The TLE Department, headed by Mr. John Redeemer DR. Prado, Head Teacher in TLE, conducted a one-week seminar about EDMODO ( Social Networking Site in Education Mode) at VPTNHS Computer Laboratory from June 17-21, 2012. The seminar aims to introduce the teachers on the proper utilization of the EDMODO Application to their classes. According to Mr. Prado, the application also helps the teachers to easily motivate their students to learn. EDMODO is a new educational application that takes the ideas of a social network. This website can greatly help the teachers to incorporate technology into the classroom as an aid in learning. The teachers are given respective schedules in the Computer Laboratory to update and apply EDMODO on their classes. The Edmodo Application is really fun and challenging. Students learn from the lessons at the same time become updated and aware about the latest technology, Mrs. Nancy M. Bunag, a TLE teacher, said. (Cathy Joy Betonio)

Net Support School Test Designer strengthens the result of learning

VPTNHS teachers take the extra mile by using the NET Support School Test Designer to their Periodical Test. NET Support School Test Designer is a program that enables teachers to design tests and examinations and students to answer the questionnaires on the computer. It lessens the time of checking the test because it has a feature that identifies correct and incorrect answers, thus result can easily be recorded. Mr. John Redeemer DR. Prado, TLE Department Head Teacher, explained the details on how to create and make questionnaires in this program. The teachers are updated and familiarized about the latest technology on testmaking. It aids the students to have a better evaluation of their performances through computers. VPTNHS has two (2) computer laboratories with 50 at the ComLab 1 and 13 at ComLab 2 . The computers are used by the students during their examination.

The result of the test is easily tabulated and computed in just a few seconds after the test. The purpose of providing the computer laboratories with latest programs, applications and website is to make each and every student knowledgeable and updated about the different areas in using computers. The students and teachers of VPTNHS can now go with the flow of the technological world. Mr. Prado said. ( Xandra Marie Lozada)

ACADEMIC EXCELLENCE VS. CULTURAL EXCELLENCE

Can a certain institution excel both in academics and in performing arts? If not, what would be its first priority? Would choosing one suffer the other? What would the consequence be? Vicente P. Trinidad National High School, the institution that focuses on the needs, interests, skills, and abilities of its students, excels in the field of performing arts. No questions, no doubts about it! For if not, this institution would not be named as the only school in the Division of Valenzuela that is known as the School for Performing Arts (SPA). Since its first operation, the school has been a consistent performer/winner in dance, drama, and music during the division, regional, and even national competitions. This school becomes the main attraction in every contest/performance, thus earning the title Kilabot ng Contest. Because of this, there are some people who are very judgmental in saying that this school does not give what is due to its students. They are thinking that the school is giving its top priority in performing arts. They even think that the school is neglecting the true meaning of educating the child. As the Supreme Student Government President, I beg to disagree with these implications. Our school does excel not only in performing arts but also in academics.Recently, our school ranked eighth in Best English and Journalism Implementer. It also bagged six (6) medals in the Division Press Conference. It is also the over-all Champion in the Division Contest during the Buwan ng Wika. This only means that we can excel in both fields if we know how to handle and deal with them. Thus, choosing the thing to prioritize in education is not a big deal. If we just consider these factors: time management, individual differences, and room for improvement.By Gods grace and with our cooperation, hard work, and dedication, we can definitely achieve our priorities. -Jam Christian Torres

If Rizal were still alive, maybe he would still focus on writing novels and articles about the injustices of the church and the Philippine government and the sufferings of Filipinos. In the first place, he would particularly tackle on the rampant graft and corruption of the people who are in authority. Even during Rizals time, bribery is the name of the game. Politicians and friars were involved in making Rizals father suffer a lot. They used their authority and wealth in ruining not only the life of Rizal and his family but also every Filipinos life. They could manipulate and even fabricate things by just giving something to the persons involved. Taxes were religiously collected without giving considerations. At present, the authorities are likewise demanding and powerful. Rules/laws are sometimes disregarded for the good of the chosen ones. In the second place, the church actively participates on the decision of the congress and the senate such as the controversial Reproductive Health Bill. Until now the church has still the authority to take part on the governments ruling on certain political issues. Still both eras are somehow experiencing the same situation. Rizal sacrificed his life just to fight for our rights, the right to decide from our own verdict and not from the viewpoints or manipulation of others. We have our own minds. Our politicians have their own stand. We should not let others control us. If we continue to do this then the death of Rizal will lose its essence. Those monumental edifices are not only build for display purposes but most importantly to remind every Filipino the sacrifices, commitment, dedication and the eagerness of our national hero to gain our freedom from oppression.

