Editorial Exhaust
Despite what would be normally thought of as the off-season, it's been quite busy for me in the 8 weeks since the end of the holidays. I've been busy with Shannonville, fun laps at the driving schools, karting, and the Link. On top of the usual monthly work on the Link, I've also gone back and created web versions of all Links going back August 2000. The details on how the web versions will be available continue to be worked out, but I have high hopes that it will replace some of the copies sent through the postal service. This will have many benefits, such as allowing full color for the web version, cheaper distribution, and immediate availability instead of the 2 to 3 days it now takes to print the finished Link. I signed up to be the registrar for the Shannonville Lapping Weekend this year. This is the first time that MCO has used an electronic sign up method (Rob Microys has his hands full with the work he's been putting in on the MCO web pages!), and it seemed to work very well indeed. We filled all 80 seats in about 7 weeks. I believe that's faster than the previous lapping event back in 1999. There is still a lot of paper work, mostly involving matching cheques to the corresponding electronic form, but it's far from overwhelming. I'll be attending the school as a student as well, and I can't wait; it's still about 11 weeks away. It will be my first time on the track, my previous experience being limited to Solo-II and indoor karting. This year I'll be using R-compound tires for the Solo season, and will get to work them a little harder at Shannonville. This winter season I've also been part of the MCO Indoor Karting League. Alas, the series will be cut short. The March 13th event will be the fourth and last, as Capital Karting will be closing after March 16th. It has been a lot of fun, close racing. It was noted on the MCO mailing list that for the first event only 2 tenths of a second separated the 42-lap average of 2nd through 6th place. -r.

Ice Extravaganza!
by Rob Microys
This year's Winter Solo II program was met with great success, especially with this winter offering continuously cold temperatures and only two mild periods with rain. Bennett's and Steve Shaw's work on the track kept it plowed, clear and smooth. This, combined with a skid grooming device that packs down the loose snow, provided a superb surface for all of the events. Even Mother Nature, with her mysterious workings, laid down a solid base for us at the beginning of the program with the seasons first thaw. We were impressed with the facilities, ranted about the quality of the ice, and the cheered the superb course design. We had three Solo II events on this surface all of which provided both fast and slippery sections. The competitors were having a blast. Even the turnout was great despite the fact that most of our events were conflicting with the Yokohama Winter Rally Series. It was

looking like the winter was treating us really well until it happenedthe largest rainfall of the winter! The track was flooded - definitely a potential disaster. In fact, the entire weekend's activities had to be canceled, as there was just too much water on the track. We were worried that the thin base of ice which we were trying hard to maintain would be melted away, but here's where it all turns out for the best. We returned the following weekend to an ice-racing track whose ice quality would rival that of a world-class rink made by a Zamboni! The hard snow banks actually allowed the water to accumulate on the track around its entire length. There was not a blade of grass to be seen. Even the slight rise at the back of the track, which is normally bare, remained locked in a sheet of ice. The last event was held on the slipperiest surface that you may have ever had an opportunity to drive on - Lord knows, it was hard enough standing on this stuff let alone driving on it! We figure that a person with

ice skates on could have completed the Solo March 2001 II course from the last event faster than that of the quickest car. It was a sight to see. By the end of the series we had 39 competitors participate in the four Solo II events. It was the largest annual turnout since we have been at Capital City Speedway. I'd like to thank Bennett Leckie and Steve Shaw for the great work that they put in maintaining the track! Also, thanks go out to Adam for coming out and running two of the events. Thanks to all the participants for hauling their butts out of bed too, some of those mornings got a little cold. Soon it will be summer, and we'll start another series all over again in the mean time, keep the shiny side up.

MCO Team competes in the 2001 Yokohama Winter Rally Series

Steve Greiner and Nick Berry in the YWRS By Steve Greiner
Nick Berry and I competed in the 2001 Yokohama Winter Rally series as novice competitors. We contended in the only truck of the series against thirty other novice teams in my venerable and much abused 1986 F150 4x4 tow vehicle. Nick managed to finish 6th overall in Novice Navigator, and I managed to finish 8th overall in Novice Driver. We also finished 3rd in class in Saturday night's closely fought Ontario Winter Rally event, the final event of the series. "Coolant was running down the inside of the windshield!" The first event was the Rallye des Neiges out of Hawkesbury, taking place from January 20th to the 21st. We battled a broken thermostat and leaky heater core to finish 11th place out of 30 in the Novice class. Although we did not get lost, we could not figure out how to use the Rally computer correctly and were early for almost all of the legs in the first two sections. At 4 am, inspiration hit Nick, and we started to sort it out. It turns out that Nick was thinking in miles per hour, not kilometers per hour! All of a sudden he would tell me to run at 100 km/h, so I would promptly mash the gas pedal and away we'd go; exciting to say the least. Unfortunately exhaustion, glycol fumes, and intense cold were starting to get the better of us. Because of this, we couldn't move up the rankings by much. By the end of the event, coolant was running down the inside of the windshield and everything in the truck was damp and cold. It turns out a set of GM keys has fallen into the dash vents in the distant past and worn a hole through the heater core. Apparently this is a known problem with Ford trucks

