With summer approaching, I wanted to take this opportunity to offer a few friendly reminders that pertain to situations that frequently occur during this season. Laws: The Massachusetts motor vehicle laws are still in effect, even during the summer! You should have enough seatbelts for each passenger in your vehicle. While it may seem fun to take a drive around the lake with a pickup truck bed or a Jeep full of kids piled on top of one another, these can be dangerous situations. You also need to remember that just because you think that you will drive safely while you have this pickup truck full of kids, not everyone else on the road is driving as safely as you are. There has been an increase in distracted driving, and alcohol can also be a factor as the summer season approaches. Also, I wanted to point out that anything that is not registered to be on the road should not be travelling on the road. Please remember, too, to drive slowly, as there are many more children, pets, etc. that are walking and biking on the roadways at this time. Trespassing: People are reminded that they should not be trespassing on private property. We get numerous calls during the summer months about people picnicking, fishing, and swimming from private docks. Please respect the property of others, and remember that if you are a town resident or taxpayer you can purchase a Town beach sticker for the bargain price of $5 (for beach sticker only). If you are not a town resident or taxpayer, you can head to Tolland State Forest, which has a day use beach area. Noise: Please remember that even though may be on vacation and having a great time, your neighbor could be the one that is trying to get a young baby to sleep, or the one who has to get up in a few hours to go to work. Lets try to keep music and other noise to a manageable level, and respect the rights of others. Thank you very much for your continued support of our police department, and if we can be of assistance to you, please feel free to contact us at 413-269-0100,(press 6). If we are not in the office, and you need us right away, please call 413-442-0512 (Berkshire County Sheriffs Control). If you have an emergency, please call 911.

Patriots of the American Revolution The "Great Road " aka "Knox Trail " Lives On
The significance and momentum is building and gaining some National recognition , When Knox Trekkers from the Patriots of the American Revolution Magazine of Ohio passed through Monterey, Sandisfield, Otis on April 15, 2012 and expected to be in Boston on April 21, 2012. An Otis Historical Commission member guided the Patriots Benjamin Smith and Alex Culpepper through the Hideous, Howling, Wilderness and the worst of road of some 5 miles . In one area of newly discovered portion of the trail there was even some bush whacking. Carrying only what they survive on strapped to their backs found good people along the way so far. They noted that the highlight of the walk has been the amount of History of the Trail-Road through the Otis and Sandisfield. Their guide explained the origin of the trail-road from the 1650's as a fur traders route to Albany. Then used as the main road to Sheffield Ma. then 18th Century War Road. Their guide pointed landmarks known on the 1764 survey such as Abiel's rock ,Punch Bowl Brook and Tavern's along the way. The tour ended at the jewel of Trail- Roadway the 65 mile to Albany milestone in East Otis

June is national Perennial Garden Month and national Fruits and Veggies Month. Cool. I didnt know that until today. I love my gardens, but I know its a lot of back breaking work. Many of the Boomers that I know suffer from chronic back, neck or shoulder pain all summer, from spending theirs days working in their yards and gardens. Thats not good for our bodies, spirits or brains. Did you know that chronic pain can shrink your brains grey matter? Grey matter is in charge of memory and information processing. In normal aging, the brain loses about 0.5 percent of gray matter a year, however, when chronic pain is involved, as much as 11 percent is lost in a year!1 Yikes! Some scientists believe this large decrease in grey matter may be due to the fact that chronic pain forces nerve cells to work overtime. In testing done by Drs. Bruce D. Dick and Saifudin Rashiq at the Multidisciplinary Pain Centre at the University of Alberta, Canada, two-thirds of participants who suffered chronic pain had a difficult time paying attention and remembering simple facts. Participants in the study were given computerized memory tests, along with a neuropsychological test of attention, on what were identified as "pain" days and "less pain" days. Scientists compared 26 healthy participants with 26 patients who had been suffering with chronic pain for more than a year. Those with chronic pain had the largest decrease in gray matter. The researchers also discovered that those who had suffered with the chronic pain the longest, also sustained more grey matter loss. Sixty Seven per cent of the participants showed signs of cognitive impairment on their pain testing day. Although the sample of participants was small, the findings were statistically significant, according to Dick and Rashiq .2 In another study, researchers from Northwestern University found that chronic pain, which is defined as pain lasting six months or longer, caused significant and long-lasting damage to the brain, aging it up to 20 times faster than normal. In this study, the researchers measured grey matter density in three locations in the brain and compared healthy participants to those with chronic pain. They discovered that the chronic pain sufferers yearly grey matter loss was equivalent to 10-20 years of normal aging.1 These are not good odds if you are a chronic pain sufferer!