with life skills and could be legally employed. The Senior High School component of the curriculum will provide the students with specialized trainings in science and technology, music and arts, and business and entrepreneurship. The Department of Education has underscored the need to address the countrys poor quality of basic education, as reflected in the low scores in National Achievement Test.

However, a certain study in 2012 in the University of the Philippines asserts that there is no correlation between the length of the school cycle and the quality of education. With an additional two years of high school, the DepEd estimates billions of pesos will be needed to provide better facilities and to hire competent teachers. Also, DepEd believes that it wil. In other words, high school education will no longer be viewed as preparatory stage

for tertiary education because those who have graduated from Senior High School would have a choice to either proceed to higher studies or to go to work. Whether this reform will prosper or not still lies on how well the plan is laid out and how sincere the government is in implementing it. In other words, it will take more than a decade to make the Filipino smarter.

Lastly, the authoritys involvement in criminal and civil charges creates chaos and confusion among Filipinos. One of the important characters in his novel, Noli Me Tangere, Padre Damaso though a priest had a daughter named Maria Clara to Pia Alba. We all know that priests are not allowed to have intimate relationships. Even before and until now, priests and politicians are somehow controversially involved in immorality and in some related issues. Filipinos should not be under ones shadow. We should not be afraid of fighting for what is right. We should not tolerate ones unconventional action or behavior. We must always remember that our national hero did everything in attaining our independence. Amidst adversities, we should continue to live according to the will of our Almighty God. And if Jose Rizal were alive, I would definitely thank him for sacrificing his life and even told him that we should not be under anyones shadow, for I firmly believe that the Anino that is being referred to in the amazing video clip is our own Anino. Our shadow will protect us from wrongdoings and will remind us to be obedient for it is there anywhere we go. An individual cannot live without a shadow; therefore, every Filipino must be very cooperative, determined, and God-fearing in order to achieve real independence. In that manner, we can really see the light- the bukangliwayway that we are longing for. And this light will remind us not to forget the significance of having a national hero, DR. JOSE PROTACIO RIZAL.

What is your opinion on the K+12 Curriculum?

Jam Christian A. Torres

I do believe that Grade 7 students will benefit from K+12. They will become good in academics as well as in different skills in language and enterpreneurship. Michelle V. Borlaza K+12 Curriculum is of good quality in the sense that it will provide knowledge for students in preparation for their future.

Sara A. Punzalan

Teachers have to be flexible. Having taught the K-12 in Grade 7 students, there is one thing that I realized. The objective behind this program is for the benefit of the learners but whatever kind of curriculum the government offers to them, the result will still be the same. I have nothing against K-12 for it will set our education standards according to the needs of our society and of our students.
Arnel Marcos P. Liban

It greatly affects the government, teachers, parents and most especially the students in terms of years of stay in school. Joan M. Daco My opinion as a teacher, many of us disagree, most especially the parents. They think that it was a big burden for them. But then, this signals change to improve our system of education.

What is your opinion on the K+12 Curriculum?

Marites A. Torres
The benefactors of this K+12 Curriculum are the Grade 7 students. Finding a job will be easy because of the updated and new technical and vocational courses that have been offered in this curriculum. This outcomes-based curriculum will give us the chance to compete from other countries since this will be the same from the progressive countries. Indeed, this is really a great opportunity not only to the learners but also to their parents as well.

