The Essential Kitchen Bathroom Bedroom magazine is a title of:
uccessful interior design requires balance. It occurs when there is a perfect marriage of style and utility. When planning kitchens, bathrooms and bedrooms this consummate pairing takes on a heightened importance. And so, this month we bring you both a profusion of visual design ideas teamed with informative guides on all those practical things that you really need to know. Our visual inspiration includes insightful advice on using colour with confidence not always easy these days when a neutral palette has been in vogue for so long. In Colour Schemes (p123) leading experts explain how and why certain combinations work and offer creative wisdom for where to use four specially created palette mood boards. Our main bedroom story, Schemes for Dreams (p100) has eight exquisite choices for restful and uplifting ornamental schemes, and our impressive kitchen case studies offer a broad swathe of decorative concepts, including a couple who have brought a little bit of African charm to the UK with a stylish rear extension that completely transforms an otherwise traditional home, Open House (p40). Then there is the striking conversion of a 16th Century barn in Oxfordshire, History Lesson (p20) where old meets new in perfectly balanced proportions. Exposed flint walls and high ceilings have been teamed with simple, contemporary lines to quite spectacular yet tastefully understated results. Our bathroom pages, Designer Elements (p89) have a special theme as three leading international interior designers reveal their professional tricks of the trade on recently completed projects. To guide you in those more practical matters The Essential Guide to Utility Spaces (p65) offers a wealth of thoughtful features to aid with conceiving a hub of domesticity and introduces the latest technological advances in washing machines, tumble dryers and irons. We talk you through those little functional features to help make day-to-day living just a little bit easier. Enjoy the issue.

en years and a table thats what occupied Jo Nicholls mind when it came to choosing a designer for her new kitchen. Ten years ago, Matt Podesta built us a lovely English oak kitchen table, so he was my first port of call, explains Jo. And, since the table was bought with some money inherited from her mother, Jo says that it has particular sentimental value and was a must-keep item in the new room. The new kitchen project started with a frustration in the layout of the ground floor. With two growing boys (Conor, 13, and Jack, 10) we were increasingly feeling that having a small kitchen next to a small TV room wasnt ideal, so we decided to knock the two rooms into one family living space, explains Jo. Matt Podesta immediately suggested involving architect Jeremy Spratley of Spratley Studios, given the complexity of the project, including an extension, steel beams and work to level the floor between the two rooms. We spent an unusual amount of time at the design stage, batting around ideas with Matt and Jeremy, but it was time well spent as it meant that we could move really quickly when it came to completing the build. Matt designed classic furniture with a double panel detail on the doors, hand-painted in a light yet warm shade of grey. Oak accents provide contrast to the painted furniture and link the design to the oak table. There are lots of individual touches, from the brushed

Quirky touches like this add character to the room and create an individual, bespoke feel, says Matt. Jo loves cooking as a way to relax after a busy working day, so she chose a Wolf range my treat to myself, for its powerful cooking options, including a griddle plate which is ideal for making American pancakes the house-favourite. Jo particularly recommends the boiling water tap. I wasnt sure it was worth it, but I listened to Matt and Im really glad I did, she says. Coming in from work, I can start the dinner cooking in seconds. Folding glass doors open onto the patio, creating one element of the new design that Jo most appreciates. We couldnt access the garden from the kitchen before, she explains. Now the space flows. We have parties with people outside by the fire-pit, or wandering inside for drinks at the breakfast bar, and it all works really well. Naturally, the table enjoys pride of place, Having a space where we can all be together, while Im cooking and the boys are watching TV or doing their homework, makes such a difference, says Jo. Now I honestly wonder what took us so long to do it.

