weekly column

UTEP handled Cameron very easily in an exhibition in the Don Haskins Center. Tucker keeps showing us why he has quickly become a lead role player for the Miners. Tucker is averaging 15.0 points per game and is .625 from the 3-point mark. Bohannon, Tucker and Julian Washburn are all averaging 10+ points with Streeter coming close at 8.7 points. The Miners are coming off a lot of confidence winning 5 of their last 6 games. Colorado State will be very tough but the Miners will be ready for this televised game on CBS Sports Network. The Miners travel to Colorado to face Colorado Springs in what is going to be a touch matchup. Colorado State is lead by a string of Veteran Seniors who have played together for years. Colorado

State(MWC) is currently 11-2 and are 8-0 at home this season. The Rams currently hold a 20- home game winning streak. Lets see if that can be broken. Colorado State has 4 players averaging 10+ points and a 5th player averaging 9.9 points. This win would give UTEP its first win against a MWC school and would only add to their resume of beating a Pac-12 and BIG Ten school. Being their final nonconference game before conference play is a big factor as well.

A lot of things are shaking up in the Mountain West Conference. The Mountain West Conference announced this past weekend that Boise State will remain in the conference instead of leaving to the Big East. This could trigger a lot of things around the country. San Diego State is on its way out and this could potentially keep them in as well. Mountain West is also talking with several Texas schools like Rice, Houston and UTEP. Would UTEP be a good fit for the Mountain West Conference? The Mountain West is a definite step up from the recently flat C-USA so this could be great for the Miners. Mountain West Conference could have as many as 4-5 teams in this years NCAA tournament and are quickly becoming a very competitive conference recruitment wise.

hen the Three

Wise Men, or Magi, were chosen by fate to visit the little town of Bethlehem to bring gifts to the new-born Christ Child, little did they figure that some day in the distant future, they would be competing for attention with La Rosca de Reyes, a delicious concoction in the Spanish-speaking world. But, first to the Three Wise Men. In the time of King Herod, King of Judea - after Jesus had been born - he had ordered the Three Wise Men to bring him news of the birth so that he too could pay homage. But, he had other plans. As the birth of Jesus had been prophesied, he would become the new King of the Jews, a title which already belonged to Herod. He would harbor no competition for his throne, which meant that his intention was to murder Jesus. The Three Wise Men continued on their travels to find Jesus, finding him in the little town of Bethlehem, led by the Rising Star. Traveling from afar, the three Magi were Melchior a Persian scholar; Baltazar, an Arabian scholar, and Caspar, an Indian scholar - who proffered their gifts to the baby Jesus, they knelt to him in honor and respect. Having heard of Herods intentions in a dream, they returned to the land of

it is obligated to provide another feast to take place on February 2. The knife which is used to cut the slices symbolizes the danger that faced the baby Jesus. As each guest opens up his or her slice, sighs of relief are heard that the figurine was not found. But, the joke is on everyone, because whoever found the figurine, it their births through a different route. Each was said to be a King in his own land. When Herod learned that the Wise Men were not to pass through his Kingdom again, he ordered the deaths of all the children in Bethlehem, in effect, to kill the new-born Jesus. The day was known as the Massacre of Innocents. However, his plan was thwarted because Jesus and his family had already fled to Egypt. The three gifts of gold, frankincense and myrrh were said to mean different things to different people. Gold was the symbol of Kingship, myrrh was an anointing oil, while frankincense was a perfume of sorts. Jesus survived King Herod, of course, and, thus was born a Mexican tradition and in effect a tradition throughout the Spanish-speaking world that on January 6, children would be given their presents celebrating Christmas, rather than on the more traditional day of December 25. Known as El Dia de Los Reyes, January 6 became the day in which the three Magi found the baby Jesus. Just as in the traditional Christmas Day, children in Mexico and now in El Paso eagerly await the morning of January 6, when the Magi have left them their gifts. Children write letters to their favorite Wise Man asking for their favorite things. On the night of January 5, the figurines of the Three Wise Men are added to the Nativity Scene. Before going to bed, children place their old shoes under the bed or in the living room, where the Wise Men will leave their gifts so that the children will find them in the morning when they awaken. On that magic day, adults prepare a feast that will include the Rosca de Reyes which is an oval sweetbread loaded with candied fruit tamales, and hot chocolate. The Roscas come in all sizes some as small as to feed two people, and some large enough for 20 people. The feast, called La Merienda de Reyes originated in Spain and was brought to the New World with La Rosca taking center stage. Hidden inside each Rosca is a plastic figurine of the baby Jesus. As each guest opens his slice of bread, he looks for the figurine, giving a sigh of relief when it is not there. When the figurine is found, however, whoever finds

