Statistical data analysis of the UIU students

1.1. Introduction:
1.1.1. Statement of the Problem Statistics is a general term used to summarize a process that an analyst, mathematician or statistician can use to characterize a data set. If the data set is based on a sample of a larger population, then the analyst can extend inferences onto the population based on the statistical results from the sample. Statistical tools not only summarize past data through such indicators as the mean (mean, median, and mode) and the standard deviation but can predict future events using frequency distribution functions. Statistics provides ways to design efficient experiments that eliminate time-consuming trial and error. Double-blind tests for polls, intelligence and aptitude tests, and medical, biological, and industrial experiments all benefit from statistical methods and theories. The results of all of them serve as predictors of future performance, though reliability varies. Estimation; hypothesis testing; least squares method; probability theory; regression. This term paper focuses on the statistical analysis of the UIU students who are in different school, based on their past academic result specially in SSC &HSC, current academic result in UIU (Last three semester CGPAs), age, average hours of study per week, schooling at Dhaka or outside. The study also interpret the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats of UIU and an opinion survey on faculty, academics, extracurricular factors and physical support and services. Information is collected from primary sources by asking a set of questions to 90 students in each department of BBA, MBA and Engineering. 1.1.2. Regression Analysis In statistics, regression analysis includes many techniques for modeling and analyzing several variables, when the focus is on the relationship between a dependent variable and one or more independent variables. More specifically, regression analysis helps one understand how the typical value of the dependent variable changes when any one of the independent variables is varied, while the other independent variables are held fixed. Regression analysis is widely used for prediction and forecasting. Linear regression In linear regression, the model specification is that the dependent variable, is a linear combination of the parameters (but need not be linear in the independent variables). For example, in simple linear regression for modeling data points there is one independent variable: , and two parameters, and :

straight line: The residual, , is the difference between the value of the dependent variable

predicted by the model, and the true value of the dependent variable . One method of estimation is ordinary least squares. This method obtains parameter estimates that minimize the sum of squared residuals, SSE, also sometimes denoted RSS:

Statistical data analysis of the UIU students

Minimization of this function results in a set of normal equations, a set of simultaneous linear equations in the parameters, which are solved to yield the parameter estimators, In the case of simple regression, the formulas for the least squares estimates are .

where is the mean (average) of the values and is the mean of the values. See simple linear regression for a derivation of these formulas and a numerical example. Under the assumption that the population error term has a constant variance, the estimate of that variance is given by:

This is called the mean square error (MSE) of the regression. The standard errors of the parameter estimates are given by

Under the further assumption that the population error term is normally distributed, the researcher can use these estimated standard errors to create confidence intervals and conduct hypothesis tests about the population parameters. General linear model In the more general multiple regression model, there are p independent variables:

where xij is the ith observation on the jth independent variable, and where the first independent variable takes the value 1 for all i (so is the regression intercept).

The least squares parameter estimates are obtained from p normal equations. The residual can be written as

The normal equations are

Coefficient of determination In statistics, the coefficient of determination R2 is used in the context of statistical models whose main purpose is the prediction of future outcomes on the basis of other related information. It is the proportion of variability in a data set that is accounted for by the statistical model. It provides a measure of how well future outcomes are likely to be predicted by the model. A data set has values yi, each of which has an associated modelled value fi (also sometimes referred to as i). Here, the values yi are called the observed values and the modelled values fi are sometimes called the predicted values. The "variability" of the data set is measured through different sums of squares:

the total sum of squares (proportional to the sample variance); the regression sum of squares, also called the explained sum of squares. , the sum of squares of residuals, also called the residual sum of squares. Adjusted R2 Adjusted R2 (often written as and pronounced "R bar squared") is a modification due to Theil of R2 that adjusts for the number of explanatory terms in a model. Unlike R2, the adjusted R2 increases only if the new term improves the model more than would be expected by chance. The adjusted R2 can be negative, and will always be less than or equal to R2. The adjusted R2 is defined as

where p is the total number of regressors in the linear model (but not counting the constant term), n is the sample size, dft is the degrees of freedom n 1 of the estimate of the population variance of the dependent variable, and dfe is the degrees of freedom n p 1 of the estimate of the underlying population error variance.

Statistical data analysis of the UIU students

The principle behind the Adjusted R2 statistic can be seen by rewriting the ordinary R2 as

where and are estimates of the variances of the errors and of the observations, respectively. These estimates are replaced by statistically unbiased versions: . and

Adjusted R2 does not have the same interpretation as R2. As such, care must be taken in interpreting and reporting this statistic. Adjusted R2 is particularly useful in the feature selection stage of model building. The use of an adjusted R2 is an attempt to take account of the phenomenon of statistical shrinkage.

1.1.3. SWOT Analysis

Is a planning tool used to understand the Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, and Threats involved in a project or in a business. It involves specifying the objective of the business or project and identifying the internal and external factors that are supportive or unfavorable to achieving that objective. SWOT is often used as part of a strategic planning process. SWOT or TOWS is an acronym for Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, Threats. Strengths Positive tangible and intangible attributes, internal to an organization. They are within the organizations control. Weakness Factors that are within an organizations control that detract from its ability to attain the desired goal. Which areas might the organization improve? Opportunities External attractive factors that represent the reason for an organization to exist and develop. What opportunities exist in the environment, which will propel the organization? Identify them by their time frames Threats External factors, beyond an organizations control, which could place the organization mission or operation at risk. The organization may benefit by having contingency plans to address them if they should occur. Classify them by their seriousness and probability of occurrence.

Objective of the Report

The Objectives of this analysis and preparing report are given bellow: Analyzing the Strengths, weakness, opportunities and threats To get opinion on faculty, academics extracurricular factors and physical support and services from the UIU students. To learn about how to calculate all the data in MS Excel. To know how to find out all the functions (Count, Average, Percentage, Regression analysis etc.) by using Excel. To gain practical knowledge about survey

1.3 Methodology
For preparing the report, data are collected by taking interview of 90 students from UIU campus. We use simple random sampling method for this survey.By taking the Help of Microsoft excel , we calculate those variables. The following sequential steps are followed in the study may be described under the following section: 1. Selection of students: At first we select 90 students (30 from BBA, 30 from BSC,30from MBA faculty) from UIU campus. 2. Collectect Data By the help of questionnaire: We provide questionnaire to the students of three faculties. The fill up all the questions and return to us. Thus we collect primary data from them. 3. Calculating the data: After collecting the primary data we calculate the variables by the help of Microsoft excel software to calculate the Multiple regression Analysis, SWOT analysis, Averages for Opinion survey on faculty and academics ,extracurricular factors and physical support and services.. 4. Analyze the data: After calculating the data we analyze the data and give recommendation.

Limitation of the Study

Despite of our effort to the highest level, we had some limitations in study of the report. They are Students were very busy because of their class schedule and examination. They were unwilling to give information. Some students prefer average ranking. Due to lack of time, we cant do proper justice with this report. Some unavoidable conditions hamper in time of preparing this report

4.1. Recommendation for UIU authority After finishing this report we have some recommendation for the authority of UIU. Our report reveals that most of the students who got a good GPA in S.S.C and H.S.C. cant maintain consistency in their result. But they get weaver on the basis of their previous result. On the other hand, Students are facing accommodation problem in study room and Computer lab. They need adequate

physical support structures such as library, lab, and sports facilities. They require active alumni association. Club activities should be increased. The quality of the campus food should be developed and the price should be reasonable. UIU can start faculty and student exchange program with foreign universities. It can collaborate with foreign universities as regards academic and research matters. The performance of Director's office should be developed. It needs more advertising and links with the other organizations.
