Big Bend Ranch State Park to Host Third-Annual Chihuahuan Desert Bike Fest
Three-Day Mountain Bike Event Adds More Ride Options at Texas Largest State Park

WOW!!! Thats all anyone

can say about Mckenzie Moores 3point game winner on Saturday night. The Miners were trailing most of the game against ECU but pulled off a stunning 68-67 win. The miners were down by 2 with only 4.4 seconds left when Mckenzie Moore put up a 3-point shot right as time was expiring. It was great to see this young miner team celebrate along with the coaching staff going nuts as well. The Miners field goal percentage is continuing to go up and that shows maturity and flow. The miners now have 3 players averaging in double figures and Streeter almost there with 9.0 average points per game. UTEP will finish its road trip this week against UAB(8-12) and Tulane(14-6 ). UAB is lead by Junior Rod Rucker who is averaging 13.8 points per game and 8.4 rebounds. The 6-6 forward from Atlanta will be hard to contain. UTEPS last game against Tulane was a very tough win. Im sure Tulane will be ready to challenge the miners and especially at the 3-point line. The Miners have developed into a great team. Knowing if it will be good enough for an NCAA tournament bid is still uncertain. UTEP's current RPI is 69 and the BPI is 62 in standings. The Miners 11-7 record is fair but realistically can only lose maybe 1 or 2 conference games the rest of the season to still be considered for the NCAA Tournament. Around the conference Southern Miss(17-4) is 6-0 in conference play. Southern Miss also has a 42 rank RPI. C-USA powerhouse Memphis(16-3) is sitting at nicely at a 5-0 conference record and a 52 rank RPI. Most likely C-USA will only have 2 teams representing in the NCAA Tournament.

Groundhog Day: A worldwide tradition

All Groundhogs look alike, however. They are 20 inches long and can weigh anywhere from 12 to 15 pounds. Our friend, Phil, however, weighs a hefty 20 pounds and is longer than your average groundhog at 22 inches. Most of them are covered with coarse grayish hairs, tipped with brown, or sometimes red. They have short ears, a short tail, short legs, and are very quick movers. They have exceptionally strong jaws. Groundhogs eat mostly greens, fruits and vegetables, but dont drink a lot of water, getting their moisture from dewy leaves. Groundhogs can whistle when they are alarmed, they can also whistle in the Spring, when they are courting. Phil is also long-living, being able to survive for seven more years due to a special liquid which he is fed by members of his elite club. There is only one Punxsutawney Phil, however. He has been used for offering support of political events, to rooting for area sports teams, to having a movie made of him that starred Bill Murray, and many other events to which he has lent his famous name and presence. Todays celebration which honors Phil on Feb. 2 each year attracts tens of thousands of fans from all over the world. They are as excited about viewing Phils emerging from his underground lair, as they are in viewing their favorite rock stars. The first observance of Phil is credited with a newspaper called the Punxsutawney Spirit who first recorded the appearance of the famous rodent. Throughout the years, Phil has been part and parcel of some famous events, including: *During Prohibition, Phil threatened to impose 60 more weeks of winter if he wasnt allowed a drink; *In 1958, Phil announced that it was a United States Chucknik rather than a Soviet Sputnik that circled the earth for the first time *In1981, Phil wore a yellow ribbon in honor of the American hostages in Iran; *Phil travelled to Washington D.C. in 1986 to meet with President Ronald Reagan; *Phil appeared on the Oprah Winfrey Show in 1995; *In 2001, Phils prediction was shown live on the JumboTron at Times Square in New York City. Pennsylvania Governor Ed Rendell attended the ceremonies, becoming the first governor to ever do so.

re we going to have six more

weeks of winter? Or are we going to be blessed with the beginning of Spring? Dont look to your favorite weather person, look instead to Punxsutawney Phil, your favorite rodent-like creature who has been emerging from his cubbyhole underneath the earth since 1886 when the tradition began in Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania. Punxsutawney Phil then became even more famous than even the most famous weathermen. Including Al Roker of the Today Show. The main difference is that Phil doesnt need a ton of maps and other weather devices, he simply emerges from his

hole, and, legend has it that if he sees his shadow six more weeks of frigid weather will prevail. If, however, the day is cloudy and overcast and if Phil doesnt see his shadow, Spring is just around the corner. But, lest you think that our Phil is the only groundhog who predicts the weather, youre sadly mistaken. There is also Dunkirk Dave, Shubenacadle Sam, Wharton Willie, General Beauregard Lee, Peewee the Woodchuck and Staten Island Chuck. Oh, and lets not forget Balzac Billy, also known as the Prairie Prognosticator a young upstart who hails from Alberta, Canada.

