Executive Director Message

I feel very privileged to be writing this message as the Executive Director of Organization for Human Development (OHD). We began our journey since August 2010, when the devastating flood hit many districts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa by helping the affected families through self funded activities. Later on during June, 2011, OHD was registered. We have spent the last year continuing to build our organizational capacities, which has now become synonymous with our commitment, goals and objectives to reach the vulnerable communities, safeguard their rights and lead them towards sustainable development. Looking ahead, we are focused on strengthening citizen voice, gender development and improving standard of living within our intervention areas. It is our commitment to bring a positive change to the communities in which we work and live. I am incredibly excited about this journey and truly believe the best of OHD is yet to come.

Amjad Ali Executive Director Organization for Human Development

Executive Summary OHD (Organization for Human Development) is a nationally recognized non-governmental organization that strives to improve the lives of under developed and vulnerable communities with special focus on women, youth and children in Khyber. The organization started its activities from the grass root level with self support and now it is working at province level in different districts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa with the support of different national and internal funding agencies. OHD with minimum financial resources came forward to help the flood affected communities during 2010. Hygiene kits distribution were distributed in a joint activity of OHD and SDO with the support of UNICEF and ACD, helping 200 families. After getting registered OHD started different awareness campaigns. In the same context OHD started a self funded project on utilization of digital media for preventing conflictive sentiments in Pakhtoon society by introducing a cultural base drama. This resulted awareness in the local communities that weapons and fighting are not our sentiments. To be a cultured and successful nation we need to be educated. OHD considered a strong correlation of education with social and economic development. Quality Education can reduce poverty and social injustice by providing the underprivileged resources and opportunities for upward social mobility and social inclusion. Keeping this in view OHD is working on education sector reforms with the support of USAID. The proposed project is to increase parents participation in school governance and achieving 100% enrollment rate with low or no dropout with a focus on quality education. Along with this OHD is also working on a project with Bacha Khan Trust Education Foundation (BKTEF) to develop creative thinking of primary schools children in District Mardan. Current Projects Currently OHD is working on two projects which are as follow: 1. Improving School Governance 2. Developing Creating thinking of Primary Schools Students 1. Improving School Governance Education is considered to have a strong correlation with social and economic development. Quality Education can reduce poverty and social injustice by providing the underprivileged resources and opportunities for upward social mobility and social inclusion. OHD with a core objective of human development has designed education based project in District Mardan, which is the second largest city of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa with a population of 1.96 million (projected 2008). Like the rest of the country Mardan District is facing many problems. There are 1,328 functional government primary schools in district Mardan with 776 boys and 552 girls schools. While at Secondary level, total functional Schools are 318 including 174 male and 144 female Schools. The gross enrolment ratio in government primary schools of Mardan is 64%. The overall gross enrolment ratio of schools in District Mardan is 83%, depicting that about 17% at Primary level school going children are out of school.

Launching Ceremony of the Project Keeping in view the situation, OHD proposed a project in such a way which emphasis on the social accountability to make the school governance and its services delivery better with the participation of local communities. For this purpose Community Score Card Approach will be implemented to empower the local community to play active role in school governance in order to ensure quality teachers performance and regularity, transparent use of school

budget and other resources, higher enrolment, controlled dropout and better quality of education. The Community Score Card will be advocated at district level and will also advocate institutionalizing across the district for better governance of education system. To get desired goals and objectives of the project, Parents Teachers Council (PTCs) will be strengthened to function better by different trainings and capacity building sessions. Along with this to mainstream gender in development, Mother groups will be formed and their capacities will be build up to ensure better school governance and utilization of resources in girls schools.

2. Developing Creative Thinking in Primary Schools Children (OHD) Organization for Human Development is working on the project, Creative thinking of Primary school children of district Mardan, which consists of 74 Union Councils and two Tehsils. Although, total population (aged 5 to 18 years ) of the district including boys and girls will be targeted, specific interventions will be undertaken for facilitating issuance of certificates of excellence to all participant students of the district. The primary objective is to increase the interest of students to think innovatively. It is an experience that the students at primary level have no interest in studies. The Aim of the project is to give some opportunities to the primary school kids to participate in some health activities, for this OHD will try to educate them in a healthier environment through quiz competition and exhibition than the traditional method. The project will also focus on giving awareness to the kids about the province and about the Pakhtoon nation. It will try throughout the project to suggest some useful and result oriented methods to the faculty members of the schools. Following procedure will be adopted for the completion of the project. 1. Mobile project teams at each Tehsil carrying special prepared Booklets and invitation letters to motivate and facilitate Teachers (Male/Female) to request for forth coming quiz competition. 2. One Meeting at the school levels to motivate students and their Teachers to join cocurricular activities. 3. Help Schools in the district to get better organization of co-curricular activities by providing them one trained person, who also know how to select competent children for coming activities. 4. Motivation for schools to join the exhibition.

OHD Competed Projects Although OHD is in its growth stage but its young, qualified and ambitious staff has proven their capabilities to help the effected and marginalized communities with minimum financial resources. The belief that struggle and hard work with an objective to help the people in need made OHD an effective and leading organization of District Mardan. Following is an overview of the projects completed by OHD: 1. Hygiene Kits Distribution in Flood effected Communities The worst and devastating flood in a massive destruction at community level disturbed the life & living condition of people. One of the worst flood affected area was District Mardan. 2. Facts Finding About Education

Girls Primary School of Chamtar and Boys Primary School of Khazana Deharay

3. Utilization of digital media for preventing conflictive sentiments in Pakhtoon society by introducing a cultural base drama of Pakhtoon culture The cultural values of a community give it an identity of its own. A community gains a character and a personality of its own, because of the culture of its people. Culture is shared by the members of a community. It is learned and passed from the older generations to the newer ones. For an effective transfer of culture from one generation to another, it has to be translated into symbols. Language, art and religion serve as the symbolic means of transfer of cultural values between generations. Media play a vital role in transmitting cultural values in todays world. The positive role can lead to betterment while its negative role can lead towards destruction of new generation. Majority of Pashto movies shows weapons and fighting which is not the true presentation of Pakhtoon Society. OHD started this project to give awareness to the new generation what are real cultural values of Pakhtoon Society.

Success Story Back to School with a Smile

Education helps men and women to claim their rights and realize their potential in the economic, political and social arenas. It is also the single most powerful way to lift people out of poverty. Education plays a particularly important role as a foundation for girls development towards adult life. Most of us realize the importance of education but when it comes to practicality, many of us step back. There are many social constraints, in which both society as well as teacher themselves are involved. Teacher plays a very important role in educating their students, but sometime due to their harsh behavior or corporal punishment, many of children discontinue their studies. The same happened with children of Usman Gul of Jala Kaly. His four female children were beaten by her school teacher which resulted their dropout from school. Taking opportunity the childrens uncle stopped them to re-admit them in any school. The issue was raised during a meeting with female community. The OHD staff visited both the effected family as well as the concerned management of Government Girls School of Jalal Kaly. The OHD staff negotiated with the school management and the parent to re-admit the dropout students. The teacher realized her mistake and misunderstanding was cleared. All the four children were re-admitted in their school. The happiness of their smiling faces cant be expressed in words when they were back to their classroom. Both the teacher and parents thanked OHD staff for saving life of the children by solving the issue.
