Chapter - 1 Graha Samaya Cheshta

Desired Planet : Jupiter Number of the sign in which the desired planet is standing = 2 Jupiter is standing in Taurus in Rasi Chakra. Planetary Number = 5 Number of years of Major Period for Jupiter = 16 2 sign in which planets is standing x 5 planetary number = 10; since 10 is not divisible by 27, it is multiplied by 16 Jupiter's Major Period Years. 16 x 10 = 160 divided by 27 = 5-25/27 OR 25th Cheshta is indicated. 25 x 16 = 400 divided by 6 = 66-4/6 OR 4th sub-cheshta Method II Jupiter has traversed 32 degrees from Aries. The status of Ascendant is taken-up by Moon as stated in that book. Moon has traversed 146 degrees from Aries. In this method, the degree occupied by the Ascendant has to be deducted from the degree occupied by the planet. Therefore, 360+32 = 392 - 146 = 246 divided by 27 = 9 - 3/27 or 3rd cheshta 3 x 16 = 48 divided by 6 = nil balance which means 6 or 6th sub-cheshta. Under Method I, we get 25th cheshta Sambhoga and under Method II the cheshta obtained was " Applying CasteMark on Forehead" and the sub-cheshta "discarding the mirror". Discarding the mirror is an act done only after one is fully satisfied with one's dressing. Broadly speaking, the cheshtas under both the methods indicate that the native will achieve all his ambitions and cherished desires during Jupiter's Major Period. ***45 years down the line, we can look back at it and realise the truth ---Publisher It may look, for many of whom, who do not have implicit faith in Astrology that the method enunciated above is but crude or antiquated way of deciding upon the goodness of a major period, for the exact quantum/nature of major period have not been defined in precise terms. Further, a student has been asked to use his intelligence on the Main and sub-Cheshta occuring and find out the effects of the Major Period. Yet, in the last sloka to this chapter, the famous author if this methodology, Shri Prabhakara Daivagna asserts that this method has the full sanction of astrological giants like Narada. There's no doubt that this forms part of the Secrets of Hindu Astrology.

14 Missing links of Hindu Astrology

In the Major Period of Lord of 12th & in the sub-period of malefics

Loss of position; mental agony; loss of everything.

If the Lords of Major Period and the sub-period are friends between themselves and/or standing in quadrants/trines of each other, the sub-period will yield fruitful results. If they happen to be enemies and/or standing in 6, 8 or 12th, malefic results flow.

Generally speaking, the Major Period of Lord Ascendant is considered broadly benefic. So also, the Major Period of Lord of the Moon sign, and the Major Period operating at the time of birth. For predicting the Major Period effects, treat the sign occupied by lord of the major period as the Ascendant for the time being, and see what planets occupy the 12 houses therefrom and shape your predictions accordingly. A strong benefic in 10th si bound to improve profession, a strong benefic in 5th may award a son and a strong Venus in 7th of the lord of major period, may cause the native's marriage. Effects arising as a result of lord of major period's relation with various Yogas shouldd also be taken into account. Major Period effects are also subject to the significations of the lord of the major period, the country in which the native may be living and the age/century in which the native thrives and whether the native is a boy/youth/adult. During the currency of a benefic's major period, a native in already prosperous circustances would be enjoying Raja Yoga or kingly life; for a native born in poverty, under identical circumstances, there may be birth of a son. Birth of a son in the good old days was considered to be the most auspicious. The author seems to throw a hint that the effect of a Raja Yoga held by a major period lord would result in the birth of son during such major period for a native in ordinary circumstances and that the same Yoga would confer Raja Yoga and Raja Bhoga for one already in affluent circumstances. Death has to be considered in the sub-periods of lords of 2nd and 7th in the major period of lord of 8th; more so, if lord of 8th is a malefic. The major periods of lords of 8th and 12th are malefic; more so, if the 8th/12th is also occupied by a malefic. In such major periods, the sub-periods of lords of 2nd/7th cause death of a native. The malefic effects concerning the 6th house will be suffered by the native during the major period of lord of 6th, if the 6th in birth chart is not occupied by lord of 6, 8 or 12. Death of mother and father has to be thought of in major periods of lords of 4th/9th respectively. If these major period lords are just nominally malefic, instead of death, there will be diseases, ailments, dissensions and losses.

15 Missing links of Hindu Astrology

Major Period effects should to be adjusted directly in proportion to the strength of the lord of a house. There will be changes in environments or death in the sub-period of a planet in the 6th/8th of lord of major period. Loss of luck and even life is possible in the major period or sub-period of lord of 12th in conjunction with a malefic. If lords of 6th and 7th are together in one sign, in their major periods, there will be loss of pleasure and increased number of enemies. In the major period or sub-period of the dispositor of Mars, if malefic, there will be loss of the effects of the house(s) owned by the dispositor of Mars. In the major of malefics in 6, 8 or 12, aspected also by malefic, there will be troubles of various sorts, including death. Major Period effects, as a whole, have to be delineated after taking into account all the benefic and malefic aspects, and Yogas with which the lord of major period may be connected with.