Gov. Perry: We Must Continue Working to Make Abortion a Thing of the Past
AUSTIN - Gov. Rick Perry today gave the keynote address at the annual Texas Alliance for Life Rally, highlighting his proposals for the 83rd Legislative Session to strengthen Texas' protections on life. "As supporters of life, Texas will continue to take the necessary steps to protect unborn children who are capable of feeling pain, in hopes of one day making abortion at any stage a thing of the past," Gov. Perry said. "Unfortunately abortion is the second most common surgical procedure in America, so our work to protect life is far from over. Together we will continue working to strengthen Texas' protections on life and protect the health of both women and their unborn children." Gov. Perry continues to be a strong advocate for protecting innocent life, calling on the Legislature to pass measures to ban abortions once a baby can feel pain, and strengthen standards of care for women seeking abortions, including requiring physicians who perform abortions to have admitting privileges at a hospital, and requiring abortion clinics to meet the same standards as ambulatory surgical centers. He has also signed both parental notification and parental consent laws...Continues on next page

stay and meals at the parks Sauceda bunkhouse. There will also be daily forays along the state parks 30-plusmile Rincon Loop, Chimney Rock Cut Across, Dome Loop and Contrabando trails, all of which are popular routes because of their single-track trails, vivid desert scenery, and historical points of interest. In addition, park staff has added additional rides for this years event, such as the Rock House Tour, a 21-mile course led by a park ranger that ventures off the beaten path to some of Big Bend Ranchs natural and cultural features like 100-plus-year-old ruins. And a Geo-Ride has been added, which is a self-guided geocache tour for bikers who like to use their G Water stations with drinking and potable water are located at various intervals along the trails for Bike Fest, and trained park staff and volunteers will be on hand for each ride. Even so, all riders should bring ample supplies of water, and do some advanced prep and training. Participants are encouraged to read the Gear List on the Desert Sports event website and be fully equipped before heading to Chihuahuan Desert Bike Fest: http://www.desertsportstx.com/mountain-bikeevent/suggested-gear-list/ Were telling riders to bring at least two or three liters of water per person, per day, sunscreen, and at least two selfsealing bike tubes, as a minimum, said Dan Sholly, deputy director of Texas State Parks. This country is gorgeous, but it can be unforgiving if youre not prepared. It is critical to have tubeless bike tires or self-sealing tubes. Although most of Bike Fests rides are geared for advanced mountain bike enthusiasts, the park also offers shorter, rangerled rides of 10-11 miles for strong beginner and low-intermediate level bikers who have the conditioning to ride 11 miles of relatively flat terrain. A kids ride is also scheduled for Friday and Saturday as well. While there are many challenging trails in the state park, there are also a number of double-track sections, which are great for beginning-level mountain bikers who are physically fit and equipped with appropriate gear and water, said Sholly The primary staging area for Chihuahuan Desert Bike Fest will again be the comfortable Lajitas Golf Resort and Spa, and Maverick Ranch RV Park, also in Lajitas. Both are strategically located along FM 170 near the events daily trail head start and the state parks Barton Warnock Visitor Center. Fun wont just be limited to the two-wheel variety; each evening therell be live music, swimming, hula-hoop dancing, dining in Terlingua, and other activities. Bike manufacturing / company reps will also be on hand with a fleet of demo bikes for riders to try out on the trails. In all, last year, nearly 300 riders participated in Bike Fest, and more are expected for this years event. Proceeds from Bike Fest will benefit the Big Bend Trails Alliance. Advanced reservations for all overnight accommodations are highly recommended. For more information, to view a daily schedule of event rides, or to register for the Chihuahuan Desert Bike Fest, visit www.desertsportstx.com or www.lajitasgolfresort.com.

Anniversary of El Pasos Arctic Blast

It gives me the chills every time I think back to February, 2011 in El Paso. Im sure many of you will never forget those first five days of the month.

By: Doppler Dave Speelman

I grew up in the western suburbs of Chicago and consider myself battle tested when it comes to cold weather and wind chills in the negative numbers. I remember as a teenager shoveling 10 inches of snow off garage roofs and enduring wind chills of minus 69 degrees. But two years ago here in town, I was reminded of my childhood days. It began Tuesday, February 1, when the temperature began to fall following an arctic cold front. We had just enough moisture advect into the area with enough cold air that snow began to fall. Following the snow, the streets began to get icy and the winds began to gust over 40 mph; wind chills began to drop it felt like the single digits. The TXDOT traffic cameras showed cars spinning out on the ice that night and vehicles struggling to advance up any hill. This was just the beginning of what would turn out to be a prolonged time period of intense cold air, water lines freezing, rolling power outages and frustrations from a city unprepared for weather we havent felt in nearly 50 years. Here are some of the memorable details of the storm:

Wednesday, February 2: Record El Paso low temperature that morning of 7 degrees High temp was 15 degrees a record cold high temperature Snows comes to an end midday -NE El Paso gets the brunt of the snow 6 -West side of town gets around 1 on average -Alamogordo digs out of 10 -Cloudcroft picks up 13 -Ruidoso gets 14 -Deming records 2 -Dell City comes in with 2.5 Thursday, February 3: Another record low of 0 degrees (record low in El Paso was -8 degrees on January 8, 1962) Wind Chill: -17 degrees in El Paso (record is -22 in 1962) 18 degrees was our high temp Alamogordo: -13 Cloudcroft: -20 Ruidoso: - 13 Deming: - 0 T or C: -6 Santa Teresa: -5 Friday, February 4: Record low again of 3 degrees High temperature of 37 degrees

What was the all time record low temperature set in El Paso?
A. ) B. ) C. ) D. ) 0 degrees, which recently occurred Thursday, February 3, 2011 -3 degrees -8 degrees -17 degrees
Answer: C, -8 degrees set back on January 8, 1962. We had a record wind chill of -22 that day as well.

