Introduction

There were many aspects of the Muslim Jewish London Roots project that enticed me to apply for the project, but one of the best additions in my opinion was the partnership between Faith Regen and the Jewish Museum. The museum is amazing, following its renovation, and I really enjoyed our first session there! It was an exciting introduction to the history of Jews in Britain and using the resources that the museum has, was a great addition to just listening about it. The lady from the museum began by looking at the similarities of Islam and Judaism, using various artefacts connected to different aspects of faith, such as; prayer, dietary laws, clothing etc. and she engaged the group in a conversation about it, making us really begin to understand the parallels between the two religions. Utilising only one floor of the museum, we were able to walk through a timeline of Jewish immigration to Britain starting from the medieval ages, through to the modern day. It was interesting to explore how and why the persecution of Jews has been prevalent in society for as long as history has been recorded. For example, it used to be that Christians could play no role in money handling or lending and so Jews adopted jobs like taxmen, and that is where the stereotypes of Jews and money originated from. I particularly enjoyed the use of art and propaganda to explore this. I cannot wait for the next session with the Jewish museum, as well as all the other exciting days that the project has to offer!
