See! Colour!
From 15th of May to 2nd of October Jrna becomes the stage of the unique event SEE! COLOUR! Presenting four parallel exhibitions spread over the entire campus including numerous lectures, guided tours, workshops, movies, conferences and events. All of this will take place in and around Kulturhuset in Jrna, Sweden.

one of the worlds leading artists working with the

theme of light, colour and space, will create a number of large installations. There will also be an exhibition on Goethes Colour Theory with interactive colour experiments and a series of outdoor colour installations in the garden. Paintings from Hilma af Klint, the increasingly well renowned Swedish artist, will be displayed in addition to a selection of Rudolf Steiners original blackboard drawings, one of them shown for the first time ever. The architecture of Ytterjrna provides the perfect setting, as it is in itself a colour experience.

SEE! COLOUR! is organized by Kulturforum Jrna. Partners of the

various exhibitions and events are: James Turrell, Husler Contemporary, Hilma af Klint Foundation, the Goetheanum/Switzerland, Rudolf Steiner Archive, among others.

CATCHING THE LIGHT
James Turrell is an American artist

working with light, colour and space and is one of the worlds leading artists in this field. He exhibits at many prestigious art museums around the world and has created
permanent installations in 26 countries. Turrell is well known for conveying a sensation of infinite

space through the way he presents colour and light in confined structures. His most outstanding work is Roden Crater, an extinct volcano in Arizona, USA , which is probably the worlds largest art work. He is transforming the crater into a large observatory, designed to experience day and night sky light in a unique way. His art invites the viewer to explore their perception and how they react to what they see. For SEE! COLOUR! James Turrell is planning to create several large installations including a permanent Skyspace, a Dark Space, a Tall Glass and a walk-in-coloursculpture, a so called Ganzfeld (18 x 12 x 10 m). Additionally, there will be an exhibition with a range of existing works by Turrell, including models and pictures of Roden Crater and various Skyspaces from around the world. James Turrell will be present during SEE! COLOUR! at several occasions to speak about his work.

Colour experienCe and experimenT

The all-round genius Goethe has had a major impact on how we apply colour in different contexts. With his interdisciplinary Colour Theory, Goethe worked with simple experiments and observations highlighting colour in all its depth and richness. The Colour Theory is connected to physics, chemistry, biology, physiology, psychology, art history, cultural history and various practical fields. In SEE! COLOUR! visitors can experience and study many of Goethes experiments on colour. An exhibition celebrating the 200th anniversary of Goethes Colour Theory which was set up by the Science Section of the Goetheanum, Switzerland, is currently travelling Europe and a Swedish-English version will be on display at SEE! COLOUR!

COLOUR PHENOMENA IN THE GARDEN

Colour brings life and joy. It speaks to our feelings, creating atmospheres. It likes to play with us, mock us and pulls away as soon as we try to capture it and put it into a system. In vain we try to reveal colours deepest secret. Colour lives in border areas, weaving between light and darkness, between heaven and earth, between thought and will. Nature is both directly and indirectly the largest source of colour and colour experiences. People have always been interested in cultivating, shaping and enjoying natures beauty and its colours in outdoor light. SEE! COLOUR! offers an outdoor colour experience and will host a number of pieces demonstrating colour phenomena, displayed in a unique way.

Hilma af KlinT

It becomes increasingly clear that Swedish artist Hilma af Klint (1862 1944) is one of modern arts important pioneers. In recent decades, her rich artistry has been met with growing interest around the world and she is currently the only Swedish artist from early modernism acknowledged at an international level. Hilma af Klint was first recognised in the international art world in 1986 through a major exhibition at Los Angeles County Museum of Art with the title The Spiritual in Art: Abstract Painting 1890 1985.

This exhibition brought about a sensational breakthrough and, for the first time, gave modernism a strong female figurehead. In an exhibition in SEE! COLOUR! a selection of Hilma af Klints work will be displayed, with an emphasis on her original and symbolic use of colour. In 2013, the Moderna Museet, Stockholm, will show a big retrospective exhibition of her work.

Rudolf Steiner was initially known as a litterate, Goethe researcher, publisher and philosopher. Later on, he called his ideas Anthroposophy and described it as a path, or more a becoming conscious of ones own humanness. Today, he is especially known as the founder of the many practical applications that developed from his work: Waldorf education, biodynamic agriculture, Anthroposophical medicine, and more. Inspired by Goethe, Steiner developed his own theories on colour and formed thoughts regarding the application of colour in areas such as education, art and therapy. Above all he was a lecturer he held around 6000 lectures within his lifetime. He illustrated his lectures with blackboard sketches, of which 1100 survived until today. With Joseph Beuys expanded understanding of art, Steiners blackboard drawings became art that has been displayed in great museums around the globe. An exhibition within the frame of SEE! COLOUR! will show 24 blackboard drawings by Rudolf Steiner, some of them especially on the theme colour, one of them displayed for the first time ever.

COLOURFUL EXHIBITION ENVIRONMENT

In addition to SEE! COLOUR! the surrounding campus provides a remarkable setting that adds dimensions and depth to the exhibitions theme. The unique architecture by Erik Abbi Asmussen in the entire area is created with a well thought through colour scheme by Fritz Fuchs. SEE! COLOUR! also builds up on Arne Klingborgs series of exhibitions in the years 1970-1990.

ACTIVITIES
Parallel to the various exhibitions SEE! COLOUR! presents a wide range of activities and events on the theme colour.

WORKSHOPS AND COURSES

Visitors will have the opportunity to participate in a number of workshops and courses connected to colour. including painting, drawing and eurythmy.

LECTURES
Throughout the exhibition period from May until October 2011, there will be a number of presentations about each part of the exhibition. Lectures will also be given on several occasions before the opening of the exhibition, from February to April.

FILM SCREENING
Several films and slide shows related to the exhibitions theme will be regularly displayed on James Turrells works, Goethes Colour Theory, the colour phenomena in the atmosphere, and others.

CONFERENCES AND SPECIAL EVENTS

In July (10th15th), there will be a conference with the American physics professor Arthur Zajonc on his book Catching the Light, which is about light and consciousness and how people have looked at light and colour throughout history. Several conferences and special events will take place during the exhibition period. In addition, other organizations and groups have the possibility of connecting their conferences and meetings to SEE! COLOUR!

RESTAURANT AND HOTEL

Ytterjrna Restaurang will be serving meals, and Jrna Kaf in Kulturhuset offers light lunches and freshly baked bread. All organic! Just in time for the opening of SEE! COLOUR! there are 40 fully refurbished hotel rooms available for overnight visitors in the Hotel Kulturhuset.

MUSIC AND DRAMA

The exhibition will also feature performing arts, music and events in Kulturhuset and on the entire exhibition campus.