becomes a symbol of pride that they have been chosen to continue Christmas Day. On this day, known as El Dia de la Candelaria, the baby Jesus in the Nativity Scene is dressed in new clothes. Hispanics all over the world, including El Paso, also celebrate one more day, on Feb.

21, when the Nativity Scene is put away. Another family feast of tamales and hot chocolate then marks the end of the holiday season. With so many Mexicans relocating to El Paso, celebrations such as Los Tres Reyes Magos and, of course, La Rosca, will continue to grow and flourish.

What was that around the Moon?

I had a number of calls to my ABC-7 voicemail Tuesday (Christmas Day) concerning a strange ring around the moon that night. The callers all seemed more alarmed than anything else. The ring that many of you noticed was a phenomenon that is called a Halo (see picture below). A Halo is formed from high level clouds (usually around 20,000 feet) that are made of millions of tiny ice crystals. Its these ice crystals that refract or reflect the light from the moon forming this ring. This is similar to the way rainbows are formed. Its when sunlight is reflected off the raindrops. One interesting aspect of this halo is that it does allow you to forecast the weather to some degree. When you witness the ring around the moon, it can mean rain is on the way over the next two or three days. The old weather folklore goes like this: ring around the moon means rain soon. We had this halo Monday evening, and, sure enough, we had some light rain Thursday evening. Halos can occur throughout the year; however, they are a bit more common during the winter. This is because the colder air is more likely to produce ice crystals.

Like love, furniture can be better the second time around. Rebuilt/reupholstered pieces are also a good investment.
Photo: Brett Beyer

By Rose Bennett Gilbert Q: We kinda ran out of funds after we bought our new-to-us house last fall, and we are having to ditch our grand plans for new furniture, too. The trouble is, we gave away most of our old stuff before we moved. Any ideas on how to fill in the blanks will be appreciated. A: Actually, you may have done yourselves a favor: our recycling-savvy century is rich with second-hand furniture that was made in the middle of the last

and made to last, much of it from native American woods. Prowl through resale shops and charity catch-alls, such as Good Will and the Salvation Army. Chances are good you'll find everything you need to furnish and furbish your house, from beds to chairs, tables, bookcases and storage pieces. The trick is to shop with foresight: don't focus on the furniture's current condition. Envision how it will look refinished, repainted, repaired and reupholstered to look and wear like new. Then when you do the math, you'll see how recycling

can be as kind to your budget as it is attractive to live with. But don't take just my word for it. In the clean, open and inviting room we show here, award-winning New York interior designer Drew McGurkin puts "used" furniture to great reuse. The sofa and two chairs, now orange, were already in the client's life when Drew and his team took on the renovation of her house in the Hamptons. Rebuilt and reupholstered, the "old" furniture is enjoying a smart second life in her second home. Continues on page 9

Bulimia Can Be Overcome

DR. WALLACE: My 18-year-old cousin has the eating disorder called bulimia. This means she eats a lot of food and then goes to the restroom and vomits it all up. Our entire family is really concerned about her health, especially her parents. I learned a lot about bulimia on the Internet, but I haven't yet found out why people become bulimic. If she just wanted to be slim, she would just workout and eat good foods. So why is my cousin bulimic? Nameless, Sidney, Ohio.

