Assuring Communications for Aircraft Navigation Using RAD Multiplexers

Typical Users Air controllers and aviation authorities

Air traffic control authorities responsible for coordinating aircraft navigation across and beyond a particular country's territory face a particular challenge when they have to upgrade the telecommunications network that connects a number of different airports under their jurisdiction. Air traffic control relies on a unique mix of services. Direct speech for airport-to-airport voice communication uses conventional telephone switching, while TTY messages depend on Telex switching. Radar requires a one-way low speed connection from the source to air traffic control. Communications from the airport to the aircraft is transmitted over extended range VHF, while data is sent over VDL (a low-speed VHL data link). For obvious safety reasons, redundancy is a critical component for airport communications. RAD's Megaplex-2100 multiservice access multiplexer is a key element in providing mission critical voice, data and Ethernet connectivity among multiple airports under the responsibility of the same air traffic control authority. An integrated access platform, the Megaplex-2100 simplifies network architecture and management by allowing traffic from multiple airports to be connected to a grid via selected hub sites. The Megaplex-2100 is a single-box solution designed to groom, aggregate and transport multiple broadband and narrowband data and voice services over copper, DSL, fiber, wireless, or satellite circuits. Supporting an optional Ethernet main link and incorporating industry-standard pseudowire technology, the Megaplex-2100 also enables TDM transport (40 E1, 50 T1) over a 100 Mbps fiber ring or daisy-chain topology with under 50 ms restoration capabilities.

Typical Applications Routing voice and critical data between multiple airports while simplifying network architecture