Making a little space mean a lot: unused computer room now welcomes overnight guests.
Photo: John Ellis

Q: What to do with a really small room? I mean teeny-tiny, maybe just wide enough to wedge in a double bed. We need a guest room, but would any guest feel welcome in such a stingy little bedroom? A: If not, you should make better friends. As long as they can stretch out well enough to sleep in a space that's warm and welcoming, what more does any guest really need?
Here's an inspiring case in point: Dena Fishbein, top-shelf designer and author of "The Painted House, "and her husband Dan Fishbein used to handle their thriving design business via computers installed in this sliver of a room. Then they both got laptops, Deana writes, leaving the space underemployed. They decided to turn it into a guest room, even if there was just a quarter-inch to spare when they moved the bed in. However, no one loses sleep over the tight fit thanks to Dena's famously freehanded approach to mixing exuberant colors and patterns. The high canopy matches the pillows, which match the bed skirt, which is echoed in the throw and stenciled decorations that pack such an enormous punch of personality into the Lilliputian room. Also, please note: guests' basic comfort needs are provided for. There are light-controlling curtains at the windows, a handy table at bedside and an efficient reading lamp, all de rigueur in any guest room, however large or small. This is creative re-purposing at its best. As Dena believes, "Part of what gives a house its vitality is its evolution. If your home grows and changes with you, if it reflects both where you are and where you've been, it will better suit where you're going."

A Solution for Too Many Toys

If you have kids, you might still be trying to figure out how you're going to find room for your kids' Christmas loot. EC reader Beth has a great suggestion that will please everyone, even the kids.

Adventure Detox Travel: Where Do You Go When You Can't Go Online?

I planned it to be a vacation of firsts: my first trip to the Caribbean island of St. Lucia, my first time mountain biking through a jungle plantation and, modern girl that I am, my first digital detox. and, yes, chocolate all organic and divine, from their own Emerald Gardens. The tropical weather is also sublime even the rain feels as if it's kissing you and the beaches are pristine. Daily yoga. Hourly mojitos. Scuba, snorkeling, kayaking and, new this season, paddle boarding, which I found disturbing. for climbing if you're very fit. If you're not fit, you might exhaust yourself navigating the geometry of Jade Mountain, ingeniously devised by its ownerarchitect, Nick Troubetzkoy. It's all stairs and steps, leading to dramatic bridges and private landings, and at the very top hundreds of steps from the bottom there is a floating spaceship of a dining room, run by kind St. Lucians who are trained to say yes. My digital detox went perfectly. I was surprised. There were a few panicky moments on day one, when I realized I'd forgotten to leave an "I'm away" message on AOL, but once I fixed that, I simply let go. Love the one you're with. Listen to the birds; do a little yoga; paddle a kayak; play in the sea; stare at the patterns of light that dance across the ENERGY EXPRESS-O! HOTEL ROOM REDEFINED

BALANCED TOY INVENTORY. A family friend had a great

system that avoided too many toys no longer being played with. Their children knew that each year after their birthday and Christmas there would be a count of the new toys they received as gifts. They would then go to their rooms and find the same number of toys they no longer played with, to give away. Of the toys they picked, one could be put away and kept in a memory box. As a family, they would take the toys to a local charity where they would donate them. Doing this each year helped to keep their house less cluttered, and the kids learned a valuable lesson about making choices and allowing other children to benefit from things they had once enjoyed. Beth, email

SWEET SKIN CARE. I have a great home recipe for exfoliant that uses what I have in my pantry. I mix equal amounts of honey and cornmeal, and apply to my face, elbows and heels. It leaves my skin feeling wonderful, and it smells nice, too. Lee, email RUBBER BAND GRIP. Instead of using those rubbery disks to open jars, I simply put a rubber band or two around the lid and twist! It provides a great grip, and it's much handier than keeping one more thing in your kitchen that only serves one purpose. Mara, Michigan GRINDING THE GROUNDS. I don't purchase whole peppercorns for use in a grinder, I just fill my grinder full of regular ground black pepper. The grinds are big enough that when it's ground again, I get a fresh ground pepper taste at a fraction of the cost. It lasts a lot longer than those tiny bottles of peppercorns. Jennifer, email WRAP UP A BOUQUET GARNI. If you make soup, a bouquet garni (spices and herbs tied into a little bundle) is a wonderful thing. But instead of buying cheesecloth for this process, I wrap the herbs and spices in a coffee filter, roll it or fold it, and wrap it with string. I drop it in the soup pot and fish it out easily with a spoon when the soup is done. Jessica, email FOIL SCRUBBER. One morning, I faced a tough job cleaning
the dried-on pancake batter in a bowl. Instead of reaching for a scrub pad, I balled up a piece of used aluminum foil, and it worked perfectly to scrub the bowl clean. Brenda, Michigan