"On the first pull the hook he used stretched wide open." Raring to go in Peterborough at the Snowy Safari Rally on February 3rd to 4th, we managed to go off the road on the 1st leg of the first section. It turns out what I thought was a twolane road was in fact only a one-lane road with major over-plow. Our 4500lb truck broke through 5 inches of ice and fell into a really deep ditch. After climbing from the window, I realized that I couldn't see the wheels of the truck--they were completely buried! On top of all this I had sliced my thumb which bled profusely for most of the event. I managed to get blood on just about everything in the truck! After two hours we were finally freed by the CAA, as the two series sweep trucks could not get us out. The CAA driver had to pull us up a 45cm wall of ice and on the first pull the hook he used stretched wide open! We got maximum lateness for the first Section, but they let us continue. We finished 25th out of 30 in Novice. In Section 2 we managed a 7th, and in Section 3 we managed a 6th "When I slammed my door in frustration, the driver's side mirror fell off!" There were also two events out of Kingston this past weekend. We had a rocky start in the Frost Bite Rally, the first event on Friday the 16th, and were running in 8th place at the end of the first section. It was very challenging to keep up to the average speeds in some sections--as much as 72 km/h! Imagine driving to a cottage on the back roads at 100 km/h and you get the idea. We were moving up in the second section when, at about 4 am, I misjudged an icy curve only a couple of kilometers from the end of the Section. I went off the road, narrowly missing a tree. I pushed in Nick's side of the truck, and when I slammed my door in frustration the driver's side mirror fell off! This time the sweep vehicle got us out but we were 25 minutes too late to the last checkpoint of the section and were DNF'd.

MCO team finishes 3rd in Novice at the Ontario Winter Rally on February 17th !!! The second event of the combined weekend, the Ontario Winter Rally on Saturday the 17th was more of the same excitement and speed. I was chanting the mantra "no mistakes, no mistakes" the whole time. I absolutely did not want a repeat of the last couple of events. Some of the Legs were the same as Friday's event, and I felt comfortable on the twisty roads around Westport. At some point during the wee hours of the morning, we began to notice a disconcerting noise coming from the front passenger-side fender on the really tight right hand turns. During an inspection after the event, we noticed that the right front spring had collapsed. In spite of the damage we managed 7th in the first Section, 6th in the 2nd Section, and with only 3.8 points against us, 1st in the last Section, for a combined total of about 19 points. We received a third place and were completely floored by our finishing result, especially after such an exhausting event. "some of the most challenging roads in Eastern Ontario and South Western Quebec" These events are by far the most entertaining thing I have done in a long time. For those of you that don't know, the Yokohama Winter Rally Series is made up of four events. The ( TDS ) Time Distance Speed rallies are between 400km and 550km, and are run at night on some of the most challenging roads in Eastern Ontario and South Western Quebec. You can compete in ordinary street cars, and the only required piece of equipment is an orange safety triangle. I strongly recommend that you try it out. A big thanks to the MCO team of Jim Morrow and Jaak Laan for helping us figure out that damned rally computer, and congratulations on your podium finish in the series championship!

Earnhardt
We Say Goodbye to a Racing Legend

by Stephen Bolt
As many of you may have heard, the world of Motorsports has said goodbye to racing legend Dale Earnhardt. Tragedy struck on February 18th, during his final lap at the Daytona 500. Earnhardt was killed instantly when he hit the retaining wall at full speed while protecting the position of Michael Waltrip and Dale Jr, who were driving cars owned by Dale Sr. This has proven a strong reminder to drivers of all ages that to drive at the limit is to live at the limit, and this is something that Earnhardt proved time and time again. "This is understandably the hardest announcement I've ever had to make. We've lost Dale Earnhardt." Forty-nine years, 76 wins, seven Winston Cup championships reduced to four words: We've lost Dale Earnhardt. - NASCAR president Mike Helton quoted from www.cnn.com

Known as 'The Intimidator', Earnhardt was once quoted as saying "Get the hell out of the race car if you've got feathers on your butt." Evidently his ability to tackle fear lead to a legendary racing career. When fans think of Nascar Legends, just two names come to mind: Richard Petty and of course, Dale Earnhardt. To this end, Dale's victories are a huge accomplishment. "All 76 of Earnhardt's triumphs came after the [NASCAR] circuit was reorganized and significantly streamlined, meaning, in theory at least, he was assured of competing against the best each and every time out." - Joe Macenka, Turner Sports Interactive from www.nascar.com Dale is survived by his son, Dale Jr., three other children and his wife. His energy and enthusiasm will live on in motorsports fans from years to come. For many, the number 3 car will be remembered as a force to be reckoned with, piloted by a driver with passion and commitment.