Let's play a game. I just saw it in the latest Bond thriller "Skyfall" M dies in 007's arms, don't tell so I know it's still in fashion. I'll say a few words, and you respond with the first thing that pops into what's left of your mind after three slices of bouche noel. Me: "Your New Year's Resolution." You: "Lose 20 pounds." Me: "Your New Year's Resolution." You: "Exercise three times a week."

are within reach if you are very specific about what you want and how you're going to get there. And I do mean you. This is one of the most important truths recently revealed in the psychology of change: You have to be deeply, fully ready to change, and you have to be focused on a goal that is truly meaningful to you. You can't lose weight just because your doctor or your spouse wants you to. Ditto for stopping smoking, ending excessive drinking, overcoming your addiction to both sugar and cellphones, though not at the same time. These are all worthy resolutions for the coming year, but your homework for next week is to come up with a Healthy Lifestyle Goal that you can commit to achieving. If you work at it strategically, your odds of being successful are actually better than we've been led to believe, according to a fascinating book by John Tierney and Roy Baumeister called "Willpower." It was published last year and is highly regarded for its gamechanging insights. How do we exercise self-control? Why do we lose it, and how can we get it back before we indulge in another pepperoni pizza? The co-authors of "Willpower" make the case that your willpower isn't just a concept. It's an actual biological event in your body, a "real form of mental energy," says psychologist Baumeister. The will, the authors propose, can be thought of as a muscle. It can become fatigued. When it's fatigued, we start eating Krispy Kremes for breakfast. We reach for our third glass of wine or, in my case, my 30th french fry, extra crispy. But here's the good news: If your willpower is like a muscle and can be fatigued, then it can be strengthened, too, and made to last longer. One way to do that is to Play Defense. Look ahead, and plan your environment so your best intentions are supported. If your goal is to lose weight, keep fresh, good-for-you foods and drinks in your home. Don't load up your counters or shelves with junky processed foods. Get support from websites and software that support keeping track, waging bets, finding community. But these are just strategies. The most important action you can take now is to figure out what ONE THING you want to change about yourself in this new year. Forget the year. Let's just say the next three months. That's how long it takes to a new healthy habit.

NAMELESS: Both males and females can fall victim to bulimia, but young women are primarily at risk. According to the booklet, "Bulimia, eating yourself sick," on the surface, bulimics appear to be healthy, happy and successful. They are achievers; they excel in school, sports and on their jobs, but are never satisfied because they think they are not good enough. They strive to attain perfection, but never quite make it. If she can't be perfect on her diet, she overeats and then vomits to get rid of the food and her shame. The desire to be perfect comes from a poor selfimage. Many bulimics don't see themselves as lovable, so they put a great deal of emphasis on their appearance. The roots of bulimia are often found in the family structure. Often bulimics want to please their parents to a degree that they become obsessed with gaining their approval. But bulimia is a treatable condition. Hope and help are available. Medical and mental health professionals use a variety of plans that work: group therapy, individual counseling, family therapy, behavior modification, anti-depressant medication and support groups. Many bulimics want to rid themselves of this addictive food obsession, but are embarrassed to seek help. You and your parents could pass this information along to your cousin's parents and encourage them to discuss the illness with their family doctor who can make helpful professional recommendations.

Still Me: "Your New Year's Resolution!" You (after a long pause): "Forget it! What's the point?" ... and maybe, depending on how often you've tried to take up yoga and give up ice cream, you begin to cry. Cheer up! The world is taking a big bounce in a whole new direction, and 2013 is the start of a whole new year ... decade ... baktun. My gift to you this holiday season is to assure you that next year can be a change year for you, a transformative year, the start of new habits, healthier choices, fewer back aches, more bike rides, a better handle on what stresses you out and how to let it go. Repeat after me: This New Year of 2013 will be different. There's an art and a science to making lifestyle changes that last, and if you learn the basics and play by those rules most of the time, you will succeed. And think! You will die healthier. I'm a professional well-being coach. I've seen it happen. The lifestyle changes you want for yourself more physical activity, smarter eating, better balance between work and home

I'm Confused and Don't Know What to Do

DR. WALLACE: Please, please answer my request in your column. I don't know who else to ask. My 19-year-old daughter, my only child, told me that she is in love with another 20-year-old female, and they are living together and plan to get married whenever the time is right for them. This news was totally unexpected. I have never been married, and I raised my daughter from birth to the present. I'm totally at a loss for words. I always dreamed she would marry a man she loved, would make me a grandma and live happily ever after. I love my daughter with all of my heart and soul, but I'm confused and don't know what to do? Can you help me, and tell me what I should do? Mother, Cumberland, Md. MOTHER: Continue being a loving mother. It might be a difficult situation now, but in time you will be able to accept your daughter's partner and realize that they love one another. Your daughter's happiness is of utmost importance.