That's right; I was committing to a fun-in-the-sun week without going on the Internet or checking email, something the average person does about 60 times a day. You calling me average? Digital detox is a growth industry. There are
detox nights at bars, weekly detox camps, even detox cruises. The idea is so 2013. You disconnect from technology, face the addiction and, for a price, get coaching about effective strategies for finding balance. My strategy was simple. I would lock up my MacBook Air and iPhone in the hotel safe and resist their gravitational pull until it was time to fly back to reality. No Facebook, no Twitter, no cloud, no apps, no texting, no smarter-than-Iam phone. My hotel space I can't honestly call it a room didn't even have a TV. Where do you go when you can't go online? Could I survive? And if I did, would life be worth living? It was also my first visit to Jade Mountain, a unique collection of 24 exquisitely designed private sanctuaries overlooking the 82-degree Caribbean Sea. It's ranked as one of the finest and most luxurious hotels in the world. I got a great deal. Be happy for me.

It was his foremost desire to create a unique living experience ... to allow the onlooker to float into space and become one with ... (nature). Why? Peeking out through the bottom of my straw, I saw more than 30 paddle boarders during my arduous week on St. Lucia, and not one of them smiled. Ever. Paddle boarding may be going the way of snowboarding. Yes, it is physically possible to stand on a modified surfboard and push yourself around the sea, but why would you?
But back to Jade Mountain, where each sanctuary has its own infinity pool with a builtin system of light therapy based on ancient ayurvedic beliefs about the healing power of color. Blue, for example, is good for toxic cleansing and helps bring on physical and mental calmness; red stimulates creativity and helps activate your blood flow. At least that's the theory. I can't tell you for sure that it works, but after a week of focused relaxation in my infinity pool, my liver sent me a huge orchid plant and a new Vitamix juicer. Each Jade Mountain sanctuary comes with three walls. What does that mean? It means your private space is completely open to the outside. There is no fourth wall just like Bertolt Brecht's plays. But no one can see in. You can float naked into boundless nature. You are drawn to the 3-D view of two mountain peaks, called the Pitons, which are iconic symbols of the island and available

DEAR ABBY by Abigail Van Buren

week 1/31 - 2/06 TEACHER IS SHOCKED TO LEARN

DEAR ABBY: I am an adjunct teacher in a small college in the Midwest. For the most part, my students are great, but one breaks my heart. I admire him because he has overcome some incredible obstacles. Last year, he lost a good job and had to drop out for a time. He's back now, and when I asked about his new job, he said he runs a strip club. At first, I thought he was kidding, but he assured me he manages more than 50 ladies who, at the end of their shift, leave with their lives and their dignity. He doesn't strike me as a common street pimp and I realize he took this job to survive. I'd like to approach him outside the classroom and offer to help not just him, but his employees. I don't want to come across as a do-gooder, but I don't think this is a great career. I know this letter may make for some funny water cooler conversations, but the truth is people who get sucked into the vice trade have a hard time getting out and often come to a bad end. Do I care about my students too much, or am I being judgmental? -- WANTS TO HELP IN ILLINOIS DEAR WANTS: I think it's a little of both. You are wellmeaning, but may have jumped to some incorrect conclusions. Managers of adult entertainment clubs are not "pimps"; they are club managers. Further, just as not all prostitutes are exotic dancers, not all exotic dancers are prostitutes. Many are single women working to support themselves and their children; others may be students trying to pay for their educations. Before trying to "rescue" any of them, visit the club and see firsthand what is -- and is NOT -- going on there. If there are underage girls being forced to work there, report it to the police. If not, recognize that they are adults and able to make their own career choices. While I admire your good heart, the individuals you're worried about may not need your assistance.

