Because this GT uses a nonoverhead cam engine, rather than the Twin Dual Cam 3.4-liter shown last year, it has 130 fewer pounds up front which means it handles better-and has better odds of being produced. rn

As you know, Hyundai will introduce a production model based on its HCD-I1 show car in 1996 as a 1997 model (AW, Jan. 18). Doug Mazza, executive vice president and COO of Hyundai Motor America, expects it will retail for "$15,000 or less in today's dollars." HCD-I1 appeared at the Chicago Auto Show in a new coat of silver metalflake paint which shows off its deeply drawn muscular flanks better than did the deep purple in which it first appeared last month at Detroit. The car now also is fully driveable. Its Beta engine, the second motor to be designed by Hyundai, has variable valve timing as well as variable induction. Hyundai is considering the name Epoch for the production version. b
