The team is flying out as part of disaster response group Humanity First Medical, a branch of aid agency Humanity First. They were expected to leave London this morning. Mr Diyar, 42, a trauma care instructor with the county fire service, has previously helped during the 2003 Turkish and the 2001 Indian earthquakes. He said nothing could prepare people for the level of devastation. "On the television, you get a two-dimensional picture of what the camera sees. "When you land you've got a 360-degree view of disaster, along with the sounds and the smells," he said. He expects to have to help deal with people with fractures, infected wounds and limbs needing amputation. "It may be drastic surgery but it is life saving," he said. Based either in the Haitian capital, Port-au-Prince, or at an emergency medical centre near the border with the Dominican Republic, the team will be self-sufficient, taking medicine, food and water. Mr Bryers and Mr Diyar will work with doctors from the US and Canada under the direction of the United Nations. An estimated 250,000 victims are in need of urgent medical aid. The death toll is expected to reach 200,000. Father-of-two Mr Bryers, 46, a trauma care co-ordinator in the training and development department of the county fire service, said he was eager to get on with the job. "We have trained for years and we want to get out there and do what we can," he said. "We realise we can't solve everything or help everyone, but we will give our best to as many people as possible." He added: "Safety is paramount. The bottom line is if we get there and find it is unsafe, we may have to pull out. "We can only deliver the help if we are safe." Dr Nadeem Afzal, of Humanity First Medical, said: "We are sending a team of highly experienced medical staff to help support aid efforts and bolster the emergency healthcare the people of Haiti need so badly. "Our team will link with colleagues from Canada and the US and immediately begin offering help."