Mercury, Neptune and Mars Align

The astrological aspect of this week's scene is a triple alignment of Mercury, Neptune and Mars in the early stages of Pisces. The conjunction of these planets will get us talking about our dreams with the very people who can nudge (or kick, as the case may be) them into reality. If you've been pondering the merit of your ideas, you won't have to wonder for long. The tangible proof will tell its own irrefutable story. ARIES (March 21-April 19). Author Francesca M. Cancian suggests, "Part of the reason that men seem so much less loving than women is that men's behavior is measured with a feminine ruler." Do you agree or disagree? This week it will be helpful to ponder matters of gender and work to bring harmony to male/female relationships. TAURUS (April 20-May 20). If you don't make any mistakes, you won't have any good stories. You'll also have very little to teach others, since the lessons worth learning often have to do with recovering from mistakes. So expect to make mistakes, and embrace them when they happen. Your humanity connects you with kindred souls. GEMINI (May 21-June 21). Some around you thrive on emotionally provocative situations. You don't fall into that category, so it's more challenging for you to relate to those who prefer the extreme highs and lows, but you'll try. Because you understand that everyone is different and you make an effort to empathize, an opportunity will knock. CANCER (June 22-July 22). You're not the best judge of your own maturity, skills and attributes right now. Anyway, life presents you with new roles just when you're truly ready to take them on and not a moment sooner. So even if you think you're not ready, take a chance this week, and you'll be surprised by how well you fit your new role. LEO (July 23-Aug. 22). You didn't ask to be put in charge, but it was the best way, and everyone knew it. So now you're in a position to make some choices all eyes on you, and fates seeming to hang in the balance. But don't worry. Whichever way you go, justice will prevail in the end. So make the decision, and don't look back. VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22). You are an adventurer this week, and adventures are, by definition, unpredictable. You will turn a simple outing into an adventure in one of two ways: Either you will go into the scene without a plan, or you will go into the scene with a good plan and a wily partner who is sure to keep you from following it. LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 23). By studying gifted children, scientists have concluded that these young people do not only think along more complex lines than their peers, but they also feel differently. You can relate this week, as life seems to push you into an emotional landscape that inspires a high level of awareness and sophistication from you. SCORPIO (Oct. 24-Nov. 21). You may feel that you are somewhat misunderstood, and this is really the truth: Some people don't know how to consider you. But it would be a waste of your mind to worry about such things. Instead, take a deep breath, and let yourself settle in. Once relaxed, you'll naturally gravitate toward like minds and kindred spirits. SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21). Relationships may cause you to experience moments of disequilibrium or rapid shifts in perception: a kind of emotional vertigo. Concentrate on a fixed horizon. Taking the long view will stop your mind from spinning in an unhelpful fashion. Your loved ones really do want you to be happy! CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19). You have it in you to solve a problem that plagues many. You already know what problem you most want to take on, and you are closer to the solution than you think. Now all you need is to focus and work. If your loved ones will support you by getting out of your way, you'll have the answer by the end of the week. AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18). The week brings you 10,080 minutes to use for good, to accomplish something remarkable, to make a positive impact and to change the world for the better unless you plan on eating, sleeping, showering, commuting, etc. Then you probably have somewhere around 6,000 minutes, which, used well, will be quite enough. PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20). As an emotionally open person, you know what it's like to be flooded by unexpected waves of joy. You also know what it's like to be plunged into the depths. So you go carefully and consciously, choosing friends and love interests for their dependability. You need people around you whom you can really count on. THIS WEEK'S BIRTHDAYS: The commitment you honor over the next three weeks will begin a cycle of excellent luck. When relationships are at peace, the rest of life is beautiful. So you'll focus on doing the things that add a sense of family, romance, excitement and community, and it all blends well in February and March. By April, adjustments to your professional and financial realms will be necessary. A new goal requires sacrifice; everything worth doing does. Bonus money comes in June.

ABOUT STUDENT'S NEW CAREER

** DEAR ABBY: I want to ask your opinion about something. I work at a donut shop inside a college campus. I have a tip jar, and many customers are generous and share their change with me. My problem is other people who feel entitled to the money in my tip jar. There have been instances when some of them realized they were a few cents short, so they stuck their hands in my tip jar and fished out the coins they wanted. It is not out of ignorance! The jar is clearly labeled "Tips -- Thank you." If I tell them they can't take the money, they get angry. Time Heals All Wounds

DR. WALLACE: My boyfriend and I had been dating for over five months, and I really believed that he truly was "the one." He was cute, smart and great fun to be with. He was polite and treated me with respect. So I was devastated to find that he did not have similar feelings for me. Three weeks ago, he told me he wanted to date another girl, and we would no longer be dating. and begin the healing process by keeping busy. I was shocked to think that he no longer wanted to date me, and I have never felt more depressed in my whole life. It has been impossible to forget him, and I've been spending all my time in my room studying. I can't seem to get involved in any school events and I'm feeling very sad all the time. How long will these feelings last, and how can I get over this and get my life back in order? Nameless, Toronto NAMELESS: You will recover from your broken romance, but it will take some time. Time is the healer of all wounds, both physical and emotional. I know it's hard to believe, but it's true, so you just need to stop dwelling on the breakup It's good that you have been concentrating on your schoolwork during this difficult time, but you also need to make some effort to participate in social events. Get involved in school, church or community activities that interest you. Call your girlfriends and organize fun outings with them. The worst thing you can do is to sit at home and brood over your ex-boyfriend. Please contact me in a few weeks and let me know how things are going. I know you will feel better when you become socially active again. Also, make sure to keep an open communication with your parents. Understanding, loving parents will help speed your healing process. Dr. Robert Wallace welcomes questions from readers. Although he is unable to reply to all of them individually, he will answer as many as possible in this column. Email him at rwallace@galesburg.net.

