Dreams are successions of images, ideas, emotions, and sensations that occur involuntarily in the mind during certain

stages ofsleep.[1] The content and purpose of dreams are not definitively understood, though they have been a topic of scientific speculation, as well as a subject of philosophical and religious interest, throughout recorded history. The scientific study of dreams is called oneirology. Scientists believe that, in addition to humans, certain birds and the majority of mammals also dream.

Dreams can last for a few seconds, or as long as twenty minutes. People are more likely to remember the dream if they are awakened during the REM phase. The average person has about 3 to 5 dreams per night, but some may have up to 7 dreams in one night. The dreams tend to last longer as the night progresses. During a full 8-hour night sleep, two hours of it is spent dreaming.

The hypothesis that sleep is involved in memory consolidation has been investigated recently by four paradigms: Effects of sleep deprivation on memory consolidation; Effects of learning on sleep post-workout; Effects of stimulation during sleep on sleep patterns and memory, and Re-expression of neuronal specific behavior patterns during sleep post-workout.