FATHER AND SON RECONCILIATION STALLS AFTER EMAIL EXCHANGE

DEAR ABBY: I cut my father out of my life years ago, after he declared he could not support my decision to adopt three children from a Russian orphanage with my longtime companion. The adoption announcement coincided with my "coming out" to Dad, who is now married to his third wife. It must have been a lot for him to take in at one time. He told me plainly that he could not support my decision because he could not "understand" it. He has never met our children, and does not acknowledge them as his grandchildren. This year on Father's Day, I sent him a card and he replied by email that he was glad to hear from me and he hoped for a reconciliation, but was not sure how to go about it. I responded by email that I was cautiously optimistic that we could reignite a respectful relationship. I haven't heard back from him and I suspect it's because he saw that I had changed my last name from his to my husband's, a decision I made after our marriage. My father was not aware that I had gotten married. I think I have overwhelmed him again, which has rendered him speechless. Please advise me on how to proceed. -PRODIGAL SON IN CALIFORNIA DEAR SON: Call your father, tell him you love him and that you would like to schedule a visit with him -- but would like to send him some reading material before you do. Then contact PFLAG (Parents, Families and Friends of Lesbians and Gays). The phone number is 202-467-8180 and you'll find them on the Internet at www.pflag.org. They will be happy to provide you with literature for your dad to help him "understand." Frankly, he has my sympathy because before you hit him with the "double whammy," he didn't have a clue about who you really are. Whether your name change overwhelmed him or not is irrelevant. The ball is now in your court, so if you want to have a hope of a relationship with your father, YOU will have to make the next move. ** DEAR ABBY: Two years ago, I proposed to the woman who changed me for the better. I love her with all my heart, but after we had been engaged for only four days everything came to a stop. Her mother was against the marriage, and my fiancee wasn't strong enough to follow her heart. We had been in a relationship for more than nine years, most of it long distance except for the last two years. I couldn't understand her change of heart, and I tried with all my might to find some middle ground. "Claudette" has three children from her first marriage, and I had become a part of their lives and an important family friend. After getting no reason for calling off the wedding, I began texting her for an answer only to be arrested for cyber-stalking. I know in my heart from letters sent back and forth that this wasn't Claudette's idea, but I can't let go. I know she's the one for me. We made a great couple, but her mother couldn't stand the fact that we were so close. How do I let her go? -- GRIEVING IN FLORIDA DEAR GRIEVING: You may not believe this, but you're a lucky man. It may take the help of a psychologist for you to disengage emotionally and move on. Given that you wound up in trouble with the law, this would be a wise decision. It might also help to envision what it would have been like being married not only to Claudette, but also to her mother -- because they appear to be joined at the hip, and the part that's doing the thinking isn't your former fiancee. This may be the reason that her first marriage failed. **

ies in your part of the sky, it's as though the heavens are cheering for you. Seize this time; it's your time! AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18). Mars is an invigorating presence in your part of the sky, lending you a physical burst of strength and vitality that would be a shame to waste. Consider taking on a fitness or dietary goal. The early week is ideal for planning how to make this a reality. Friday's new moon in determined Capricorn is the perfect start date. PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20). Mercury and Pluto connect to point out obstacles to personal growth. You may see them best as you are tripping over them, and that's good. "We stumble and fall constantly even when we are most enlightened. But when we are in true spiritual darkness, we do not even know that we have fallen." Thomas Merton THIS WEEK'S BIRTHDAYS: Many can fight when a fight is required. But a peaceful, harmonious existence takes much more work and sacrifice and a greater degree of heroism. This is how you live this year. You do what's necessary to get along, to have strong relationships and a smooth road from day to day. Romantic promises will be exchanged this month. You'll master a job and be paid handsomely in February. March brings music to your world. May and July show you new parts of the world.