For more information, check out http://www.nascar.com/DRIVERS /winston/DEarnhar00/tribute/index .html References:www.cnn.com, www.nascar.com Editor Note: It is an especially talented person that can push a 700hp-racer vehicle to 200mph for 500 miles. Dale did that and won over and over again in a remarkable career. I had not previously watched much NASCAR coverage, but it was through an MCO member that I recently got the opportunity to watch Earnhardt display his skills. I had tuned in to watch Jim Holtom at the Rolex 24 Hours of Daytona, but alas, saw little of the Porsche because of the media coverage of Earnhardt (and his son) in the Corvette. Earnhardt seemed to enjoy himself during the race, even in the rain, a new element from the normally dry NASCAR race conditions. However, after the 24 Hours of Daytona, it was only 3 weeks before he lost his life at the same track. Despite being one of the older drivers on the NASCAR circuit, there was nothing fading in his career, and was more than able to take up the challenge of new racing series. More than the past was lost at the Daytona this year, it was a future too. -r.

Solo-II Report
by Chris Holmsten
Last month, the Solo II organizers meeting was held on the 17th. Anyone interested in helping out with Solo II was there as this was basically a debate and plan session. The meeting went extremely well, with a final schedule made and duties assigned to volunteers. Issues discussed included the condition of equipment, track status, and worker incentives. As a result, a budget was drawn up for the new equipment needed (No more timing problems I hope!) We still don't have a response from Alcatel whether we can use their lot or not. Please keep your eyes open around town, if Alcatel says no, a lot will need to be found quickly. You can now pre-register for the whole season ($150) as well as for one of the schools at the club's website.

The following lucky people have volunteered for these jobs: -Chief Scrutineer : Pat Weightman -Chief Timekeepers : Richard Muise Gord Acorn Rob Microys Mark Wilson -Scoring and Classification: Rob Microys - Chief Organizer : Chris Holmsten - Chief Registar : Chris Holmsten - Clerk of the Course: Chris Holmsten Ten events are to be run this year as well as two summer schools and a test and tune day. If anyone would like to help out or can suggest a new lot, please contact me at finnlog@netcom.ca.

Here is the schedule:

THE PRESIDENT'S REPORT

by Ron Woltman
So little time - so much to report. Elsewhere in this issue, you will find details concerning our winter driving skid schools. They were remarkably successful as Nigel points out. And I echo his thanks to all of the team involved in this effort which really makes a meaningful contribution to the community. Well done to a great group of individuals. Let me add one item, that is, what a boon to have a web site (with all the information) and have the capacity to register on line! Makes the job of an organizer so much easier. A tip of the fedora to Rob Microys -- master of the web. We did ask for, and receive feedback, strangely enough! The feedback was unabashedly positive. Two areas of concern were noted, however: one, the lack of a classroom/washroom facility on site; two, the lack of nearby eating establishments. Concerning the former, the executive will review possible alternatives; the latter can be addressed perhaps by having a catering truck on site etc. One aside on that issue is that I am taken to understand that Penny Bell, the owner of Capital City Speedway, is contemplating opening the restaurant out front on the highway year round. See what you get when you read City WOMAN magazine!

Trophies, points and awards! As you may recall, I initiated a committee to review our worker point system, volunteerism and awarding of trophies. Thus far, the solitary 'trend' the committee has highlighted, is the awarding of The Driver of the Year award and other like competitivebased awards. The initial take, supported by some member feedback, is those awards, most particularly the Driver of the Year, should be solely merit-based, and not require xnumber of worker points; other than perhaps a contribution to the 'betterment' of the club. Moreover, we have had some suggestions concerning members' contributions towards club activities etc., and the appropriate recognition and reward of same. Most every volunteer organization is faced with similar issues of worker recognition and retention in this day-and-age of 'me-ism'. A few individuals have proffered the suggestion of a system with more concrete remuneration, in addition to a certificate or trophy. For example, worker points could be tied to a pre-determined number of 'bonus bucks' which could be applied to a reduction in your membership renewal; tee-shirts, jackets, pins and other recognition paraphernalia be handed out etc.

