She: A history Of Adventure

A fantasy/adventure novel by Henry Rider Haggard, published in 1887.

A first person narrative that follows Harace Holly, and his Ward Leo Vincey. through his adventures in the lost kingdom Kr, an abandoned city in Africa, once the home of an advanced Egyptian civilisation, whos Queen lives under a dormant volcano, in a series of catacombs, where Holly first meets the Queen, Ayesha. They learn of her immortality and her waiting of her reincarnated Lover, who should had slain in a jealous rage, who is believed to be Hollys ward, Leo. Ayesha kills again out of jealousy, slaying Leos and Hollys female friend, but both are stuck in her grasp because of her beauty. Convinced Leo is indeed the reincarnation of her lover, she leads them to a magical fire which granted her immortality, in hope that Leo will gain the same powers, so they can always remain together.

The book was written in a time where South Africa was being annexing by the British, and in 1877 was the annexation of Transvaal, which was the largest event of the time. Haggard took part in expedition that established British control over the Boer Republic, which Haggard was very proud of doing so. He aspired to one day govern over an South African colony himself, like his Boss, Sir Henry Buwler, who he was a secretary to. His interest in colonies, African landscapes, and his own adventure, inspired his work to create one of the most influential books of all time.

The Chosen 3 Scenes.

The city of Kor. I want to capture my image of the city Ayesha reigns in. From reading the excerpt, it is a beauty city, with amazing craftsmanship, where the architecture features organic and natural shapes, and feminine curves, beautiful like the nature around it. Although the city is very much dead, I want to express how to me, I imagine it to be alive, over grown by nature, as if the city now belongs to nature itself. The time of the setting in the book was at sunset, so the main colour schemes will be generally warm and beautiful.

The Angel Statue This scene they encounter the most beautiful, perfect marble statue of an Angel kneeling down, preparing for an embrace. It is surrounded by columns and is drowned in moonlight, entrancing those who see it. I want to create the scene with mysterious purples and pure blues, to create a feeling of a magical beauty, like the city it is placed in.

The enchanted Fire.

When reading this excerpt, I had the visual image in my head of the light from the fire creating lots of reflections on the stone, with lots of movement, and with a real atmosphere of worship and magic. I wanted to create this scene with a dominating colour of red, but with a spectrum of bright fantastic colours to really create a feel of magic.

Influential Artists
Claude Monet
1840-1926 The founder of French impressionist painting, expressing ones perception before nature. Monets work captures movement and the most beautiful combination of colours which really fascinates me. Though the style is not of what Im aiming for, for this project, the use of colour and atmosphere most certainly is. He captures movement through his brushstrokes, and uses interesting composition to include the viewer into the piece. His history is truly inspiring and his work is awe worthy.
Camille Monet at her tapestry loom, 1875

Study of a Figure Outdoors: Woman with a Parasol, facing left, 1886.

Thero Prins
A Californian artist, who has worked freelance since 2007. His personal work focuses on Urban scenery, and his most recent commercial work was concept art for Guild Wars 2. The colours he chooses are stunning, and the use of the brush strokes, and the feeling of the transparency of the strokes creates such an atmosphere, with strong lighting and interesting composition.

Adam Adamowicz
1968-2012 A polish concept artist, who grew up in New York best known for his work at Bethesda Softworks. Adamowicz inspires me through his blog, where he shows the steps and thought process of his work. I had been a fan of his blog for a year, and was upset to find out it had come to an end. His work inspires me to work, and the worlds he creates are full of personality. Its mainly his thumbnails which interest me most.

Scene 1: The city Of Kor

I want to emphasise on nature in these thumbnails and create the sunset affect with the warm colour scheme. Scene 2: Angel statue

Here I think the angle is most important and The moonlight reflecting.

Scene 3: Magical Fire

I think the purple and red scheme is stronger as The purple suggests magic and is generally More exciting.

Creative Partner Archive

I have been discussing work with my creative partners in both person and on facebook. We mainly discuss influences, and their advice regarding perception has helped greatly. Here Is a facebook conversation we recently had. Lucy Yelding Hey guys as we got to show a bit more communication by thursday, and we haven;t uploaded all that much D: shall we have some heart to heart for our work here just to we can copy pasta it into our presentation? Anim MA i ll be uploading my thumbnails in few minutes Katy Fosdike Ah cool, it'll be good to see how you've interpreted the scenes! Lucy Yelding excited to see your drawing style too Anim MA Lucy, you thumbnail are pretty nice.....do you have an influence map to show your colour scheme and influences in your drawings. Katie we have the same book, have you decided about the set for both stories? Katy Fosdike I've chosen my 3 scenes, 2 from The Red Room and 1 from The Magic Shop... All of them seem to revolve around doors, so. I'm trying to find ways around that Lucy Yelding Yeah Am posting it all together tomorrow. I made them a while ago but I don't have photoshop atm to present them. Downloading the trial now what programmes have you guys been using to present your influences? Katy Fosdike I've just been using Photoshop, it's the easiest one to use for that sort of thing Lucy Yelding sweet i have all the images in a folder just need to slap them on the template as soon as the demo downloads Anim get those thumbnails up! hehe

Anim MA I have just scanned my thumbnails i ve done so far, as well as some photos I have retouched on photoshop to give it a scary look for the Red Room story Lucy Yelding sweet cant wait Anim MA it's on, sorry for the delay Lucy Yelding hey i like how you're experimenting with editing photos really awesome idea I know it's difficult, and I haven't read your books, but you both seem to be stuck on drawing doors? I don't really know what else to suggest, but maybe you can use camera angles and kinda the "lens" on the "camera" to create atmosphere? like almost a fish eye lens sort of drawing, depending on what sort of room you're going to create? Lucy Yelding as just a room with doors doesn't really say much. D: again i havent read your books and im not actually coming up with anything better Katy Fosdike most of the extracts focus on the doorways, it's something that has to be included into the images.. its the space around them that we can improve and the effects used to create atmosphere but, that gets a bit difficult sometimes Lucy Yelding i wasn't trying to suggest taking away the doors, sorry am not being clear. I was trying to say creating a lens affect to create atmosphere Katy Fosdike Ah okay, I follow.. Yeah, that might be something to take into consideration Anim MA yes I understand what you mean, I will try it out, it will give the atsmophere a kind of a deep look

Katy Fosdike I'm going to draw out loads of thumbnails tomorrow and try be a bit more creative and less restricted with them this time round Anim MA yes Katy, I agree on that point, once I have taken a look at some phil's suggestions such as the 'wunderkammers' I will have more ideas for the set details and use different angles Lucy Yelding i can't really think what else to do with doorways lol XD but angle is really something that makes an image (didnt come up with this my self, credit to 2nd years xD) Katy Fosdike the theatre set concept is a good one as well, the exaggeration in the images is something to include Yeah, I've been trying to work out perspectives etc to see which ones create the best atmosphere Anim MA yes, perspective is quite tricky though Katy Fosdike Using Photoshop Phil's techniques from Friday helped me out a bit.. You could try that? using a horizon line etc? Anim MA especially the grid Lucy Yelding I know Escher is a very famous artist and you've both probably already looked at him, but just incase https://www.google.co.uk/search?num=10&hl=en&site=imghp&tbm=isch&sourc e=hp&biw=1600&bih=809&q=escher&oq=escher&gs_l=img.3..0l10.403.1054.0. 1131.6.5.0.1.1.0.141.458.3j2.5.0...0.0...1ac.1.frwZmTwJlxI he does wacky work with perception and door way /stair case art. And another silly suggestion XD
