New Testament 3 Syllabus Introduction Now we have an encounter with the other apostles after the resurrection and

the birth of the church. Some scholars make much ado about the differences between the other apostles and Paul. I suggest as the Pauline epistles were situational, so are the General epistles. Most of these were probably written later then Pauls letters and such dealt with different challenges. They also were written to different people in different locations and so had different issues to deal with. I suggest instead of different theologies you look at these letters as complimentary theologies of Paul. Purpose: 1. To give the student the familiarity with General epistles of the New Testament and the book of Revelation. 2. To grasp balance in New Testament doctrine. 3. To understand how those who follow Christ have a higher calling. 4. To gain a further understanding of different eschatologys. Required texts: Note: Some of these texts will be used for more then one course and are not required to be read in their entirety for this course. Wiersbe The Letters of John and Jude (New Daily Study Bible) by William Barclay Learn The Bible in 24 Hours by Chuck Missler Assignments The student is required to complete all reading, discussion, and writing assignments. There is a substantial amount of reading and writing to do in this course so the forum work will be lightened to compensate. This course will have more self direction in terms of what you personally decide to focus in on your writing. What you put in is what you will get out. I Interactive assignments (Due each week posted) Most weeks there will be questions that you will be required to answer posted on the course web site. You are required to respond online to each question by Wednesday and then by Friday read all responses and then thoughtfully reflect to at least one (more then one is good!) other persons posting. These answers and responses should be substantial, meaning they require more then a single paragraph that expresses some thought concerning the question. It would also be beneficial to reflect on someones answer that has not had someone else respond to their thoughts. II Reading and writing assignment (Due Sunday week 1) Note: Read each of your texts only where specifically stated. They may be used again in further courses. Make a careful note of what to read in each of your texts.

Important Note: Reading levels are different for different books. Take note of the introduction to the Pastoral Leadership Institute on reading for all courses and note whether the reading level is 1, 2, or 3. A popular survey of the New Testament should be read at #1 reading level. A Popular Survey of the New Testament read from James to Revelation 1. Briefly summarize what the author states about each of the General epistles and Revelation (2-3 double space pages total) III Reading and writing assignment (Due Sunday week 2) Halleys bible handbook- from James to Revelation Reading level: 1 Choose 2 subjects that interested or intrigued you that Halley mentions dealing with the General Epistles or Revelation and write about these subjects from his and your own perspective (1 double spaced page for each, for a total of 2 pages). IV Reading and writing assignment (Due Sunday week 3) With The Word Bible Commentary (Bible Handbook) James to Revelation Reading level: 2. Read with your Bible close at hand so you grasp the context of each chapter. Write a 2-5 page sermon based on one of the chapters in Wiersbe, of your own choosing. V Reading and writing assignment (Due Sunday week 4) The Letters of John and Jude (New Daily Study Bible) Reading level: 2. After reading this classic commentary, write a 2-5 page sermon on one of the topics that Barclay covers. (2-5 double spaced pages). VI Reading and writing assignment (Due Sunday week 5) Learn The Bible in 24 Hours- Matthew to Revelation Reading level: 1. 1. Write a sentence or single short paragraph about something the writer brings out about each book of the NT. This is to be short, just about what may have caught your attention and why. VII Exam There will be an exam in this course. You will be asked to write all the names of the books of the New Testament in order with a phrase or sentence that briefly describes what makes each a unique book (other then who it was written to i.e. Galatians was written to the Galatians.). Also write about the 4 major forms of interpretation used in interpreting Revelation and how each potentially effects how we derive application from this final book of the Bible. Marking You will be marked on how well you did each part of your assignment in terms of content and thoughtfulness. Make certain you answer all questions in writing assignments.