"Undercover Boss" Yourself

The cosmic board meeting takes place in Capricorn now, as the sun, Mercury and Pluto mingle in the sea goat's part of the sky. Venus and the moon join the meeting, inviting us to become the undercover bosses of our own lives. Return to the basics to understand the higher levels of our existence. Make plans, write lists, assemble teams and set up structures. The new moon in Capricorn on Friday is an ideal day to start. ARIES (March 21-April 19). An old relationship will move in a fresh direction this week. This doesn't necessarily have to do with another person. It could be your relationship with money, work or your own body that takes a turn for the better. Friday brings clarity regarding the rules you want to live by from here on out. TAURUS (April 20-May 20). Whatever a loved one asks of you, you're up to the task. But are your requests being answered with equal enthusiasm? Learn from your past mistakes, and assert yourself sooner in a relationship rather than later. Also of note, there's a mystery brewing, and Saturday will most certainly satisfy your curiosity. GEMINI (May 21-June 21). As Mercury, your ruling planet, connects with Pluto this week, get prepared to run into exactly the person, problem or entity you want nothing to do with. Life's not-so-funny little coincidences may seem inconvenient, but later you'll appreciate this chance to rise to the occasion. The weekend brings pleasant attention. CANCER (June 22-July 22). This week's Venus transit has a stabilizing effect on your personal and romantic life. You may suddenly feel more in control of your feelings and better able to separate emotions from facts. The practicalities of relationships may even seem to matter more than those passing feelings that you can't quantify or touch. LEO (July 23-Aug. 22). All hands point to your career, and you'll get general focus and clarity regarding your next moves. This won't come in the form of an idea that strikes like lightning from the blue. Instead, it comes from getting your hands dirty with the work that must be done. The Capricorn new moon on Friday opens a fresh chapter. VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22). Seriousness is optional. It may be challenging to stay lighthearted in your daily life as your ruling planet, Mercury, connects with the deeply intense dwarf planet Pluto. At times, it may feel as though you have to decide the fate of the whole world. If that is the case, it's better to do it with a smile on your face. LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 23). You're capable on your own, but that is no way to live. Poet John Donne wrote: "No man is an island, entire of itself. Each piece of the continent, a part of the main." This week reveals your best supporters. One strong cheerleader will make a huge difference in the outcome of your endeavors. SCORPIO (Oct. 24-Nov. 21). As your guiding planet, Pluto, makes a connection with communicative Mercury, you'll want to talk about the deeper issues of life the same ones that make others uncomfortable. If anyone can get people to open up, it's you. If there's something to get off your chest, just do it. You'll be healthier for the effort. SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21). You know people. If your goal is to reuse, recycle and redo, you're in for some creative ideas in today's column. I never would have thought to modify my paper towel roll, but I'm going to try it after reading Claude's tip. committed to using the most ecofriendly paper products, and also reducing the waste and expense of brown paper towels. We cut the roll in two uneven rolls, 3 inches and 8 inches. We then thread them onto our vertical holder, with the smaller roll on top. When we need only a bit of towel, the 3-inch piece suffices. My friend who has a wall-mounted holder cuts the roll carefully without damaging the cardboard center and gets the same cost-saving results. Claude, Massachusetts

I have kept a price book for many years now, and it definitely helps me purchase with confidence. I like to use a small address book and a pencil. I list items under the corresponding letter tab (for example: Rice in the "R" section). I note the item and then leave room to note a few variations. I include the brand, package size, price, date and store. I use pencil so that I can update when prices or package sizes change. The tabbed letters of the address book make it quick to look things up on the fly. I also keep a small calculator in my purse so that I can easily calculate per ounce/piece/etc. to compare items. I've even had friends call me when they've seen a sale or special to find out if it really is a good deal. Kristine, Colorado

DR. WALLACE: I'm 13 and so is my best friend. Our problem is that we both like the same boy. We asked him which one of us he likes better, and he said he likes us both the same. She and I talked it over and decided that one of us would have to find another boy to like. First, we were going to flip a coin to see who would be his girlfriend, but then she suggested that whoever got the highest grade on our next spelling test would be the winner. Both of us studied really hard. She only missed one word and got an A. Because I was nervous, I missed two words and received an A-. Now that I think about it, she has always been the better speller, and I think she conned me into competing with her on the spelling test. Yesterday she told me she has let the boy know that she's now his girlfriend. But I don't want to look for another boy. I like this one. I also think he really likes me more than he likes her. I have a huge dilemma. What should I do? Nameless, Knoxville, Tenn. NAMELESS: You made an agreement with your friend, and now you must honor it. Don't interfere with her and the boy. Too many times, one party agrees to something and will later try to back out. Professional athletes are a good example. They sign a contract for millions of dollars and then decide midway through that they want to renegotiate for more money because some other player signed a better contract. You gave your word. Now keep it! Besides, boys are fickle! Don't be surprised if he decides he likes you a little more than he likes your friend.