Leah D. Oducayen K+12 curriculum can greatly help the students to become more knowledgeable in different areas of learning. They can follow in the modern trend of education.
Cathy Joy V. Betonio

K+12 is all about the unique strategy of DepEd to teach the students. It is a good idea for us to help ourselves and become successful someday. Let us cooperate. We will acquire quality education through the use of K+12 curriculum. The Grade 7 students are enjoying their lessons because the teachers are using new and updated teaching techniques.

Shawn Michael P. Honera

For me, K+12 still depends upon the performance of the students because this will just reflect to them if they will really have the dedication to burn the midnight oil. However, this can greatly help the Filipino youth to acquire a more holistic education thus, it helps us to be aware and knowledgeable to certain things around us.

Friendship
Shawn Michael P. Honera No words are enough to express How your friends had always been there A family you had searched and found That promised to keep you safe, and sound. Theyre always together telling nasty tales on the ground, Most especially when teachers are not around. And expect that to happen during the break time Watch out for your drools, my ever dear friends of mine. And when you trip with your face first Instead of helping out, there is a burst Of jolly laughter and endless teasing Even if youre getting pissed, youll be laughing. In those days, that youve had a fight Theres a time revenge crosses your mind But in the end, youll always thought for yourself They are your friends and they have been of great help.

When the day ends and the night comes, I want to see, feel all remnants, To remember every moments I will only keep in my heart.

Going Green In The Philippine Scene: A Trendy Attempt or A Timeless Effort?

What comes in your mind when you hear the word green? Some thinks it signifies relaxation, peace, serenity and uh, not quite good stuffs. Anyway, lets not talk about those not quite good stuffs, theyre not really suitable to our ages. Well anyone has his/ her opinion and point of view about anything and everything around us. And as I look at it, I see green as nature. Obviously, green is the color of leaves, which is always present when it is nature that is being talked about. In case youre wondering why the color of leaves is the one used to represent our environment,-I know. there are tons of other colors found in nature and not only green-well, green as we all know was the most dominant color in our environment. But thats not the main reason why it is used to represent nature. The main reason was that trees gives us air and trees got leaves. But, why not use the color of the bark of the tree instead? Easy! The leaves themselves were the ones to give us air. Its like this; we humans inhale oxygen and exhale carbon dioxide. Plants then, inhale carbon dioxide and exhale oxygen. Its like a cycle. It goes on and on as long as there are enough plants and humans to balance the system. Therefore, plants give us sufficient oxygen. O course, we cannot inhale carbon dioxide. Theyre toxic to our bodies. Thats why we expel them. Nowadays, we have more advanced technology that makes our lives easier and more comfortable. It also helps in our progress rate. Good job Homo sapiens! This only proves that we had the smarts. We can now use our minds properly and pass through a complicated situation with grace and less time consumed. Oh my gosh! Homo sapiens, you really did evolve after all! But this advancement in technology doesnt always bring about positive outcomes. What about our environment? Areas where trees used to live are now developed areas for more productive structures or buildings in simpler terms or converted into commercial spaces. Some are occupied by housing projects. What about the trees? What happened to them? They are chopped down and used to make furniture. Thats fine. That is, if the chopped trees are replaced with new ones. But the problem with us people is that were always too busy to care. Its too busy to replace them. Theyre waste of time, money and effort, as others will say. Sometimes I want to ask those who cut down trees legally or illegally, those who are in the government who are too busy to care, Arent you too busy to breathe? Lets face it. Our ecosystem, not only here in the Philippines but also all around the world is slowly dying without us, doing anything about it. But despite those, some people still makes effort to encourage others to go green. They make use of different methods to convince others. For example, some stores uses cloth bags as their product container instead of plastic bags that takes thousands of years to decompose. Some promotes recycling by means of selling products out of the garbage. Others join campaigns on tree planting. There are a thousand ways in going green and help saving our planet. All you have to do is look around. There are also ways in going green that are still in style or with a twist. There are accessories that are recycled but are still nice. All you have to do is look around. Going green is great and fabulous. There are stars, Hollywood stars out there that are in favor of it. Doesnt it felt much better when youre able to help your country, rather, the earth survive? Of course it does! It can give you a peace of mind and a heck of a good nights sleep! Who wouldnt want those? Going green is a trendy and stylish attempt. As for me, people who think it is a timeless effort are idiots. Perhaps someday Ill ask them,-when I finally found my guts!-Arent you too busy to breathe? (Kimberly Mae Tuazon)

