Innolume announces next generation of Quantum Dot based LD-12XX-series laser diode
Keeping output characteristics the same - 350mW kink-free output power and Fiber Bragg Grating stabilized spectrum in 1180nm up to 1270nm wavelength range, new LD-12XX-series lasers has substantially improved wall-plug efficiency. The main differentiation compared to the previous generation is a higher operating temperature of the laser chip which allowed shifting the maximum of wall-plug efficiency to higher environment temperatures. As a result, the wall-plug efficiency of the butterfly packaged laser including TEC (thermoelectric cooler) exceeds 16% at 40C case temperature which is typical for the environment in PON equipment racks and by that leading to a significant reduction of power consumption. This optimization supports our customers in further improving of their products already introduced to the market, says Guido Vogel, Managing Director of Innolume, and by that bring even more benefits of Raman based GPON Reach Extension to network operators compared to conventional Reach Extenders based on Semiconductor Optical Amplifiers (SOA). www.innolume.com
ficonTEC now provides a thermocompression die bonder as well as a semi-automatic tabletop die bonder
The number of upcoming applications in the broad area of micro assembly tasks which are or need to be automated is rapidly increasing. Within, the larger variety of handled components, bond materials, and most importantly assembly processes call for new and innovative tools. To serve that demand ficonTEC released two brand new products. The BL100 is a eutectic die bonder which expands ficonTEC's die bonder product family to the more manually operated side. The table-top BL100 utilizes
Photovoltaic Report
Photovoltaic industry revenues reached a record $US 93 billion in 2011, a 13.4% increase over $US 82 billion in 2010, and a 150% increase over revenues in 2009. World-wide, 27.4 Gwatts of PV were installed, bringing cumulative PV electrical generation capacity to 68 Gwatts at the end of 2011. Our data show that installations grew by 56% compared to 2010. Europe remains the leader for deployment, accounting for more than 63% of the PV installations world-wide. These percentage figures are lower than those for 2010, and they indicate the growing importance of PV markets outside of Europe, and in particular in China. For the first time ever, more PV generating power was installed in Europe than any other energy source, surpassing both natural gas and wind turbine generation.
17th meeting of the International Optoelectronics Association in Yokohama. The next meeting will take place in Brussels in conjunction with EPICs 10th Anniversary event on 13 December 2013.
More than 40 Gwatts of new electrical energy installations were completed in Europe in 2011. Photovoltaic power was the leading product. Renewables account for 67% of the total mix.
In terms of production, inventories at the end of 2011 amounted to less than 1 month. Our figure of merit, (the ratio of total sector revenues to installed PV generation capacity) for 2011 improved significantly to US$3.53 per watt by 24% compared to US$4.6 per watt in 2010. PV production volume is now dominated by manufacturing in Asia where China and Taiwan now account for about 74% of the world supply. Production by European companies declined sharply in 2011 to less that 6% of the global total. The EPIC Photovoltaic Report is is available to EPIC members as part of their membership benefits.

EPIC and the IBBT of Ghent University presented the Symposium on Energy Consumption of the Internet at ECOC 2012. The presentations and panel discussion quantified the energy footprint of different components of the network: local access, core networks, data centers and user equipment. Electrical power consumption is not directly proportional to the level of traffic. While traffic growth is increasing at the current time at about 40% per year, electrical power consumption is rising at a rate of about 9% per year, according to a study presented by Mario Pickavet of IBBT. Electrical power resources, however are increasing at a far smaller rate, about 3% per year. At the present time, the internet consumes about 5% of world electricity generation. Paolo Frankl, director of renewable energies at the International Energy Agency emphasised the need to develop new green energy sources in the electricity mix, noting that more photovoltaic power was installed in Europe in 2011 than from any other source. Presentations from systems provider Ericsson and network operator France Telecom described efforts to lower energy consumption through installation of systems that can be dynamically reconfigured, allowing some parts of the network to be shut down during lower traffic periods. Early retirement of legacy equipment will also accelerate reductions in consumption. Results from the Eu project TREND (http://www.fp7-trend.eu) showed that the electrical consumption of the core network is dependent on the level of traffic, and this would be the best place to implement such innovations. The access network power consumption, on the other hand is not as strongly affected by the level of traffic. Peter Vetter presented the Green Touch consortium which has been formed by AlcatelLucent to focus on energy-saving strategies.
During the panel discussion, it was learned that figures from energy consumption due to datacenter traffic are probably understated, because most of the available data predate the explosive growth in cloud-computing and video transmission. However, based on current trends, the power consumption of the internet should rise from 5% of total resources today to 8% of total electrical power generation by 2020.