Family Feedings
Want your kid to eat more fruits and vegetable? Eat with them. A University of Leeds study found that children who see their parents eating healthy foods tend to eat them more. According to the study, 63 percent of children worldwide don't consume the World Health Organization's recommended amount of five portions (400g) of fruits and vegetables per day. The researchers said children who always ate a family meal together at a table consumed 125 grams (1.5 portions) more fruits and vegetables on average than children who never ate with their families. Even those who reported eating together only once or twice a week consumed 1.2 portions more than those who never ate together. "Even if it's just one family meal a week, when children eat together with parents or older siblings they learn about eating. Watching the way their parents or siblings eat and the different types of food they eat is pivotal in creating their own food habits and preferences," said study author Janet Cade, a professor at the University of Leeds School of Food Science and Nutrition.

Terminals also provide the ability to spawn a variety of vehicles as long as the player's team has the appropriate resources. Why run the long distance between conflicts when you can spawn a mighty tank and smash your way through the enemy! It's also fun to hop into a flying vehicle and rain hell on your enemies from above. Want to travel somewhere without drawing attention? Simply spawn an ATV and sneak your way in. Unlike most modern FPS games, using teamwork is essential in "Planetside 2." That's why the developers made it so easy to join other squads of cyber-soldiers or create your own. In addition, squad leaders can drop special spawn points so other squad mates can group up quickly and easily. It's also possible for more than one player to jump in certain vehicles, and the gigantic flying

Cyber-war is hell. I'm not talking about the simplistic, pseudo-warfare that most military-based first person shooters provide. FAST-TRACK A PERFECT PUPPY

Crate-training the preferred way prevents accidents as your puppy grows
By Gina Spadafori
Universal Uclick If you have a new puppy, its time to learn about crate-training. Every year more people turn to this method, with good reason: Its easier on pups and people alike. I find the crate to be very effective when used in house-training for a couple of reasons, says my friend Liz Palika, who has spent more than three decades teaching dog obedience in the San Diego area. Shes also the author of thousands of pet care articles and more than 50 books, including a recent one aimed at helping grade-school children train the family dog, Dog Obedience: Getting Your Pooch Off the Couch and Other Dog Training Tips (Capstone, $21). First, when the dog is confined, he cant sneak off to another room or behind the sofa to relieve himself. Second, when in the crate, he learns and develops bowel and bladder control, because few dogs are willing to soil their bed, she notes. Palika and I have been friends for many years, and we each recently added puppies to our families. Mine is Ned, a Shetland sheepdog, and hers is Bones, an English shepherd. She and Bones, along with her two other dogs, Bashir and Sisko, recently spent a couple of days visiting with me and my animal family which now includes two goats, neither house-trained, by the way. Of course, we talked dog training. We both like crate-training, and have used it for all our dogs for many years. Crate-training limits a puppys options to three: 1) Hes either empty and playing in the house; 2) hes in the crate and holding it because he doesnt want to sit in his own waste; or 3) hes

From Daytona to Homestead, it was a season to remember
As the calendar rolls over from 2012 to 2013, and the NASCAR guys and gals get away from the tracks for a few weeks, its time to look back at the big stories of the recently completed Sprint Cup season.

ts often been said that the season-opening Daytona 500, NASCARs biggest race, sets the tone for the entire year.

First, there was the rain that came on race day and forced the only rainout of the history of the 500. But the news wasnt all bad, because that put NASCAR racing live on prime time TV for the first time ever. That switch led to the highest number of viewers ever to watch a FOX race broadcast. Then there was the fire, when Juan Pablo Montoya lost control of his car and slammed into a jet dryer, igniting a spectacular blaze and causing a two-hour delay while repairs were made to the track. Luckily for NASCAR, just as it looked like the TV audience might tune out because of the delay, Brad Keselowski whipped out his cell phone and began Tweeting about the incident. In addition to gaining about 100,000 Twitter followers, he gave NASCARs social media initiative a huge boost.