Veterinarians know money is always an issue, and theyre ready to offer wellness plans that will help you keep your pet healthy. By Dr. Marty Becker and Gina Spadafori Universal Uclick If youre trying to save money and really, who isnt? its important to understand a couple of key concepts when it comes to budgeting for pet care: 1. Its almost always less expensive to prevent health problems than to treat them. 2. Taking your pets health care expert your vet-

Take the weight off your pet. Extra pounds increase the likelihood of serious health problems, such as arthritis, diabetes and cancer in pets just as they do in people. And yet few people recognize when their pet is overweight or even grossly obese! If your pet is normal weight (you should be able to feel his ribs), measuring food,

keeping treats to a minimum and working in a daily exercise session will keep him that way. If your pet is overweight, get your veterinarians help to reduce weight slowly to avoid the health risks of sudden weight loss, especially in cats.

buying the largest bags of food or litter, or get case discounts on canned goods. Split your dry food purchases with family or a friend, and store portions in an airtight container. (Do keep product info from the bag, though, in case there are questions or problems.) Other purchases should be considered carefully. Replace things such as collars when wear first shows you dont want a collar to break and your dog to get loose in a dangerous situation. Buy quality, not silliness: One good collar is a better value than a lot of shoddy but cute ones. Both over-the-counter and prescription medications are also a danger, and these are best dealt with by putting them behind cupboard doors. Dont be shy about asking your veterinarian to work with you on keeping costs down. For example, ask your veterinarian to give you prescriptions for medications to be filled elsewhere or to match prices. Comparison shopping for medications may offer considerable savings, especially if there are generic equivalents available. We also recommend looking into pet health insurance, because no pet lover wants to say no to a pet who can be saved because the money isnt there for the care. Because plans differ, do your research before buying to make sure the most likely health problems of your pet are covered. Talk to your veterinarian, and youll get even more good advice.

A Room Designed to Inspire a Writer

By Rose Bennett Gilbert

Novel Idea?
Q: OK, I am finally going to sit down and write a book about my travels in the
Far East after college 15 years ago. To make it "official," I am turning a small guest room into my writing room. My husband is offering to paint it "something inspirational." I love bright colors, but would that be distracting in the long run?

A: Congratulations on taking the first step toward your book ambitions. As all writers know (including this one), the true secret of success is putting the seat of the pants in the seat of the chair, every day for a set number of hours.
It's like a job. What am I saying? It is a job! And to make the work more enjoyable, you'd be wise to make that writing

room as inviting and comfortable as possible. Which means, if bright colors will inspire you, by all means, go bright. In fact, given the subject of your project, you might even go for the idea artist Chuck Fischer expressed all over the walls of the writing room he designed for this year's Kips Bay Decorator Show House. Forget Matchy-Matchy Cabinets, Too!

By Rose Bennett Gilbert

Dcor Score...
Continued from page 2 A muralist and trompe l'oeil master (who specializes in astonishing pop-up books), Chuck painted chinoiserie motifs floor-to-ceiling on warm, glowing orange walls. Of course, Chuck is an acclaimed professional artist, but you might interpret his idea, using stencils or blown-up photocopies of traditional chinoiserie motifs.

Q: The cabinets in our new (renovated)

kitchen are off-white with raised panel doors. Do we have to make the center island white, too, or is it okay to use a different color or a wood-tone? I guess anything goes with white, right?

cluding the brick floor, ceramic tile splash back and countertops made of Carrara marble and soapstone.

A: You are right-on about white. It's almost always right, if a little monotonous walk into half the kitchens in this country, and you'll find cabinets painted white or some variation thereof. OK, that makes sense on the one hand: white signals clean. It also reflects light and creates the illusion that your space is larger than it really is. On the other hand, white can look sterile, boring, been-there-done-that. Which is why top kitchen designers advocate mixing colors when it comes to the center work island. That's especially true when you're dealing with a large space, says Tad Troilo, a CKD

Special treatment makes a center island the center of attention in a large newly built kitchen. Photo: Tom Grimes (Certified Kitchen Designer) who designed this high, wide and handsome kitchen for a client who happens to be an interior designer herself and knew just how she wanted the space to look and work. For example, she asked for natural materials, in-

"In a large kitchen like this, you want to break up the cabinet finish by using a different color or finish on the center island," Tad explains. The cabinets he laid out around the perimeter of the room are all clean white and traditional in design, including Evoke your muse in a writing room warmed by orange-sherbet the "mantel" that overwalls and painted chinoiserie motifs. Photo courtesy of Hunter Douglas arches the cook top. Then he used a darker, painted finish on the large center island, making it both the center of attention and the center of activity in the kitchen. (All the cabinetry, including that imposing mantel-style hood, was custom-made by Wood Mode, woodmode.com. To see more of Tad's talent, go to cranmerskitchens.com.)

Two other ideas to, ahem, plagiarize for your own writing room: the simple desk set-up this room means business! And the effective light-and view-control at the windows, thanks to the tailored Roman shade (Vignette by Hunter Douglas, www.hunterdouglas.com), hung under a valance Chuck also hand-painted to match. See more of the artist's oeuvre at www.chuckfischer.com. Rose Bennett Gilbert is the co-author of "Manhattan Style" and six other books on interior design.

