teachers were informative. Conference week is a valuable time for us each year as it is a way to coordinate our collective efforts to help educate our children and support the work that is taking place at school and at home. As we all can agree, learning doesnt stop when our children leave school, and we cannot express enough how thankful we are for your unwavering commitment to our childrens education. In an effort to ensure that parent-teacher conferences are meeting the needs of everyone involved, we are asking parents to give us some feedback by completing a short survey. Please use the link below to complete the survey. If you have multiple children who attend Canyon View, we would appreciate it if you completed a separate survey for each child.

Over the next two weeks, we have three exciting events happening around campus beginning with tonights Canyon Boo! This long-standing tradition kicks off at 6:00 p.m. and includes several fun and engaging activities ranging from trick-or-treating (6-7 p.m.), the Sonora Desert Museum's Spooky Animal Exhibit, and Mad Sciences Fire & Ice performance (7-8 p.m.) to name a few. Please read the flyer in this edition of Canyon Views for further details. On October 31st, we will be having our annual Halloween Parade out on the North Field. We will be starting the festivities promptly after morning announcements and students who are planning on dressing up should arrive at school dressed in their costumes. When selecting a costume for your child/children, please be sure that it is appropriate for school. Children are not permitted to wear face paint, bring dangerous items, or items that represent weapons or could be used in a way that could cause injury to other participants. We appreciate your support! On November 7th, we will be hosting CVs Science Fair Kick-Off Night from 6-7 p.m. in the MPR. This informational session will give students and parents insight regarding the scientific process and what it takes to create a quality science fair project. Students who participate in this project-based learning will experience first-hand the excitement and sense of accomplishment that comes with completing a science experiment from start to finish, regardless of the end result. Hands-on learning is an effective way to spark students natural sense of curiosity, and the impact could last a lifetime!
Finally, our 25th anniversary coin drive will end on Friday, November 2nd. The coins collected will be used to fund a school-wide tiling project to commemorate CVs 25th anniversary. Collection jars are in each classroom, and the children are very excited to get this project rolling! Thank you for supporting this special project! Have a wonderful weekend! Sincerely, Rob Henikman Principal

Notication of Pest Control State Law (House Bill 2135, Chapter 102) requires the school district to notify parents, legal guardians, and employees 48 hours prior to pest/weed control treatments. In accordance with these requirements, Essential Pest, vendor for pesticide treatment, will visit our school once month to inspect building exteriors, kitchen areas, and restrooms, and to perform pest control treatments of those areas, as required. Our current pest control program does not include pesticide applications inside classrooms. Such applications are performed only if infestation occurs. Essential Pest will treat Canyon View on the third Tuesday of each month. Additional information may be obtained from the Environmental Health and Safety Ofce at the district ofce at 299-6446.

Pursuant to A.R.S. 15-816 Catalina Foothills School District will begin its open enrollment procedures for the 2013-2014 school year effective December 1, 2012. The law requires every Arizona school district to follow a prescribed procedure and timetable for admitting out-ofdistrict transfer students and resident transfer students (those who live in the District but are attending a school outside the attendance area of their residence). All students who currently attend CFSD schools and reside in other districts, and all CFSD resident students who are attending a different school than they would based on their residence, are impacted by this law. We require that all open enrollment students apply for admission each year. Therefore, if your child is a resident transfer (open enrollment) student and you want him/her to continue in that capacity, or if your child resides outside of the district and you want him/her to continue to attend a CFSD school next year, please complete an application form between
December 1, 2012, and February 28, 2013. applications and information regarding the application process are on the district web site, www.cfsd16.org (as of December 1, 2012), or
Open Enrollment at the district office Monday through Friday, 7:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. The district office is located at: Catalina Foothills School District J. W. Murphey Administration Center 2101 E. River Road Tucson, AZ 85718 (520) 209-7537 Applications will be available as of December 1, 2012, and may be completed on line (www.cfsd16.org), or submitted in person at the district office. Electronic applications must be submitted no later than February 28, 2013, and hard copies by 4:00 p.m. February 28, 2013. Decisions about admission, based on capacity, will be made by April l, 2013. At that time, all applicants will be notified whether their applications have been accepted, wait listed, or declined.
DISTRICT DIRECTORIES ARE HERE! By now, you should have received your CFSD District Directory that you purchased at the beginning of the school year. Hard copies of the books were distributed at all the schools during the week of October 15th; online directory access was delivered during that same time frame. If you have not gotten your hard copy of the directory, please check with your students to make sure it isn't sitting in his/her backpack. If you think you ordered a directory but didn't get it, please contact Eileen Jackson at 299-3828 or cfhsdirectorycommittee@gmail.com. Finally, we have 30 extra copies of the directory for sale at our high school front office. Hard copies are $12 each; the combo online access/hard copy is priced at $15. Stop in any time during school hours to purchase a directory. Thank you for your support of this important fundraiser. CFHS FFO

October 18, 2012 Canyon View Elementary School 5725 N. Sabino Canyon Rd. Tucson, AZ. 85750 Dear Parent, Guardian: Your childs school day just got healthier! School lunches now include more fruits, vegetables, and whole grain-rich foods; only fat-free or low-fat milk; right-size meals with portions designed for a childs age; and less saturated fat, trans fat and sodium. The changes in school meals, the first in 15 years, are based on the latest nutritional guidelines. Here are some important facts about the new school meals: The new school lunch provides 1/3 of the average daily calorie needs for kids by age. Some highly active students, like athletes, may need more calories. Some schools may offer second helpings of fruits and vegetables. A second carton of milk may also be an option. Students and/or sports teams can also bring food from home. In practice, many students are being served the same amounts of protein as before under the new standards.
Your child can learn good habits for life by making healthy food choices and getting proper exercise now. This year is a transition year as schools implement these new standards and work together with parents, to ensure that every child, in every community across America, has access to healthy and nutritious meals. Encourage them to try new foods and eat the healthy food offered. Reinforce healthy eating by offering similar new foods at home. Keep updated on the changes at www.fns.usda.gov/healthierschoolday.
