Raleigh Area Flute Association - Review and Contest Guidelines

Highland United Methodist, 1901 Ridge Road, Raleigh November 4th, 2012 2 p.m. 6 p.m.
PURPOSE: The Review and Contest is an annual event sponsored by RAFA to further the education of flutists in the area. It is an opportunity for flutists of all levels of playing ability to perform for professionals who provide them with written comments concerning strengths and weaknesses. ELIGIBILITY: Participants may enter the Review, Adult Review, or Contest. All participants and their teachers (for grade 12 and younger) must have current RAFA membership. Registration and dues may be paid together. Teachers whose students are entering the Review and Contest must participate on the day of the contest or send a substitute. Teachers may volunteer as judges, monitors, or in another capacity. REVIEW and ADULT REVIEW: Participants choosing to enter Review or Adult Review perform two pieces for written evaluation of ability and performance. This is an excellent tool for individual growth and preparation for future contests. Participants of the Review are not eligible for scholarships. CONTEST: Student members of RAFA may enter the Contest. Students are considered eligible for the contest if they attend elementary, middle, or high school, or are at least half-time students in college or graduate school. Contestants will perform two pieces for a written evaluation of ability and performance and will compete against other flutists at the same level. Contest winners will receive a prize of scholarship money and will perform at the winners recital. 1. 2. 3. 4. Within a division, students will be grouped as follows: elementary (grade five and below), grades six through twelve, college (divided undergraduate and graduate). Winners will be declared for each four to six participants; some divisions will have multiple winners. No winner may be declared for a division at the judges discretion. All winners will be expected to perform at the CONTEST WINNERS RECITAL ON SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 10TH, 2012, during the annual Flute Fair, at times to be announced. Note: The scholarships will be awarded at that time. Previous winners must advance to the next division.

DIVISIONS: There are eight divisions of increasingly difficult music. Participants may perform in the division appropriate to their abilities regardless of age or length of study. MUSIC: Each division contains one mandatory piece which all participants in that division are required to perform. The required piece is listed first and in bold print on the Music List. Participants perform a second piece of their choice from the remaining list. The publishers and editions specified on the music list are suggestions; participants may use a different edition than the one listed. They must provide one copy of their music for the judges to view together. Measures must be numbered. Flutists and pianists must use original music. Contestants may provide the piano part or a photocopy for the judges to share; all photocopies will be kept by RAFA and recycled or destroyed following the event. Use of a photocopy to facilitate page turns is also allowed. PERFORMANCE: Participants performing in Divisions 1 through 6 will not perform with an accompanist at the Review and Contest even if the piece is written with piano accompaniment. Students performing in Divisions 7 and 8 will be required to perform with piano accompaniment at the Review and Contest unless the piece is written for flute alone. All contest winners will be required to perform with piano accompaniment at the Winners Recital if their solo is written with piano accompaniment. There will be no exceptions regarding accompaniment, so students are encouraged to find an accompanist early. Memorization is not required. In most cases, it is best not to observe lengthy repeats and lengthy accompaniment passages. Da Capos should be observed. Participants should prepare the entire piece unless otherwise specified. At the judges discretion, students may be asked to stop in the middle of the piece if enough has been heard to make a sound judgment. Teachers, please stress to your students that this is not a reflection of how the student performed. JUDGING: Judges will complete evaluation sheets on which they will make appropriate comments that include both suggestions for improvement and compliments of strong performance points. Teachers and students should review these together. JUDGES: Two judges will observe each participant. They will work independently on the evaluation sheets and then confer to determine the winners of scholarships. FEE: $15.00 Contest or $10.00 Review. Late payments will not be accepted. REGISTRATION: Registration forms and payment are due October 1st, 2012. (Teachers may make copies of the forms as needed and may write one check for all of their students.) Late registrations will not be accepted. If you have any questions about these guidelines, please contact Mary Croghan, 919-835-4378 or croghanm@gmail.com.