"Nick is one of the most versatile producers I know ... taking everything from house to drum and bass to moombahton and putting his own forward-thinking spin on it. Not genre bound, just music bound." Skrillex In his own words, Nick Thayer might be best described as "the musical equivalent of putting seven glowsticks in a blender". As renowned for uninhibited and unashamedly eclectic DJ sets as he is for impeccable production, Nicks cut-loose mentality is his trademark both in the club and in the studio. I dont care about genres. Good music is good music, he says. You could put this unbound attitude down to his classically trained background, his stint in grunge and funk bands or even his lifelong love of hair rock. Whatever it is, one things certain: Nick Thayer was made for this. A hugely successful AV show in conjunction with visual artist sevenmilligram is another very special trick up Nick's sleeve. This show is like no other; it's a complete assault on the senses and needs to be seen to be believed. Following on from his 2010 album Just Let It Go - which was nominated for Best Electronic Album at the Australian Independent Music Awards then in 2012 Nick signed to Skrillex's OWSLA label with the Like Boom EP . The result is worth the wait; showing scant regard for genres or tempos, or even accepted notions of what club music should be, it promises to rip sound systems apart. If thats not enough for you wait for 2013

have to have great drivers to win in NASCAR, and in the past year weve been able to secure long-term deals with Kyle and Denny [Hamlin] and of course we were able to add Matt [Kenseth] as well. Kyle is a big part of our success at JGR and were thrilled to know he will be with us for a long time. Busch, who drove for both Roush Fenway Racing and Hendrick Motorsports earlier in his career, said he looked around and decided that staying with Gibbs was his best opportunity. I did have options, which was awesome, he said. I just felt like this was the best place for me. Ive been here for a while now. Busch said the lineup of drivers and crew chiefs at Gibbs weighed heavily in his decision. It just shows nothing but positive growth over here for this organization, he said. At Roush Fenway Racing, team co-owner Jack Roush said he hoped to put Trevor Bayne in a full-time Sprint Cup ride in 2014. Bayne, who is set to run a full Nationwide Series campaign for Roush this season, already runs a limited Cup schedule in the Wood Brothers No. 21 Ford. He won the Daytona 500 in that car in 2011. Roush said Baynes move to a full-time Cup ride will require more sponsorship and continued improved performance by Bayne. There were plenty of sponsor-related announcements last week, most of them involving existing sponsors continuing their relationships, plus a few new spon-

His team owner Rick Hendrick said hes not concerned and is waiting to sign a backer with the best longterm prospects. Hendrick also announced that his youngest driver, Chase Elliott, will run five ARCA and nine Camping World Truck Series races under the Hendrick banner. Elliott, the 17-year-old son of former Sprint Cup champion Bill Elliott, is in position to take over one of Hendricks four Cup cars, if and when one of the current drivers retires. Jeff Gordon, at age 41, appears the most likely candidate for retirement at some point in the not-too-distant future. He talked about his plans last week, telling reporters that he doesnt intend to compete into his 50s as many of his peers have done. NASCAR officials discussed a new track-drying system that is billed as quicker than the keroseneburning jet dryers now in use and more environmentally friendly. Continues on page 19

sors joining the sport. Hertz was among them, announcing that it was teaming with Penske Racing to back cars in both the Cup and Nationwide Series. Cessna also announced that it would be sponsoring Jamie McMurrays No. 1 Chevrolet at Ganassi Racing for 10 races this season, joining McDonalds, Dr. Pepper and Bass Pro Shops. There also was confirmation that the sports most popular driver, Dale Earnhardt Jr., has 13 unsponsored races at this point.

ASCARs annual media tour, held each year in Charlotte, N.C. prior to the start of Speedweeks in Daytona, usually generates off-season news as teams and NASCAR wait for the tour to make any official announcements concerning the upcoming season. This years tour, held last week, was no different, except that some of the biggest news came the day after the tour ended when Danica Patrick and Ricky Stenhouse Jr. confirmed to the Associated Press that they were dating each other. It had been rumored for weeks that Patrick, who announced last fall that she was divorcing her husband, Paul Hospenthal, and Stenhouse, the two-time and defending Nationwide Series champion, were romantically involved. Stenhouse, who will face Patrick in the Sprint Cup circuits Rookie of the Year con-

test this season, was questioned about their relationship during the media tour but offered little insight. The two spoke with the AP the next day and insisted that their off-track relationship wont affect the way they race each other on the track. Stenhouse, 25, is moving up to Cup to drive the No. 17 Ford at Roush Fenway Racing. Patrick, 30, will drive the No. 10 Chevrolet for StewartHaas Racing. On the tour, Joe Gibbs Racing announced that it had signed Kyle Busch to a long-term contract extension. Gibbs also will field the No. 54 Toyota in the Nationwide Series with Busch as its primary driver. Busch, for the most part, raced his own car in the Nationwide Series last year, but without the success hes had in Gibbs cars in the past. This is a big deal for us, JGR President J.D. Gibbs said. All new Acura RDX is more mature, appealing

