Getting Started
Why SQL Server?
SQL Server is a Relational Database Management System, or RDBMS, that allows for the collection of
data and facilitates the transformation of that data into information. Alone, a collection of contacts in
an address book would simply serve as a useful tool in managing contacts, and contacts alone. A large
file cabinet could be used to store and organize invoices, but would take up tremendous hours to sort
and manage. Even more modern table applications like Excel limited by their capabilities. SQL Server
allows for meaningful, quick, and powerful data manipulations that can empower a growing business
with competitive knowledge to gain an edge over their competition.

Starting the Application

Once SQL Server has been installed at a workstation, you can begin to access your application by clicking
on the Start Menu, then All Programs, then Microsoft SQL Server 2008 R2, and then SQL Server
Management Studio.