TEACHERS
I have always been asked by my colleagues multiple times as to what my stand is on what is happening in the place I consider a shelter of wisdom. I gave them perfect answer. I smiled. Grinned. Paused. Shifted direction and asked Ate Millet.. Ate, may ulam pa? Everyone has his/her own stand. Everyone deserves to express whatever he/she thinks deserved to be heard. But there is always a PARAMETER THAT MUST BE CONSIDERED. Looking back at my first year of teaching here in VPTNHS is like playing an old-fashioned yet classy guitar, not necessarily a modern, electric, expensive guitar but a guitar that brings melody and calmness to the air. There are low keys that are so perceptible to the ears and high notes that are music to the ears. I judged. I have been judged. I have been misjudged. LOW KEYS. I believe in this human principles-everyone should have the opportunities not just to survive, but to excel with their God-given talents and abilities. Those are the values that reflected in my life. I am not a perfect one but I could say that

I have judged, though not easily. I have been judged but given proper venue to defend myself. I have been misjudged which led me to weigh things and reflect. HIGH NOTES. REFLECTION
Month before this school year for me was very hectic, with me teaching summer class students followed by week long seminars just before classes start. It got even dreadful when I misplaced the forms of my summer students, which made me very anxious. And as the school year gets started, the continuous work and aggravation also started. That is with the huge number of students, with their different personalities and behaviors, and meeting the deadlines of paper works. In addition to this are daily issues and concerns with the students. But I dont take all of this negatively. I believe these are the challenges of being a teacher. In the first quarter, I realized, though its very sad, that what Ive done was not enough for my students. Because of what I did of them would get a failing grade from my subject, and none of my some advisory students would cut their class anymore in any subject. Every day the greatest challenge for me is how to educate not only those who interested that are intended to self destruct! Bankers , (economics) businessmen may claim that they are responsible to the growth of a nation, yet too many people are deprived of basic necessities, any profession could claim of this and that but only the lowly teachers (lowly because of being underpaid and neglected) are capable of molding the great minds and soul of every individual. Teachers had passed after my students days. I am very much aware that my time as a students is very different compared to them even the attitude towards studies. Why are we similar in many ways? Another thing was the ideas and principles that my college Alma matter instilled on my mind. Why are are not gifted enough to understand. I feel glad and grateful when students study hard and to know that I was not just able to teach them my lesson but also, helped them to set their goals for the future, guiding them and making changes to their lives. As I reflect, I thought that I should be more dedicated with my profession not double but triple times. (Ms. MichelleV. Borlaza)

Teaching, they said is a noble profession. It certainly is! But I believe it is far beyond just being noble; it is in fact a ministerial job-with meager financial gain, a real teacher is willing to offer and share everything in him/her more than of what is expected of him/her. Engineers build bridges, skyscrapers, but will soon decay! The Scientists boast of sending machines to the outer space-machines After those unfortunate events that I have experienced I have done all of my best. Fur- last quarter, questions had thermore, I told my students to been racing in my mind. Through these institutions, a better person can be developed and improved. Therefore, dedicated leaders and motivated followers can be produced. the various sectors in our society. Our fellowmen are into rallies stating their grievances and sentiments to our government. Filipinos clamor for change, radical change in our political system. Indeed, the main source of change lies in our hands. Our system of government is democracy which means that the power is in the hands of the people and not only on the chosen few. Every Filipino is given equal opportunities and equal rights. We are given freedom of expression and freedom of speech. If we want change, we should take advantage of this chance to choose our leaders. I do believe that the future of our nation lies on the hands of our intelligent voters, for our leaders are the ones responsible in making our homeland a better place to live in. Leaders of our nation have a great influence on our lives. They can even make and break each and every one of us. Our voice can be heard through the power of election which is the catalyst of change. We should be very vigilant in exercising our right to vote; otherwise, our hope of having change will remain hope forever. In choosing the right candidate, we must know his background- family background, educational background and political background. Through this, we will be guided if he is qualified on a certain position. We should not only rely on popularity. Sometimes, press releases as THIS IS ME Sara A. Punzalan

