The effects of wildfire burn severity on the diversity and abundance of mycorrizae in Bastrop State Park, Texas This study is based on the Lost Pines ecosystem found in and around Bastrop State Park, Texas. This system is the westernmost distribution of loblolly pine, Pinus taeda. Soil samples will be processed in the laboratory using a PowerSoil DNA Isolation Kit and sent for Illumina sequencing. Based on previous research, it is predicted that the diversity and abundance of soil fungal populations will decrease significantly as burn intensity increases. It is also predicted that one species or genus may emerge with greater abundance in moderate burn severity areas as a result of an r-selected life history strategy. The effects of land use history on Dendrobates pumilio in Heredia Provence, Costa Rica This study was performed at La Selva Biological Preserve. Random sampling of frogs was conducted on a series of 15 x 15 meter plots in old growth forest, abandoned cacao plantation and developed land habitats. Due to elevated numbers of nesting sites Dendrobates pumilio were most abundant, healthy and fecund in the abandoned cacao plantation. Implications include additional evidence for land rehabilitation after use.
