Grade: Six Unit: Ancient Cultures Unit Narrative Overarching Essential Question(s) Topical Essential Questions Power Standards:

Centralization of authority: Middle Ages How have achievements of ancient cultures impacted us today and what are the implications for the future? How do societies organize themselves? PS#1 Inquiry - Students investigate the causes and effects of societal issues (past and present) by designing and communicating
research, using evidence and data to make interpretations, and applying findings to generalize understanding of societies and public issue, and the implications for the future.

PS#2 History - Students analyze the influences of the past on the present, and their implication for the future by understanding and
interpreting periods of conflict, change, and continuity in history.

PS#4 Civics, Government, and Society - Students examine the democratic principle to compare and contrast different types
of governments, debate the rights and obligations of citizenship within them, and evaluate the concept of human rights and responsibilities within those institutions from local, national, and global perspectives in various times.

PS#5 Economics - Students recognize and analyze the relationships among the needs and wants of individuals, societies, and

governments, and identify and evaluate the economic and environmental factors that influence choices and decisions while accounting for the availability of resources.

Power Indicators

Examine multiple perspectives, (attitudes, values, and behaviors) or people in ancient civilizations and compare them to current perspectives in the world. Explain how the roles and status of people impacted their rights in their cultures. Identify basic economic concepts within an ancient culture: supply and demand, human and natural resources, taxation, currency, trade, and bartering system. Analyze the resources within ancient cultures and give examples of how they influence the goods and services of those cultures describing their importance and impact.

Make predictions about the future of the U.S. or the world based on understanding of past and present. (i.e, banking systems, borders, overuse of resources) Describe an ancient culture in terms of the 5 themes of geography. (movement, human interactions, regions, locations- exact location, place describing the area) Identify and locate major mountain ranges, bodies of water, cities, and climate and vegetation zones in an ancient civilization. Use basic elements of a map including latitude, longitude, and scale to read a variety of representations of the earth. Identify patterns of voluntary and involuntary migrations in ancient civilizations and the world. Investigate and give evidence of expressions (languages, customs, beliefs, traditions, etc.) of ancient cultures of the world and describe the contributions of various cultural groups to the world, past, and present.