There must be a clear view on the possible solutions on the problems that our country is encountering. Political will is a must in every candidate. and most of all, he must be a God-fearing person. Our beloved parents, teachers, guardians, please do us a favor in choosing the right leader. Think a hundred times before choosing your candidate. Take a look at your children, take a look at your country, and take a look at yourselves. Will this candidate be a channel of change? Will this candidate really help us in alleviating our

WHAT SHOULD ITBE IN LIFE: LOVE OR DREAMS?

Lovers. Partners and also friends encountered this problem. They didnt know what to do when our dreams obstruct the relationship between two people who are so much on love. And they thought about what they should choose: is it love with forever happiness or their dreams that can be fulfilled and succeed someday. One day, my friend asked me, If you have given the right to choose what it should be; your love or your dreams>? When that question sinks in to my mind, I do not know what the best answer should be. Because I had never experienced to be loved and neither the opportunity in life did not come too. But then I thought about the story of the caller in the radio station I used to hear. The caller said that she had a big problem about what she would choose. Is it the man of her life or her dreams? So she listened to what the disc jockey advised to her. The DJ said, Some people says that dream comes once in a lifetime but love can wait. If that person truly loves you, he will sacrifice himself for what is the best for both of you. After a long period of silence, I answered my friend that if I had been given the right to choose between love and my dreams in life, I will choose the one that comes once in a lifetime and it is my dream. The reason is that love is always there even if the person you love is not here beside you. He feels complete as long as your love for each other will remain forever and his dream in life will not be interrupted. And also both of you will always be faithful, honest and sincere for what you feel for the one you love. BY JUDEL PAJARES

HUMAN ASSURANCE
Ruth A. Bensurto
Everything in this world is changing. Even if you do not like it, it would possibly happen. Times are rolling by. There is new and there is an old one. Every existence is dying. How is life without significance? Whose life is it? It is yours. You are not just waking up every day for success in business, preparing for contests, trembling for requests, screaming to heartthrobs, searching for the perfect partner or simply lifes luxury. Try to think. After you obtain all you wanted, you have your money in banks, you have it saved for your beloved offsprings, everything is for them. And then what is next? You will die after tiring and abusing your soiled body. How is your life? You have to think eternally, not temporarily. After death, where would you go? Life is a plant. One hundred percent true. At first, you can see it, smell it, and feel it. Gradually, they will be withered. How can you make every hour important? There is one thing: accept the eternal sureness. I would like you to acquaint someone. Hopefully, you will lovingly know it. I just wish after these hints, you will meet someone like Him. He will never get you hurt; instead he will make you stronger. He is not like others, who will leave you after they gained something from you. Rather, he will help you as much as he can. He will not turn you off in spite of big disillusionment but will give courage through His words. Even earth quakes, oceans will part, skies and galaxies will fall, and ferocious evil would come up in you. He is your refuge in front of world war. Who is He? Even someone would end your precious life, you will not regret it. Simply because you are safe at his side. Some kind of weird. But it is simply true. Perhaps you are aware to Him but not totally aware of him yet He knew you. He knew you entirely. You know He is watching you over and over again. In His eyes, you are visible to him even if you are in every corner of this world. Every darkness would pave in your path. He is at your side. He will serve as your shining lamp in misery. He is closer to you, nearer on the paper youre holding. In fact, He loved you. He loved you in a sense you still exist here on earth. His affection is in you ever since. If you are known with Him, you have certainty. He is exciting to know. Do you know Jesus? Since He has loved you, He even gave his own life to you. Every courage that blew to him is your sin that is gradually healed. Sin? What are those? Unmannered answers to parents, covet, bad words and acts, immorality and so much more. Your sin was paid on the cross through His blood. You are nearly to hell-everlasting death but Jesus lifted you up to eternal life. How can you prove that you deserve Him? How can you change his wonderful redemption? Simply confess your sins, your sinful way of life. Think of the way He died for you because of the loves greatness. Do not be numb on your feeling. Cry if you want, show your repentance to Him. He is open to forgive how messy you are. Let him reign in your heart, forever. And everything you have read will perfectly be yours. Words in here are not adequate to His perfections but He is great. There is a group of people who also know him. Try to approach them and you will know Jesus better and better. I hope it is not too late for you. Do not refuse this opportunity before your time is over.

