TRUE LIFE IN GOD

I am the Bread of Life!

When faced with serious material and physical problems, we instinctively turn to God to complain, to seek help, to plead, to bargain, or to seek pardon and mercy. In our short-sightedness we often fail to realize that many times, we are much too concerned about material things and have all but forgotten our spiritual needs. This is one of the reasons why St. Paul today admonishes us to shed off the old self and to put on the new self the person whose priorities are determined by the values of the Kingdom. Jesus, in the Gospel, teaches us to set our hearts not on material food, but on the food that gives eternal life. Today as we celebrate Parish Priests Sunday, we are also invited to grow in the appreciation of all the good that parish priests do for their flocks. Let us take this opportunity to show our gratitude to our parish priest and his assistants for being instruments of Gods care for us. Let us pray that they may be inspired by their patron saint, John Mary Vianney. In our Gospel, the Lord gave manna, the bread from heaven, to the Israelites as they traveled through the desert. To those who believe in him, Jesus promises the true bread from heaven, the Bread of Life, that is himself.
A proclamation from the holy Gospel according to St. John (Jn 6:24-35). Glory to you O Lord.

him, What sign can you do, that we may see and believe in you? What can you do? Our ancestors ate manna in the desert, as it is written: He gave them bread from heaven to eat. So Jesus said to them, Amen, amen, I say to you, it was not Moses who gave the bread from heaven. My Father gives you the true bread from heaven. For the bread of God is that which comes down from heaven and gives life to the world. So they said to him, Sir, give us this bread always. Jesus said to them, I am the bread of life. Whoever comes to me will never hunger, and whoever believes in me will never thirst.
The Gospel of the Lord. Praise to you Lord Jesus Christ.

#2835. This petition, with the responsibility it involves, also applies to another hunger from which men are perishing: Man does not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceeds from the mouth of God, that is, by the Word he speaks and the Spirit he breathes forth. Christians must make every effort to proclaim the good news to the poor. There is a famine on earth, not a famine of bread, nor a thirst for water, but of hearing the words of the LORD. For this reason the specifically Christian sense of this fourth petition concerns the Bread of Life: The Word of God accepted in faith, the Body of Christ received in the Eucharist. #2836. This day is also an expression of trust taught us by the Lord, which we would never have presumed to invent. Since it refers above all to his Word and to the Body of his Son, this today is not only that of our mortal time, but also the "today" of God. If you receive the bread each day, each day is today for you. If Christ is yours today, he rises for you every day. How can this be? You are my Son, today I have begotten you. Therefore, today is when Christ rises.

When the crowd saw that neither Jesus nor his disciples were there, they themselves got into boats and came to Capernaum looking for Jesus. And when they found him across the sea they said to him, Rabbi, when did you get here? Jesus answered them and said, Amen, amen, I say to you, you are looking for me not because you saw signs but because you ate the loaves and were filled. Do not work for food that perishes but for the food that endures for eternal life, which the Son of Man will give you. For on him the Father, God, has set his seal. So they said to him, What can we do to accomplish the works of God? Jesus answered and said to them, This is the work of God, that you believe in the one he sent. So they said to

#2837. Daily (epiousios) occurs nowhere else in the New Testament. Taken in a temporal sense, this word is a pedagogical repetition of this day, to confirm us in trust "without reservation." Taken in the qualitative sense, it signifies what is necessary for life, and more broadly every good thing sufficient for subsistence. Taken literally (epi-ousios: superessential), it refers directly to the Bread of Life, the Body of Christ, the medicine of immortality, without which we have no life within us. Finally in this connection, its heavenly meaning is evident: this day is the Day of the Lord, the day of the feast of the kingdom, anticipated in the Eucharist that is already the foretaste of the kingdom to come. For this reason it is fitting for the Eucharistic liturgy to be celebrated each day. The Eucharist is our daily bread. The power belonging to this divine food makes it a bond of union. Its effect is then understood as unity, so that, gathered into his Body and made members of him, we may become what we receive. This also is our daily bread: the readings you hear each day in church and the hymns you hear and sing. All these are necessities for our pilgrimage. The Father in heaven urges us, as children of heaven, to ask for the bread of heaven. [Christ] himself is the bread who, sown in the Virgin, raised up in the flesh, kneaded in the Passion, baked in the oven of the tomb, reserved in churches, brought to altars, furnishes the faithful each day with food from heaven.

I will keep My promise and they will see My Throne one day; I had sworn on My Holiness to keep them secure in My Heart and so I will ....