Chapter - 3 Angaraka Dosha

The detection of Angaraka Dosha in the horoscope of a would-be bridegroom or bride, is enough nowadays, to put off his/her marriage by several years; in some cases, the horoscope with this evil is not even considered by others, but thrown off as a hopeless case. In such cases, to shortcircuit spinsterhood for the girl, the parents sometimes, out of sheer disgust, declare that no horoscope exists and arrange marriage without consideration of horoscope. Even for boys with this or similar evil, the same process is followed. Many such marriages have taken place and there are cases of such couples carrying on normally, thus establishing, in some cases at least, that the seriousness attached to Kuja Dosha is unwarranted. It is not uncommon to come across advertisements seeking horoscopes of boys/girls with Kuja Dosha in 7th, 8th etc. with a view to pick-up a match with equally strong Kuja Dosha. Some have even searched thousands of horoscopes, extending over years, to find a suitable match with Kuja Dosha. From our personal contacts with astrologers and students in the field, we have been able to measure the importance attached by the public. to this evil and have also been witnessing cases of boys and girls remaining unmarried until well past their youth because of non-availability of suitable horoscope with this evil. We have therefore, come to the conclusion, that there is no correct appraisal of what constitutes Kuja Dosha and that unnecessary and unwarranted importance is being attached to it in a large number of cases, resulting in youth being wasted. Whilst everyone is conscious of this evil, it appears that the majority do not know precisely the extent of the Yoga, how the evil works and how it ultimately leads to premature death of the native or his partner. We have brooded over the question whether it is in God's purpose of creation to let some bachelors remain unmarried and thus deny the greatest enjoyment in life. How does Angaraka Dosha arise ? In practice, the presence of Mars in 7th/8th from Ascendant, in some cases, from Moon also, is all that is wanted to condemn a horoscope with Kuja Dosha but the sloka #s 108-109 above say that Kuja Dosha arises if Mars is found in Asdt/2/4/7/8/12 for boys and in 1/2/4/7/8/12 from Moon/Venus in a girl's horoscope, We personally do not subscribe to this view in full that the dosha arises from Asdt for boys and from Moon/Venus for girls, but we support the view of those Sages who say that this evil operates with full force from Asdt, 50% force from Moon and with 25% force from Venus without distinction of sex. Quantum of Angaraka Dosha The slokas referred to above merely say that the evil arises by virtue of stay of Mars in certain houses but not the quantum of evil in the different houses. Similarly, the quantum of evil which arises by reason of Mars staying in different signs of zodiac is also not given. The following Table in use in the Malayalam speaking areas of South gives clearcut idea of the quantum of this evil in different houses and signs and with what force, it operates from Asdt, Moon and Venus.

18 Missing links of Hindu Astrology

Mars standing in 1/2/4/7/8/12 constitutes what is called Kuja Dosha. Thus, the table is usable for both purposes.

The values given above are for calculation of the evil from Ascendant only.

While calculating with reference to Moon, the above values should be reduced to 50%. While calculating with reference to Venus, the above values should be reduced to 25%. How to assess Dosha Saamya

From the Ascendant, find out the values for all the malefics standing in the stated signs & total them-up A

From Moon, find out the values for all the malefics standing in the stated signs & total them up B reduced to 50%

From Venus, find out the values for all the malefics standing in the stated signs & total them up C reduced to 25%

Now, A+B+C = P P divided by 128 would give the exact quantum of dosha. Angaraka Dosha is also like-wise calculated from Asdt/Moon/Venus.

How does Angaraka Dosha Operate ? Beyond stating that the Angaraka Dosha causes death (or premature death) of wife/husband or alternatively estrangement or or divorce, nothing is mentioned in the standard texts as to what will be the behaviour of a native with this evil or the manner in which the Yoga operates and leads him/her to premature death. To be conscious of one's own defects, which may prove fatal in the end, is to let one arm oneself up against it. If there is no shanti/remedy, either clinically or through religious ceremonies, one will at least have the satisfaction of knowing that it was all due to one's past Karma.

19 Missing links of Hindu Astrology

From our extensive studies in this connection, we have concluded that a person with this evil (as a result of having Mars in 7th), would have, as life passes, a greater thirst for sex or fond of women, as some modern men would put it with a sense of pride. The thirst grows with the age.and the man suffering from this evil, failing to get full satisfaction, goes in for sexual perversion. The craze for perverted sexual acts sets in, under the guise of new methods of approach or innovation and because one is shy to try this nonsense at home, tries it outside. The craze goes on increasing quickly and a sort of degeneration sets in - mental as well as physical. Excessive indulgence in sex is definitely harmful. No wonder one's life gets shortened. Natives suffering from this evil, would be well-advised to exercise control of mind, either through Yogic Kriyas and Asanas or through prayers.

