our membership also contributed a number of articles to Balance. A speaker's program with a decidedly practical slant was the Careers in Taxation Conference held during the fall semester. In order to provide our membership with an opportunity to acquire and improve upon those practical skills necessary in the tax field, the Tax Club sponsored lectures on tax return preparation and tax research. In the spring semester many of our members volunteered for a program designed to aid low-income tax payers in the preparation of their returns.

Continuing its ten year tradition of reporting the news of the law school and developments in the law, the FORUM covered a wide spectrum of events and topics during the '79/'80 academic year. News ranged from stories concerning the Moot Court competitions, the CLI trials and the Tinnelly Competition, to articles covering the disappearance of the Cardozo book collection, the number of professors at St. John's, and the campus auto theft situation. Regular features in the newspaper included "Decisions, Decisions ... ", intramurals, the eagerly awaited crossword puzzles, Ariel Sinnick's inimitably inane pronunciations, and staff artist Sullivan's cartoons. Because the FORUM is the voice of student opinion, emphasis is placed on participation by all students in all areas of the newspaperfrom writing and Letters to the Editor, to proofreading, photography, layout and headline creation. Communication is the FORUM's goalamong students, between students and faculty, between students and the law, and between students and the administration.

BALANCE

Aware of the need for a scholarly publication that would treat a wide spectrum of legal topics with specificity, the law school administration in 1976 introduced an innovative professional journal, Balance. Designed to address current legal developments of particular interest to the profession, its articles have spanned issues in criminal law, family law, constitutional law, and the law of tax, labor, real property, and admiralty. Each official student activity within the law school is eligible to contribute articles to Balance. Articles selected for publication are judged on the quality of the author's research and writing ability. Preparation of a paper for Balance requires a thorough study of the history of a particular issue, a detailed analysis of the rationale of pertinent court decisions, and an assessment of the impact of statutes or policies involved. The future of Balance is promising. Recent years have shown a significant increase of interest in the work product of the many student activities of the law school. Publication of Balance represents an effort to bring together the best written materials of these activities and demonstrates a recognition that participation in these organizations is an integral part of the law school experience. It is the sincere hope of the editor, the advisory board, and the staff of Balance that the publication of this professional journal has contributed to the legal profession and has enhanced the reputation of St. John's University School of Law.

The Environmental and Energy Law Club is open to any student who has an interest in learning about this expanding and increasingly important field of law. The Club's lecture series gives students an opportunity to meet individuals who are active in the field, and emphasis is placed on the expanding career opportunities in environmental and energy law.

The family law society is a club devoted to the understanding of the family law and the legal, social and other agencies which function in the area of domestic relations. The meetings offer an opportunity to meet others, learn about the activities in the school, and to become more closely involved in the experience of a legal education. Auxiliary members share a common bond, contributing to the moral and sometimes monetary support of a student engaged in one of the most demanding of graduate programs. Phi Alpha Delta is the largest professional law fraternity in the world. Currently, PAD has a total membership of over 8: student and attorney members. PAD has 158 chartered chapters at accredited law schools and has alumni chapters metropolitan areas in North America. The motto of PAD is, "Service to the Student, the Law School and the Profession." Our goals include: 1) bringing law st,_ _together with practicing attorneys; 2) providing students with practical information and legal skills generally untouchec academic curriculums; 3) providing valuable contacts and job placement assistance. The size, strength and organiza*, PAD affords members greater potential career contacts than any other legal fraternity. At the local level, the deBracton Chapter, although relatively small, has become more active and visible in the St. John's School comm unity. During the past year, some of the chapter's activities have included the annual PAD Thanksgiving Drive -1! PAD Exam Service, book sales and job placement. The deBracton Chapter offers to all students the opportunity to join the largest and most prestigious international ,ers fraternity. PAD is neither "exclusive" nor "discriminatory" in the traditional fraternity sense. PAD membership provides ta ble benefits to the student while in law school and after graduation continues to provide valuable contacts, services fellowship throughout his or her legal career.

This year Phi Delta Phi continued a tradition of providing a very much needed social outlet for the law school community. Taft Inn eased the rigors of academic life with monthly smokers, as well as with pinpoint harpooning of selected faculty members at roasts. Taft Inn also functions here at the law school outside the social sphere. It operates an exam file for use of its members and holds seminars to help familiarize new students with exam taking techniques. The fraternity conducted its annual Christmas Charity Drive for underprivileged children. It also continued to operate one of the most valuable services at the law school: the coffee machine. Membership in Phi Delta Phi is a valuable asset to St. John's students, providing not only fellowship for its members while in law school, but a continuing relationship after graduation and throughout their careers.

In keeping with this year's Res Gestae theme, the editors have endeavored to encompass within these covers a composite of memories representative of the times we of the St. John's community have shared. Each of uswhether a member of the student body, faculty or administrationhas gathered his or her own personal memories of the St. John's years. All of us together have experienced the elements of joy and sorrow, failure and triumph, growth and friendship that transform daily academic life into a meaningful experience. We have attempted to reflect in this yearbook a little bit of each facet of that academic life, that your memories of St. John's University School of Law may thereby be enriched. In Memoriam REV. JOHN E. SAVAGE, C.M.

Our beloved Law School Chaplain, Rev. John E. Savage, C.M., died suddenly on Monday, February 11, 1980, at the age of 61. From 1973, when Father Savage was appointed Law School Chaplain, until the time of his death, this gifted priest was a source of guidance and inspiration to those of every faith and creed who sought his counsel. Despite frequent illness and pain, Father Savage was involved in every aspect of law school life. He acquainted himself with the language of the law so that he could converse with faculty and students on their own terms. He directed charity drives, offered courses for the Law School Auxiliary, served as a script consultant for student theatrical productions and provided considerable informal advice to many of the cocurricular organizations at the law school. He was a superb speaker who regularly received standing ovations at law school functions. His homilies at the annual Red Mass and addresses to entering law students were inspirational and memorable. He imbued the law school community with his awareness that the law is a profession grounded in morality and justice. Father Savage was totally dedicated to the students, staff, faculty and alumni of the law school and his love and devotion were reciprocated in equal measure. In 1975 the students expressed their respect and appreciation by honoring him as Man of the Year. Father Savage received his B.A. degree from Fordham University and his M.A. from Niagara University, as well as a Certificate from the University of Havana. He was ordained to the priesthood as a member of the Vincentian community on May 26, 1945. Before his assignment as Law School Chaplain, Father Savage taught Spanish at Niagara University, served as a missionary in Panama, where he directed a Catholic radio station, served as an instructor in medical ethics at the St. Catherine Labour& Nursing School in Massachusetts and was Assistant Dean of the School of General Studies at St. John's University. In addition, for ten years of his ministry, Father Savage preached devotion to the Miraculous Medal to thousands of people throughout the United States. His whole career was one of love of God and fellow man. Much of the good that Father Savage accomplished at the Law School took the form of counselling and assistance to individual members of the law school community. Since this work was of a highly confidential nature, its depth and breadth will never truly be known. What is known is that St. John's Law School has lost a man of devotion, wisdom and love. Hopefully the spirit and enthusiasm which he generated will remain with the Law School for many years to come. May he rest in God's eternal peace.