The start of the 2012 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series Daytona 500 on February 27 in Daytona Beach, Fla. (NASCAR photo
Later in the season, NASCAR decided cell phones in race cars were a bad idea and fined Keselowski $25,000 for Tweeting from his car during a red flag at Phoenix. Finally, at the end of the 500, there was Matt Kenseth winning his second Daytona 500. That victory, in addition to his solid performance throughout the season, made his mid-year announcement that he was leaving his Roush-Fenway Racing team for Joe Gibbs Racing even more startling. Hes taking over the No. 20 Toyota formerly driven by Joey Logano, who is moving to the No. 22 at Penske Racing as a teammate to Keselowski. Dale Earnhardt Jr.s strong runner-up run at Daytona was the start of a comeback season for NASCARs most popular driver. He broke a 143-race winless streak at Michigan in June and made the cut for the Chase for the Sprint Cup. Also grabbing headlines at Daytona were the rules infractions by Jimmie Johnsons No. 48 crew. NASCAR initially suspended crew chief Chad Knaus and car chief Ron Malec, docked the team 25 points and fined Knaus $100,000 for improper modifications to their car. The team appealed, and in a stunning move, NASCAR Chief Appellate Officer John Middlebrook overturned the most damaging parts of the penalties, leaving in place only the fine against Knaus. The drama that began at Daytona continued throughout the season. Both races at Bristol Motor Speedway produced interesting results. The Food City 500 in March, won by Keselowski, saw seas of empty seats in the grandstands, prompting track owner Bruton Smith to grind portions of the pavement in an attempt to bring back the old Bristol that often saw slam-bang racing because of the lack of multiple grooves. But when the night race in August got under way, the top of the track that had been ground in an attempt to keep drivers on the bottom, actually proved to be the preferred line. But fans were entertained as in the past, thanks in large part to Tony Stewart and Matt Kenseth. After the two crashed while racing for the lead, Stewart got out of his car and threw his helmet at Kenseths car, bouncing it off the front end.Continues on page 23

Mitsubishis odd green machine the i.

The Mitsubishi i is weird. Its shape looks like the designers blended the styles of a Smart car with a computer mouse and the result came to be the i. But styling isnt what the i, whose official name is the iMiEV, is about, rather it is meant to deliver all-electric efficiency at an affordable price, and Mitsubishi seems to have accomplished just that. Next to Nissans Leaf, the i is the greenest car on the market. Different from a hybrid that uses both gas and electric motors to propel the car, the i is 100% electric. And unlike the Chevrolet Volt that has an onboard gas generator, the i is powered solely by grid electricity which charges its lithiumion battery pack. Take a peek at the rear of the i and youll notice the lack of a tailpipe. The California Air Resource Board (CARB) gives the i a perfect 10 (cleanest) when it comes to ger. In back, legroom comes up short and the seats are not very supportive. But they do fold flat, giving the i a decent 50 cubic feet of cargo capacity. The instrument cluster is ridiculously simple with just a digital speedometer, Charge/Eco/Power meter, a fuelgauge, and an indicator telling the range is. Like a hybrid in electric mode, driving this all-electric Mitsubishi is eerie silent except the quietness never ceases in the i. As you may expect, its slow, but it can safely get you up to speed, albeit it with no drama. You can thank the is rear-mounted 66 horsepower electric motor and single gear for that. I spent a few days using the i as my sole source of transportation. Every night I plugged it in and every morning it indicated that it was it was fully charged. With a 35-mile daily commute, there were no issues with running out of juice.