This makes it even more important that we find the reason for our chronic back, neck and shoulder, hip, or knee pain and resolve it right away! The best way to discover the source of the pain, and to find solutions to keep it from coming back, is to have a personal plan designed for you by a coach or therapist who examines your walk, looks at your office set-up, assesses how much stress you have in your life, and looks at your physical activities like biking, running, etc. In the meantime, if youve been out in the garden all day, here are two of my best recommendations for relieving todays pain. Relax those muscles right now! Heres how. Sit on the floor next to your couch or a chair. Then, lie down on your back, placing your buttocks right against the couch or chair so that your thighs are perpendicular to the floor and your lower legs are resting comfortably on the furniture. Now breathe Continue breathing deeply for about five minutes. In this position, your back is in a completely neutral position. The natural curve in your lower spine is intact and can rest, and all of the muscles in your back join in for some much needed R&R. Ahhhh a lovely vacation for your back! Take fish oil supplements. According to the American Chiropractic Association, 90 percent of back problems are caused by inflammation. Fish oil is your best anti-inflammatory soldiers! As long as you are not on Cumadin or another blood thinner, you can take 2400 mg in the morning and again in the evening. Make sure you talk with your doctor first as other medications may react with fish oil. Best of Health, Kathi

Last Sunday (May 20, 2012) great weather and good causes combined to make the Berkshire Trail Riders Associations 8th annual Berkshire Big Adventure ride an outstanding success. Over 150 riders from 7 states and Canada gathered for a weekend in the Berkshires with informal riding and socializing on Saturday, and the featured organized 128 mile tour on Sunday. This years ride started and finished at Otis Ridge ski area and was a figure 8 route through 15 towns with a midstation stop at Sangars Store in Windsor. Unlike better known charity rides that feature a large pack of loud motorcycles (usually Harley -Davidsons) in a slow-moving parade group, the BBA does not welcome loud bikes. Our most frequent makes are BMW and KTM adventure motorcycles capable of dualsport mixed surface operation. The BBA is put on in rally style where each participant is given the suggested route, and small groups navigate at their own pace. The BBA route is entirely on public roads and seeks as many dirt and gravel roads as possible. Additional uninhabited and unmaintained public roads, many of which are in extremely poor condition, are suggested as optional Hero Sections where getting a 600 lb. BMW stuck in the mud is part of the fun. The club reshuffles the route every year to minimizing riding past the same houses all the time. Every year the majority of the funds raised by the BBA ride are donated. Prior beneficiaries have been Ronald McDonald House and local Emergency Services in the towns where the BTRA most frequently rides. This years primary charity is Hospice Care in the Berkshires, selected by BTRA member and pancreatic cancer patient Vincent Lee, for whom this years ride was named. (Secondary beneficiaries will again be donations or grants to local emergency services.) Lee explains I was diagnosed with advanced pancreatic cancer in April 2010. This diagnosis has 95% mortality within 24 months, but its already been more than 2 years, and Im not dead yet. So this years ride was called Vinces Im Not Dead Yet Ride. Lee selected Hospice as hed already been referred to them when he took a bad turn, but then re-stabilized and declined the referral. He says I expect to need them sometime, but not yet. Friends & family often donate to Hospice in someones memory after theyve died. Id rather give them the check myself, while Im alive.

MASTER
Master Planning allows the homeowner to look at the big picture when developing a vision for their landscape and helps them make important site decisions. A Master Plan is a drawing that is developed through meetings with the client, site visits, and careful analysis of the property. Typically, it is a long term plan, and it is never too late to begin. Organizing long term and short term goals for a property ensures a well thought out landscape instead of haphazard elements and outdoor spaces that are disconnected to the land, architecture and each other. Since our founding in 1990 we have completed over 400 master plans for various residential, public/urban parklands and commercial clients. Many of our clients continue to update their master plans through the years. Our approach to master planning includes an initial interview with our client, so that we can understand their lifestyle: family, interests (hobbies, exercise routines, leisure time) and how they will use their home (year round or seasonal). We like to see the style of dcor they prefer for their home because often it translates into the landscape. We really need to understand their personality in order to create a landscape that they would enjoy. We then walk the land with the client no matter the size, whether it is an in-town home or a 350-acre mountain retreat with deep woodlands and fields. We want to know what part of the land touches their heart, what is that special place that allows them to daydream, sit quietly or play loudly. All of this information guides us when developing their dream environment.
30 ~~ June, 2012 ~ Otis Gazette ~ www.OtisGazette.com 123rd Edition
PLA NNING
W e also gather information about their existing or proposed house. If they have an Architect, we will meet with them to understand the house design so that we can incorporate current and future architectural elements when developing the master plan. The local and state laws and regulations play a role in how the land can ultimately be used, so these also require understanding. With all of the information we gather we create a master plan that is functional for day to day life. Elements are shown on the plan such as, vehicular approach to the house, front door entry gardens, terraces and walls, patios and decks, swimming pool, hot tub, play areas, and landscape beds, among others. As Landscape Architects, we also want it to be inspiring for the homeowner, a place where they can relax in a woodland outdoor room or sun by their new pool. Creating a master plan is not a linear process. Every meeting we learn something new about the client, every site visit we learn more about the land; the work is not finished until the plan is constructed. Master Planning helps turn dreams into reality.

I thought you might enjoy seeing a few pictures of our Mothers Day visitor: a bald eagle. We live on the Reservoir in Southwest Bay on Kibbe Point. The eagle swooped in over our deck and landed on the tree immediately next to our home. A beautiful sight. It was somewhere between 2 and 3 feet tallvery majestic. Enjoy. Best wishes for continued success with the This Spot O t i s Could be Yours Gazette. Jim Wall, Next Month East Otis, Only $25 MA
