Grounding
TO: Hi 1t i
ThiS tool should be grounded while In use to protect the operator from electric shock.
The tool is equipped with an approved three-conductor cord and three-prong grounding-
type plug to fit the proper grounding-type receptable (figure A) green (or green and yel-
low) conductor in the cord is the grounding wire. Never connect the green (or green
and yellow) wire to a live terminal.
An adapter (figure B) is available for connecting the plug to a two prong receptable.

10
Use only three-wire extension cords which have three-prong grounding-type plugs and
three-pole receptacles which accept the tool's plug.
Use an extension cord heavy enough to carry the current your tool will draw. An under-
si2:ed cord will cause a drop In voltage. resulting in loss of power and overheating. The
following table shows the correct size to use depending on cord length:
Cord length
up to 100 fl.
up to 150 ft.
up to 250 ft.
up to 375 ft.
It in doubt, use the next heavier gauge.
Note: The smaller the gauge number, the heavier the cord.
Repair or replace damaged cords.
See your Hilti Salesman for extension cords.

1. Power Source:
Before connecting your TE 17 to an outlet,
Insure that the power supply is '15 volts AC.
60 Hz,
2. Side Handle and Depth Gauge Adjustment;
Loosen the side handle by turning counter-
clockwise. Adjust the depth gauge to the pro-
per length and rotate the handle to the most
comfortable position. Retighten the side
handle,
Note: When satting depth gauge be sure that
the drill bit is pushed back to insure correct
setting.

3. Chuck Lubrication:
Always clean and lubricate the chuck end of
the bit shank before inserting In the drill. To
lubricate, insert the shank Into the end of the
side handle and wipe Off excess grease.
Note:
Care should be taken to ensure that the entire
surface of the connection end Is covered with
a thin film of grease.
4. Bit Chucking
Pull the locking sleeve back and insert the bit
in the chuck. Release the locking sleeve and
turn the drill bit until the locking sleeve snaps

5, For hammer drilling:
With the drill stopped, pull back the adjusting
sleeve all the way and lock by twisting a quar-
ter turn counter clockwise. Place the drill
aga.lnst the work eurtece. apply light pressure,
switch the drill on.
Note:
If the machine is switched on before being
placed in position, no hammering will occur.
6. For rotary drilling:
With the drill stopped, unlock the adjusting
sleeve with a quarter turn clockwlse. A spring
will push it forward all the way. Turn the ad-
justing sleeve a quarter turn counter clockwise
to lock in the "drilling only" position. Place the
drill against the work surface and switch on,

Maintenance of bits
Because of the operating principle of the TE 17,
excess operator pressure is not needed. To
ensure long bit life, never force the bit Or let it
overheat. Sharp bits perform better than dull
ones. Resharpen bite as frequently as needed.
The diagram illustrates a typical sign of wear.
only in accordance with instructions.
Tips on re-sharpening of carbide tipped blt$:
Re-sharpening can be accomplished with a nor-
mal grinding wheel to the angles indicated in
the accompanying diagram. A good grade of sill-
COn carbide grinding wheel, hardness H to J,
grit slze 80 should be used. It is best to use a
commercially available, adjustable-anqle drill
bit holder. Short back and forth movements of
the tool will produce a good ground finish with
liltle heating effect. Carbide cutting edges must
never be cooled in water.
For range of drill bits, anchors
and anchor setting tools,
see selector chart in your tool box.