By Christopher A. Randazzo
One thing I quickly learned (and liked) about the i was how accurate the range meter was. Other electric cars had the miles on the range meter ticking away long before the true distance was covered. Not so with the i. And turn off all the accessories and the i will respond by adding more miles to your range. But there is still no denying the fact that I was constantly monitoring the battery life and always wondering what I would do if I did run out of power. This concern is sometimes referred to as range anxiety a new phrase popular with electric car buyers and potential owners. Luckily, I never found myself with less than 10 miles left, and I made it a habit to always plug in when I got home. There are two trim levels for the i - the base ES and the higher-up SE. The ES looks plain with its steel wheels but does come equipped with full power accessories. My i was the SE model that gets nicer alloy wheels along with foglamps, nicer interior and a better audio system. Total price on my tester was $34,920 but that is before the $7,500 federal tax credit. The i ES starts at $29,125. Like other electric cars, the Mitsubishi i isnt for everybody. If your daily commute is less than 25 miles each way, it works out well; anything more than that may be reason to look at a hybrid. But with the i, just knowing that stopping at gas stations and even oil changes are things of the past is a great feeling. Throw in the fact that you are helping the environment and you can see that the i is a true green machine that delivers on its promises. Now about the way it looks

Global Warming and Smog impact. Replenishing the battery pack is similar to other electric cars just plug it into a 120V or 220V outlet (using a special charger, sold separately). A typical 120V outlet means it will take a long 22 hours to recharge a depleted battery whereas the 220V will do the job in seven hours.

Once the i is fully charged it can travel 62 miles, giving it the shortest range in the electric-car segment. And once the battery is depleted, you are out of luck. Not even triple-A can save you unless they have a super long extension cord. But being simple is what makes the i stand out. Its easily the smallest car in its class, but the front seats provide ample room for both the driver and passen-

Rearview mirror 2012...

Continued from page 20 Denny Hamlin took the win, one of his five for the season. NASCARs return trip to Daytona in July produced another stunning story. Just before the start of the race, NASCAR announced that Penske Racing driver A.J. Allmendinger had been temporarily suspended from NASCAR because he didnt pass a random drug test. He was replaced by Sam Hornish Jr. Allmendinger soon completed NASCARs Road to Recovery program and rejoined the series in Charlotte in October. He ran a total of four races for Phoenix Racing. The Finger Lakes 355 at Watkins Glen on Aug. 12 turned out to be more significant than most races. Kyle Busch, who put aside much of his participation in the Nationwide and Camping World Truck series to concentrate on winning a Sprint Cup championship, was in position to essentially sew up a Chase berth before the last lap at the Glen. But while leading on the final circuit, he spun after contact with Brad Keselowski, who finished second in the race. Marcos Ambrose then made a daring move on Keselowski to get the victory, which helped his Richard Petty Motorsports team continue to receive much-needed funding from Ford Motor Company. As for Busch, he missed the cut for the Chase and finished the season with just one Cup win and none in either the Nationwide or Truck Series. Thats in contrast to 2011 when he had 18 combined wins, to 2010 when he had 24 and to 2009 when he had 21. Safety also was an issue in 2012. Dale Earnhardt Jr. was among those saying early on that racing is plenty safe these days. The cars are safe, and we are not in physical danger of injury, he said at Watkins Glen. But just a few weeks later, on Aug. 29, Earnhardt suffered a concussion in a hard crash during a tire test at Kansas Speedway. He kept his injuries to himself until a second crash, at Talladega Superspeedway on Oct.7. At that point he was diagnosed with concussions and was forced to miss the next two races. He wound up 12th in the final points standings and had 10 top-five finishes for the season, but none after the Kansas crash. The 10-race championshipdeciding Chase for the Sprint Cup played out in dramatic fashion as it boiled down to a one-onone between Keselowski, in his third full year of Sprint Cup racing, and the five-time champion, Johnson, in his 11th. Keselowski won the Chase opener at Chicagoland Speedway and was never lower than second in points throughout the final 10 races. Johnson came on strong at the end, winning at Martinsville and Texas and holding the points lead after those two races. But in the next-to-last race at Phoenix, Johnson crashed hard and fell to 20 points behind Keselowski entering the finale at Homestead-Miami Speedway. In the Ford 400, pit strategy had put Johnson in position to win the race and possibly the championship before a penalty on pit road put him behind. Then a

crash that ended what would have been a storybook moment for team owner Rick Hendrick. Two of his drivers, Jeff Gordon and Jimmie Johnson, were at the front of the pack and in position to claim the 200th Cup win for Hendrick at the track where he got his first Cup victory and where he lost family members and friends in a plane crash. Instead, they were collected in a crash that set the stage for a win by Ryan Newman. But Bowyer didnt get off scotfree.
