KEY FACTSHEET
BS 7671:2008 REQUIREMENTS FOR ELECTRICAL INSTALLATIONS, IEE WIRING REGULATIONS SEVENTEENTH EDITION

16TH EDITION - 17TH EDITION REGULATION NUMBER COMPARISONS

INTRODUCTION/PURPOSE

he purpose of this Factsheet is to assist users of the Regulations who are familiar with the content and layout of the 16th Edition, to readily identify the locations of regulations that have been changed, transferred to different sections or removed from BS 7671 in the 17th Edition. Part 5 - Selection and Erection of Equipment Chapter 55 - Other Equipment Section 551 - Low Voltage Generating Sets The section contains additional regulations for the installation of sustainable energy generating equipment. Section 559 is a new section - Luminaires and Lighting Installations. Part 6 - Inspection & Testing was Part 7 in the 16th Edition Part 7 - Special Locations was Part 6 in the 16th Edition NEW SECTIONS: 709 711 712 721 740 Marinas and similar locations Exhibitions, Shows and Stands Solar Photovoltaic (PV) Power Supply Systems Caravans and Motor Caravans Temporary Electrical Installations for Structures, Amusement Devices and Booths at Fairgrounds, Amusement Parks and Circuses Floor and Ceiling Heating Systems

The principal technical changes to the Regulations are set out in the Introduction to BS 7671:2008. The majority of the changes reflect harmonisation with International IEC 60364 and European CENELEC HD 60384 series of standards. However, there are a number of new regulations and changes to existing regulations that are specific to UK practices.

GENERAL CHANGES TO THE LAYOUT AND ADDITIONS TO THE CONTENTS OF THE REGULATIONS:
THE NUMBERING SYSTEM: Each regulation has been renumbered to match the numbering system used in IEC 60364 and CENELEC HD 60384. The renumbering of every Section or Regulation is not shown in this Factsheet. Regulations are only shown where changes have been made. The structure of the regulation numbers is similar to that in the 16th Edition. Many of the Section numbers retain the first three digits of the number. The numbers that follow relate to the sub-sections and individual regulations. The numbers in Part 7 align with the numbers of the related regulations in Parts 1 to 6.

753 -

REMOVALS: 607 Earthing requirements for the installation of equipment having high protective conductor currents. The regulations have been included in Chapter 54 Division One - Electrical Installations in Caravans and Motor Caravans is a separate Section 721

608 For example, in Locations Containing a Bath or Shower, Section 701 of the 17th Edition, Regulation 701.415.2 refers to the Supplementary Bonding clause in Chapter 41, Section 415.2 Additional Protection: Supplementary equipotential bonding. Explanatory notes have been added to many regulations. When considering a particular regulation, it is important that it is read in full and all of the regulations in the group considered, including the notes, in order to ascertain the full requirements.

A complete list of special locations is detailed in the Table of Cross References. ADDITIONAL APPENDICES: 9 10 11 12 13 Definitions - multiple source, d.c. and other systems Protection of conductors in parallel against overcurrent Effect of harmonic currents on balanced threephase systems Voltage drop in consumers installations Methods for measuring the insulation resistance/ impedance of floors and walls to earth or to the protective conductor system Measurement of earth fault loop impedance: consideration of the increase of the resistance of conductors with increase of temperature Ring and radial final circuit arrangements, Regulation 433.1

MAJOR CHANGES TO THE PARTS

Part 4 - Protection for Safety Chapter 41 - Protection against Electric Shock is rewritten Chapter 47 - Applications has been removed and many of the regulations have been transferred to the related chapters in Part 4