They called it E-Train (Eco Train), it works by the help of the heat from the sun, through the solar panel that converts it as an electric energy.

And we played simple game like a pin According to the inventor of this project, if President Aquino approves this ball project, this engine will be used outside the UP campus so the rate of pollution will Laugh and laugh until its getting tough decrease. But shes the one who keep me on drive So we keep on drop to let us stop The benefits this powerful invention has to offer are the decrease air pollution rate and the conservation of some natural fossil fuel. Filipinos look forward to creating another eco engines that will surely make not only our country but also the Mother Earth proud.

The GravitySpace floor monitors your weight, and beams a mirror image of yourself back. After that, the image can do some neat activities, like play soccer. It could even perform customized functions just for you, like turning on your favorite TV show when you sit down on the couch, or monitor itself for unfamiliar footsteps, keeping you safe from intruders. The glass floor is surrounded by infrared LEDs covered with pressure-sensitive film. Below the glass floor is a camera and projector. When someone steps down on the film, it stops the infrared beams. The Most Amazing Photos Of Flowers Youve Ever Seen

Flowers arent everyones cup of tea, but the latest project from minimalist filmmaker and photographer Andrew Zuckerman could make even the biggest skeptic fall in love with blooms. His book of photography, Flower, renders some familiar species so crisply theyre almost unrecognizable as something youd see in your neighbors garden. In Flower, Zuckerman says he aims to translate the essential nature of his subjects and unearth qualities that have previously escaped scrutiny. The hefty coffee table tome is the result of an investigation of over 300 species, providing an intimate, pared-down look at the botanical world. Filmmaker David Lynch sings his praises on the books back cover: These photographs of flowers taken by Andrew Zuckerman are pure. And everyone knows you cant argue with a book blurb from David Lynch. Participants recruited based on the criteria for International Headache Society-defined migraines were instructed to record their headaches in a diary every day for three to six months. For chronic headache sufferers, the study found that the risk of headache increased 31 percent when lightning struck within 25 miles of participants homes, and the risk of migraine increased 28 percent. The way weather affects headaches isnt precisely known. The studys authors used mathematical models to account for other factors that could be contributing to an increase in the frequency of headaches. Yet even taking into account related effects like barometric pressure and humidity, their results showed a 19 percent increased risk for headaches on lightning days. Greater instances of negatively charged lightning currents also led to a higher chance of headache. Vincent Martin, one of the studys lead authors, is a University of Cincinnati professor who studies migraines. He explains a few different ways that lightning might trigger headaches. Electromagnetic waves emitted from lightning could trigger headaches, he says. In addition, lightning produces increases in air pollutants like ozone and can cause release of fungal spores that might lead to migraine. However, they say further research is needed to determine the exact tie between a pounding head and meteorological factors. (www.popsi.com )

Internet Universe

As of last year, there were something like 650 million active web sites on the Internet. That number is growing fast, but even if it werent--even if it stopped dead in its tracks right now--you could spend the next 50 years surfing the web at a pace of five sites per minute, 12 hours a day, 365 days per year, and youd still only visit (briefly) 10% of the Internet Universe. Unlike the actual Universe, however, the Internets places do not exist in physical space--theres no such thing as one website being close or far from another one; the two are either linked or they are not. While those links dont correspond directly to any kind of distance or direction, they do suggest a relationship. If, for example, someone built a personal website, and linked to their website through their Facebook page, people would really only arrive at the website via the Facebook page. Most likely, that would mean that not too many people visited the website; the website would be a tiny little out-of-the-way place in the Universe of the Internet. (www.popsci.com)

Will This Fish

transform into medicine?

