A sample of 4 items is selected at random from a box containing 12 items of which 5 are defective. Find the expected number E of defective items. Find the mean and s.d of sampling distribution of variances (S.D.V) for the population 2, 3, 4, 5 by drawing samples of size two With replacement. Without replacement. If x1, x2,,xn be e random sample drawn from a given population with mean and variance 2 . Show that sample mean x is an unbiased estimator of the population mean and E( x ) = . What is the size of the smallest sample required to estimate an unknown proportion within a maximum error of 0.06 with at least 95% confidence? Suppose that we want to investigate whether on average mean earn more 20% per week more than women in a certain industry. If the sample data shows that 60 men earn on average x1 = 292.50 per week with S.D of 18.20. What can we conclude at (b) the 0.01 level of significance? A trucking firm suspects the claim that the average life time of certain tires is at least 28,000 miles. To check the claim the puts 40 of these tires on its trucks and gets a mean life time of 27463 miles with S.D. of 1348 miles. What can it conclude if the probability of the type I error is to be at most 0.01? Contd. in Page 2

What are the properties of the t-distribution? A company wanted to introduce a new plan of work and a survey was conducted for this purpose. Out of sample of 500 workers in one group 62% favoured the new plan and another group of sample of 400 workers 41% were against the new plan. Is there any significant difference between the groups in their attitude towards the new plan at 5% level of significance? A one person barber has 6 chairs to accommodate people waiting for hair cut. Assume that customers who arrive when all the 6 chairs are full leave without entering the shop. Customers arrive at the average rate of 3 per hour and spend an average of 15 min. for the service. Find (i) The probability that a customer can get directly into the barber chair up on arrival? (ii) Expected number of customers waiting for a haircut? (iii) Effective arrival rate? (iv) The time a customer can expect to spend in the barber shop?