Sometimes you just have to grow up. Darn it. The last Acura RDX was like that little kid that hadnt quite reached maturity just yet and still knew how to have a lot of fun. With its turbocharged fourcylinder engine and Super Handling All-Wheel Drive system (SH-AWD), I had an emotional bond to the little Acura. It was fast and fun to drive with its little spirited motor, and the SHAWD made it act and feel like a sports car yet it was still an SUV. Unfortunately, those are not the right ingredients to compete in the compact luxury SUV market as the RDX never caught on like its MDX big brother did. So Acura took notice and for 2013 we have an all new RDX one that may not be as fun and exciting as the previous one, but overall is a better vehicle. The new RDX looks clean and chiseled, much like the original and easily fits along the other Acuras in the luxury makers lineup. And while it appears quite a bit bigger in nearly every direction, its only an inch larger than the model it replaces. The interior of the new RDX gains a big boost both in space and in features. First, its a lot roomier, especially for backseat passengers. It seats five comfortably, and all come equipped with leather interior, sunroof, and a dual-zone climate control system. Up front, the seats are nicely supported, and like other Acura vehicles, there are a good number of buttons on the center stack so some quality time with the owners manual is highly recommended. Things are spiced up a bit with the two-tone dash and the use of higher quality materials. Opt for the Technology Package like the tester had and the interior gets an easy-to-use navigation system/rear-view camera and an Acura/ELS Surround Sound system. In terms of cargo capacity, the RDX provides 26 cubic feet of storage behind the rear seats; fold the 60/40 seats and that jumps to 61 cubic feet. But where the RDX really matured is under the hood. Gone is the turbo four-cylinder and in its place is Acuras naturally aspirated 3.5 liter V6. Horsepower goes up from 240 horses to 273 but torque falls by 9 lb-ft to 251. The end result is a slight improvement in the 0-60 times (by .2 seconds) while fuel By The Numbers: economy increases by 1 to 2 mpg in the city and 4 to 5 mpg on the highway. A six-speed automatic is the only transmission available. Another change is in the optional all-wheel drive system. Booted out was the sophisticated SH-AWD, and in its place is the one from Hondas CR-V. Acura says this system is lighter and cost less than the outgoing SH-AWD. With the roomier interior, larger engine and a revised all-wheel drive system, the new RDX is now more of an SUV and less of a sports car. I cant say the new engine makes the RDX a stronger performer, but it most definitely provides a smoother and more linear response than the old turbocharged engine. And the increase in fuel economy, which is achieved by cylinder deactivation, where the system can shut down two or three cylinders while cruising under light loads - is a nice welcome. When the roads get twisty, the new RDX isnt quite as much fun. Oh, it handles just fine. But where the old RDX ate up curves with grace and etched a smile in the drivers face, the new RDX merely strolls through them, albeit with confidence. And just like the old one, being all-wheel drive doesnt give the RDX a free pass to go off-road - with a

fairly low ground clearance, its best to keep the RDX on the road. Though the new Acura RDX loses some sporty flavor in terms of handling capabilities, it gains significantly more in the way of ride refinement, cabin ambience and overall luxury features. And that is what will make the new RDX capture a broader audience.

Harvick leaving RCR after 2013

During the NASCAR media tour stop at Richard Childress Racing in Welcome, N.C., team owner Richard Childress confirmed that Kevin Harvick, driver of the No. 29 Chevrolet, indeed is leaving after this year to drive a fourth car at Stewart-Haas Racing. Childress told reporters that Harvick will do well over there at Stewart-Haas, and RCR will keep going and moving forward. Childress grandson Austin Dillon, now a fulltime Nationwide Series driver, is set to run several Cup races this season and is viewed as a likely replacement for Harvick.

Media Tour...
Continued from page 17 Drying the track after a rain has been a painfully slow process in the past, as the process can take up to two hours at most tracks, making for a long wait for fans at the track and watching on TV. The goal is to improve it by 80 percent, NASCAR chairman Brian France said. So that means if were drying Daytona off, where it usually took two and a half hours, we get it down to 30 minutes. And France said that with the new system theyre close to meeting his goal.

Were going to be able to dry Martinsville off in 15 minutes, he said. Its going to be a spectacular thing, and all auto racing will benefit from this as we go down the road. The new system, which NASCAR owns the rights to, relies on compressed air and heat, plus some vacuuming, to dry the track. The old jet dryers, supplied by the tracks, used the heat from jet engines to blow water off the track as well as dry it. NASCAR officials also praised the work that has been done on the Generation 6 race car that will make its competitive debut next month at Daytona International Speedway. The collaborative efforts between the manufacturers, teams and NASCAR has been unparalleled in my 34-plus years in the sport, said NASCARs vice president for competition Robin Pemberton. Weve been highly encouraged by the results that weve seen at the tests at Daytona and Charlotte earlier this month, and are optimistic that not only will the cars look great, we believe they will race great I really believe were going to see some of the most competitive, intense and exciting racing that weve seen in quite some time.