The animal facility on the bottom floor of a drab building at Duke University is uncomfortably warm and smells a bit like raw seafood. Thats not surprising given whats down there. The space holds a few thousand plastic fish tanks, each home to dozens of zebrafish: oneinch-long, big-eyed vertebrates that are becoming go-to research subjects for many scientists. NicoKatsanis, a Duke geneticist who hunts down the causes of rare illnesses, is one of a growing number of researchers choosing to work with zebrafish instead of rodents. Since scientists learned to selectively mutate zebrafish the ability to turn the species into models of human diseasesthe number of biomedical zebra-fish papers has skyrocketed, from 26 to 2,100 last year. The nonprofit Zebrafish International Resource Center, which sells 2,608 different genetically modified strains to researchers, lists 921 academic labs and companies that use the fish. The field is on fire, says Leonard Zon of Harvard Medical School. Zons lab, for example, has used fish models to study skin cancer, blood diseases, and stem cells. Others have created fish with DNA mutations linked to narcolepsy, muscle disorders, and the large head size associated with autism.

To be sure, rodents still outnumber zebrafish in medical research labs. In 2010, biomedical research papers that used mice or rats were 10 times as common as those that used any other lab animal, and some biological processescomplex brain disorders, say, or anything involving lungsare best studied in mammals rather than fish. But for most other experiments, from watching tumors develop to screening for new drugs, zebrafish are gaining ground. Zebrafish offer three major advantages over rodents. First, they quickly make more zebrafish. A female spawns hundreds of embryos three days after fertilization; mice take three weeks to produce just 10 pups. They are also inexpensive to maintainabout 6.5 cents a day for a tank of a few dozen fish, compared with 90 cents for five mice in a cage. Finally, because larval fish are transparent, researchers can literally watch their organs grow, which makes them especially good for studying problems with organ development. (www.popsi.com)

The FDA has just cleared RP-VITA, a telemedicine robot that can navigate autonomously, for hospital use. The doc-bot allows a doctor to consult with patients and hospital staff remotely through an iPad interface. Built by InTouch Health and iRobot (creator of everyones favorite robot vacuum, the Roomba), RP-VITA can move independently around a busy ICU without bumping into other people or objects. It can be directed by tapping hospital locations on an iPad, and features electronic health record integration. It also has data ports to connect digital stethoscopes, ultrasounds and otoscopes, Fast Company reports.

Weather Makes Basketball Popular

Basketball is considered the number one spectators event in the country simply because it is usually held under a roof (at the Araneta Coliseum for example). Baseball and football could not gain popularity because Filipino spectators are not willing to seat under the scorching sun or heavy rains. It must be noted, however, that young Filipinos are beginning to switch to new games, such as billiards and computer games, because of the limited number of basketball courts in the country.

Filipinos Brought Home 3 Olympic Medals in 1932

RP Placed 2nd in Sea Games

The Philippines placed second to Indonesia in the 1991 Southeast Asian Games held in Manila, with 91 gold, 62 silver and 84 bronze medals and nearly edged out Indonesia which got 92 gold medals. In 1983, the Philippines was also second behind Indonesia in the medal tally, after getting 49 gold medals. The Philippines began participating in Sea Games in November 1977, where it placed third behind Indonesia and Thailand with 31 gold medals.

Three Filipino athletes brought home a bronze medal apiece from the 1932 Los Angeles Olympics. Swimmer Teofilo Yldefonso won a bronze at the 200-meter breaststroke event while Simeon Toribio also clinched a bronze in the high jump event. Jose Cely Villanueva clinched the countrys first boxing bronze medal in the bantamweight category.