However, we need more input. To that end, in your next Link, you will find a survey/questionnaire. PLEASE RESPOND. Your views are important. As well, I need another individual to come forward to lead or chair the committee, as Mike Lowe is occupied with the 50th Anniversary book. AUTORAMA. Scheduled for April 6, 7, and 8. Need some volunteers to help. I will coordinate, but I want someone to be 'hands-on.' SEE ME. Guest Speakers. I have arranged for one for tonight's meeting - ShannonLee Mannion, writer for the WHEELS section of the Ottawa Citizen. And a neat surprise speaker for next month. Suggestions are always welcome for guest speakers or entertainment. See your executive. We are here for YOU.

MORTIMER MUTTERINGS
by Nigel Mortimer
We have now completed the winter driving school for 2001. It has been an incredible success on all fronts. Due to the weather and media activity we have trained approximately 130 persons, all of whom raved about the quality of the school. The profit to the club has been substantial and as members you all get to benefit from the extreme effort of a few souls. This was definitely "our finest hour" and a huge debt is owed to these individuals. This is what makes our club great! As the chief instructor I would like to thank the following persons, without whom we could not have done it: Ron Woltman, who was the chief organizer and an instructor. The complexity of booking the students was enormous and Ron carried it off to perfection. This takes hundreds of hours of dedication and perseverance. Bennett Leckie, who engineered a highly efficient track grooming skid and prepared the track to perfection. His task was especially daunting due to the frequent use of the track and the many snow falls. Bennett was also an instructor. The other instructors showed incredible patience, perseverance and dedication. These people included: Bob Armstrong, Len Clue, Jeremy Hamilton, Jaak Laan, Sam Mandia, Robert Microys, Adam Mortimer, Roger Picard, Chris Swinwood, Paul Swinwood, and Ferdinand Trattmansdorff. Our incredibly hardy helpers extricated stuck vehicles and set up the various course exercises. These people include: Allan Pepper, Jim Morrow, Ryan Woltman, Gord Acorn, Jean MacGillivray, Herb Henning, Bill Henning, and Rob Microys. Last but certainly not least is our intrepid snow plower, Steve Shaw. He made us the best track layout we have ever had! The word "Thanks" just doesn't seem enough for all of your work!

Advanced Drivers Group

Greetings Drivers, We had great weather, great drivers, and great fun at both the May and September events last year. Thank you to all who participated, and hopefully you will be able to join us again this year. We also encourage everyone to pass on information about ADG to other motorsports associations and drivers. For our group to remain viable, it is necessary that we continuously search for new members to re-place those who, for one reason or another, no longer attend. Active recruiting by our participants has always been our main source of new enrollment and we hope that this will continue. Spread the good word mates!

Qualifications:
Participation in ADG Events is an invitation only to drivers who have attended a performance driving/racing school and/or have extensive track experience.

Rates:
Keener's Rate: register for either event by Apr.1, 2001 $175. per event Regular Rate: register for May event by April 13, 2001 or register for the Sept. event by Aug. 17, 2001 $200. per event Late Rate: register for either event less than four weeks before $225. per event Gate Rate: register at the track cash only $250. per event Additional Driver Rate: (same vehicle) $100. per driver per event Note: Enrollment is limited so register early.

Rules:
Our rules are simple: *Pass only in designated areas and only when signaled (by the car you are passing) *Do not dice, duel, race, or tailgate *Yield to faster cars *Obey the flaggers *Assume complete responsibility for having your vehicle in safe, track ready condition Failure to obey any of the above rules will earn you a black flag and a chat. Three black flags and your day is over. We also frown on off-track excursions; two of these and, unless there are mitigating circumstances, your day is over.

ADVANCED DRIVER GROUP:

We have been running Advanced Driver Improvement Days at Shannonville since 1992. Shannonville is an excellent facility to run controlled lapping events as it is both technically challenging and very safe. The main purpose of ADVANCED DRIVER GROUP is to provide drivers who already know the basics of high speed track-driving unlimited seat time. This both improves their skills and allows them to fully enjoy their sport. To this end we run an open track with no groups for the full day. Each driver is free to come and go on the track at will and participants have no corner working or flagging duties. Unlike traditional motorsport club events, ADG Events are completely non-competitive. Participants drive at their own comfort level and, because there is no pressure to compete, can push themselves and their cars as long as it is safe and enjoyable. For this reason, our type of event is usually less stressful on both driver and vehicle than either slalom or time trials.

2001 Schedule:
ADG is pleased to announce 2 confirmed events for 2001. We have booked the full track (4 kms., 14 corners) at Shannonville Motorsport Park for Friday, May 11, and Friday Sept. 14. An additional event may materialize at Le Circuit, Mont Tremblant with another track group. This is yet to be confirmed.
