Notes From the Pastor: This Sunday is Respect for Life Sunday and marks the beginning anew of the Respect for Life Program of the US Catholic Bishops which includes among other things the March for Life in January 2013. Human life is sacred! The theme for this years program is taken from Pope Benedict XVI Statement: Faith opens our eyes to human life in all its grandeur and beauty." We as Catholics will be called to renew our personal commitment to defend all human life, especially the most vulnerable members of the human family. We will demonstrate this commitment in a variety of ways - by participating in prayer services and educational conferences, engaging in public witness and advocacy, and helping to offer church and community services to those in need. One of the activities here close to us is the Life Chain event in Pittsburg this afternoon from 3 to 4PM along Broadway Street. Participants will stand along Broadway and hold signs with anti-abortion messages while praying silently. You are all invited to join. Signs can be picked up at 8 th and Broadway at 2:45 PM. Also, as part of our celebration of the 125th year anniversary as a diocese, there are pilgrimages to some churches scheduled throughout the diocese. One is right next to us: Saint Francis Hieronymo Church at Saint Paul. It starts today until Thursday, October 11 th. (Kindly look at the details below.) Also this Sunday is the feast of Our Lady of the Rosary! I have written a somewhat exhaustive article at our website. I hope youll give a little of your time to read it and reflect upon the importance and effectiveness of the rosary in our Catholic life! I also encourage all our families especially this month to pray the rosary daily! It is really an effective prayer. We have lots of testimonies of how the rosary have helped the lives of those who believe and pray with it in times of need! This Thursday will be the opening of the Year of Faith which will run from October 11th, 2012 to November 24th, 2013! The date was specifically chosen by our Holy Father because it coincides with the 50th anniversary of the opening of Vatican II. It also marks 20 years since the Catechism of the Catholic Church was published. The church hopes that the celebration of the combination of these key anniversaries, will help promote awareness. According to the pope's Apostolic letter, titled Porta Fidei the goal of the initiative is conversion and to re-discover faith, so that all Next Sunday(10/14/2012) 10:00 AM E. Wilson, J. Duling, M. members of the Church can become credible witnesses of truth. For this to happen, the apostolic letter, recommends action be taken on four different levels: 1st- at the universal level the Pope aims at promoting unity among all Christians, especially during the World Youth Day 2013 in Rio. Second- at the level of Episcopal Conferences through improve quality of instruction and catechesis and the use of new media in communication, Third- at the Diocesan level - promote healthy discussions between faith and reason by organizing conferences and meetings, especially in universities. 4th at the parish level - the focus will remain on celebrating Mass, since it's here that the faithful can celebrate and strengthen their relationship with faith and the Church. Here at Saint Michael, we will offer our mass that Wednesday night for that intention! Our mass Thursday morning in Arma coincides on that day and will be offered in unity with the universal church. Having mentioned all these celebrations, you will notice that they are all tied up with the Pope, with our Bishop, as we are united with the universal church. This is what is meant to be a Church and this what is intended by our Lord Jesus Christ, read Matthew 16:18. It is sad to note that there were a couple of comments on our Mission Statement which said that they see the hand of the Bishop on the formulating of our Mission Statement. While I appreciate their giving of their comments, I am also at the same time obliged to correct them.