Filipinos Won 9 Olympic Medals

Filipino athletes have brought home a total of 9 Olympic medals since the country began participating in the quadrennial event in 1924. Teofilo Yldefonso, a 200-breastroke swimmer, won the countrys first bronze medal at the 1928 Amsterdam Olympics and its second bronze at the 1932 Los Angeles Olympics. The country actually had 3 medals in 1932 when Simeon Torribio, a high jumper, added a bronze and bantamweight boxer Jose Cely Villanueva clinched another bronze. Miguel White, who fought for the country in the 1936 Berlin Olympics, won a bronze in the 400-meter hurdles event. Featherweight boxer Anthony Villanueva, a son of Jose, won the countrys first silver medal at the 1964 Tokyo Olympics. Villanueva actually lost a controversial decision to Russian Stanislav Stephaskin in their battle for the gold medal. Tenpin player Arianne Cerdena won a gold in bowling at the 1988 Seoul Olympics, but Cerdenas gold was not included in the medal tally since bowling was considered only as a demonstration sport. Light flyweight boxer Leopoldo Serantes, however, brought home a bronze from Seoul. Light flyweight boxer Roel Velasco won a bronze at the 1992 Barcelona Olympics. In taekwondo, bantamweight Stephen Fernandez and featherweight Bea Lucero brought home two bronze medals from Barcelona, but they were not included in the medal tally, since taekwondo was just counted as a demonstration sport then. Roels younger brother Mansueto Onyok Velasco won a silver at the 1996 Atlanta Olympics. Onyok lost a controversial decision to Bulgarian Daniel Bojilov in the light-flyweight finals.

Dumapong Won a Bronze in Paralympics

The Philippines got its first bronze medal in the Paralympic Games 2000 courtesy of weightlifter Angeline Dumapong who lifted 110 kilograms to win the bronze in the womens 82.5-kilogram division in Sydney, Australia in December 2000. Paralympics is a major sports competition participated in by differently-abled athletes from around the world and held just after the Olympics.

Velasco Won a Bronze at Goodwill Games

The Philippines got its first and only medal at the Goodwill Games in New York in July 1998 when flyweight Roel Velasco outclassed an American opponent to win the bronze.

PSA Named 11 Athletes of the Millennium

At the inaugural Far Eastern Games in 1913, the Philippines beat China to clinch the championship. Only the two countries competed in the event in 1913 and 1915 while Japan joined in 1917 and Indonesia in 1934. From 1913 to 1934, China won 9 championships and the Philippines only one championship.

In the year 2000, the Philippines Sportswriters Association (PSA) named the 11 Filipino athletes of the millennium: Paeng Nepomuceno and Olivia Bong Coo for bowling; Pancho Villa, Gabriel Flash Elorde, Anthony Villanueva and Mansueto Velasco for boxing; Lydia de Vega, for track and field; Felicisimo Ampon, for tennis; Carlos Loyzaga, for basketball; Teofilo Yldefonso, for swimming; and Eugene Torre, for chess.

The Philippines placed second to Japan among 18 participating countries in 8 sports events at the 1954 Asian Games held in Manila. It also placed second behind Japan among 20 participating countries in 13 sports events at the 1958 Asian Games held in Tokyo.

Filipinos Became World Sports Leaders

The Philippines has hauled in a total of 56 gold medals since it began participating in the 1951 New Delhi Asian Games. When the country hosted the 1954 Asian Games, Filipino athletes captured 14 gold medals, good enough to make the country second to Japan in the medal tally. It also placed second to Japan in the 1958 Tokyo Asiad when Filipino athletes brought home nine gold medals.

At least five Filipinos had headed international sports organizations. They are Florencio Campomanes, former president of International Chess Federation; Justiniano Montano, former president of World Boxing Council; Rudy Salud, former secretary-general of World Boxing Council; Gonzalo Puyat II, former president of International Amateur Basketball Federation; and Manuel Nieto, former president of Oriental Boxing Federation.

PBA Named 5 All-Time Greats