Chapter - 4 Dasa Nirnaya

The Major periods
TIME in Hindu Philosophy, in certain contexts, is compared to BRAHMA, the Creator (time personified) having 4 padas or quarters. The quarters are equated to Yugas. Three such Yugas have already gone by, namely the KRUTA YUGA (17,28,000 years), the second TRETA YUGA (12,96,000 years) and the third DWAPARA YUGA (8,64,000 years), and we are now living in the KALI YUGA (4,32,000 years) or the last of the four quarters. Ahoratram meaning day and night is compared to the soul of the time personified BRAHMA, for multiples thereof give months, years, Yuga and divisions thereof give hours, minutes and seconds. The divisions of time and the divisions of zodiac have some resemblance. The 7 days of the week have been named after the 7 planets. Not only that, Tuesday, Saturday and Sunday, which correspond to Mars, Saturn and Sun respectively, are discarded for certain ceremonial functions. The traditional 9 planets of the Hindu Astrology correspond to in importance to the numerals 1 to 9 which form the very basis of all mathematics. A zodiac sign is divided into 30 degrees; the day or night is divided into the same number of ghatikas (each ghatika equaling 24 minutes). There are three Gunas - Satwa, Rajas and Tamas; likewise there are three types of signs on the zodiac called movable, fixed and common. In the arrangement of the major periods (Maha Dasas - Vimshottari), the seven visible planets plus Rahu and Ketu have only been taken into account, leaving off the transSaturnian planets. Obviously, the Maharshies have discarded the latter as of no consequence in the affairs of Man. The span of a zodiac sign, viz 30 degrees stand divided amongst the 9 planets, based on which the duration of major periods or Maha Dasas have been fixed, as explained below :The first 1 have been assigned to Sun, the next 2 to Moon, the next 1 to Mars followed by 4 to Rahu, 4 to Jupiter, 4 to Saturn, 4 to Mercury, 1 to Ketu and the last 5 of a sign to Venus for a total of 30. The length in years of 9 major periods have been fixed on this rationale, as will be seen later. Even the particular order in which the Maha Dasas have been arranged has a rationale behind it. Mars (Mangal or Kuja) is traditionally considered as the son of Earth (Bhooputra); therefore the major period next to that of Mars has been rightly awarded to Rahu, shadow of Earth. Jupiter, who is capable of softening the evil effects suffered by natives in Rahu's major period, has been allotted the dasa after Rahu, followed by that of Saturn, lord of longevity; next dasa From: http://sites.google.com/site/astrolinksite/Home/index

21 Missing links of Hindu Astrology was given to Prajna Karaka (prajna - knowledge of past, present and future) Mercury; next, the planet that shows the way to Salvation namely, Ketu gets his dasa of 7 years duration, which is succeeded by the Significator for all types of Happiness - Venus; then comes the dasa of significator for soul or the point from where life springs - Sun; this is followed by that of Moon, Significator for Mother, followed by that of the Significator for elder Brother - Mars. The grand total of the 9 major periods works out to 120 years, which is said to be generally the life span of a human being in this Yuga. There have been cases of greater longevity enjoyed by certain persons in this Yuga like the Turk, ZORA AGA, reputed to have liver beyond 150 years; some of these come under the Amrit'ayur Yogas and so on. And, there is provision for such rare cases in Astrology. In the Krita Yuga, the total of 9 major periods was 14,400 years, in Treta Yuga - 3600 years and in Dwapara Yuga - 600 years whilst it has dwindled down to 120 years in this KALI YUGA. The basis on which the duration of 9 dasas has come down to such a low figure is explained thus :KALI YUGA Nakshatra dasa 4 6 10 7 18 16 19 17 7 20 120 DWAPARA YUGA 20 times Column 2 5 30 50 35 90 80 95 85 35 100 600 TRETA YUGA 6 times Dwapara Yuga 6 180 300 210 540 480 570 510 210 600 3,600 KRITA YUGA 4 times Treta Yuga 7 720 1200 840 2160 1920 2280 2040 840 2400 14,400

22 Missing links of Hindu Astrology of Hindu Astrology in Kali Yuga. Maharshies have also stated that in Krita Yuga, the Rasi Dasa (major periods based on signs) was considered the best for predictive purposes; in the next, Treta Yuga, Kala Chakra Dasa was giving very good results. In Dwapara Yuga, Jaimini Dasas and in the present Yuga, the Nakshatra Dasa Vimshottari - should be giving dependably good results. Note : The original author, in a footnote, explains that the above is the manner in which beginners in Astrology were taught about the Origin and Duration of the Maha Dasas.

About the Author and Source

As usual, Kerala the state from Sage Parasara hailed has contributed one more great soul in KKN. The translator after B Suryanaraha Rao, has been a great exponent and devotee of Swami Sivananda. He donated the books to Sivananda ashram. Mr NN Krishna Rao, though from Kerala, studied in Warangal and added the suffix Rao along with. VB Choudry had translated a few of his works. His Brihat Parasara Hora was the 1st work done in English in 1959. R Santhanam did meet his son U K Iyer in 1984 and started his works which are now the benchmark in some of the titles. U K Iyer had published some of the books from time to time like his sister late Uma but as the only surviving member of the family and a good software programmer as well, has been generous enough to publish these works on the net for the benefit of all Jyotish lovers. The language used in these texts is very modern and apt for the time and has made the "desha, kala, paristhiti" rule well a lot better than later work of sri R Santhanam. A cursory reading will surely keep you using it for future readings.