as it built as a stable, a coach house or a barn? Its so hard to tell that the only certain thing is that the timber-framed wing of this early Georgian townhouse in Oxfordshire dates back to the 16th Century. It required a serious programme of renovation and updating to make it a useful part of this family home. It was a very interesting project, recalls Marcus Watkins, Design Manager at Kitchen Architecture. The house and the old wing lets call it a barn had most recently been used as offices, and there had been some rather odd additions over the years. The

wall as a nice way of revealing the character of the property, with texture that contrasts well with the clean lines of the Bulthaup furniture, he says. Made of pale honeycoloured elm, the cabinetry sits comfortably below the vaulted ceiling, supported by the original oak beams. And, to emphasise the linear and contemporary design, the grain on the tall cabinets runs vertically yet on the island and hob run it is horizontal to maximise the sense of width. In keeping with his clients brief to create a sociable entertaining space, the island preparation zone looks out over a breakfast bar, and then to the dining table and courtyard beyond. Says Marcus, The working area of the room is distinct from the entertaining spaces,
but not so far away that the cook cant join in. And the roller shutter in the tall run houses a drinks station, with cups, glasses and crockery next to the coffee machine so that anyone wanting to make a drink or lay the table neednt get in the way of dinner preparation. Three dramatic black glass pendant lights emphasise the double-height of the room, and teamed with matching black leather bar stools, create a focal point of the island. Its simple, rectangular shape is accentuated by a chunky symmetrical breakfast bar, while aluminium side panels contrast with the elm and add interest to the design. Creating a design with furniture in proportion to the height of the room was very important, explains Marcus. He mirrored

Period properties shouldnt preclude contemporary design and I think this is proof.

ts hard to imagine many kitchens being inspired by the master bedroom, but for Nicky Smith the streamlined effect of her built-in wardrobe was just what she was looking for. I suppose it was a bit unusual to take a designer straight up to our bedroom, she agrees, laughing, but we had that style of wall-to-wall fitted wardrobe cupboards and got the idea for the kitchen from that. Mike and Nicky Smith bought their beautiful four-bedroomed Edwardian home in north London over nine years ago. But with the kitchen originally upstairs and
a bedroom in their current living space, the home had needed a complete refurbishment. After 18 months of hard graft they had returned the kitchen to the ground floor, installed a downstairs lavatory and brought order to their home, before moving to Jakarta for three years with Mikes job. When we came back we did everything we couldnt afford to do before we left put oak flooring in the study and hall plus applied for planning to extend our kitchen. By getting the side return done, we wanted a bigger dining area and to make it a lighter more social family space.

Natural light and plenty of storage were critical parts of the design brief Top right Nicky enjoys leafing through her collection of cook books standing at the island Far right The Bombo stools are the perfect partner for the Hacker furniture and provide a seating area that affords a clear view of the garden
34 ekbb.co.uk
The Smiths were in the enviable position of knowing almost exactly what they wanted when they entered the showroom of Funktional Kitchens in Crouch End, London. Friends had already installed the German-designed Hacker kitchens, sold by Emma Hood and her colleagues, so Nicky knew the product was affordable as well as hardwearing for a family with two teenagers and two cats. With nine years experience behind her, Emma from Funktional Kitchens was not phased by the two metre height restriction for the boundary wall and was determined to make a virtue of necessity. We explored several different options, but Matt and Nicky were clear that they wanted a kitchen in matt white, with a mixed wooden finish, lots of storage and handleless cupboards, Emma said. They wanted something modern, where
they could sit at the breakfast bar while facing the garden which tied the new space in with the old. The Smiths settled on the Inova range of Hacker kitchens, enhancing the natural light afforded by the skylight and the French windows, with a white laminate finish and grey acacia panels. The wooden laminate on the island is repeated on the shelves of the mirrored opening between the cupboards and above the wine fridge, subtly tying all areas of the kitchen together. Touch latches on the cupboards emphasise the streamlined quality of the kitchen and the pale luminous Cimstone composite on the island surface not only reflects the light from the windows, but provides a large practical work and eating surface. Even though they wanted a modern finish, the couple decided to keep the exquisite stained glass panels above
the French windows. Nicky took inspiration from the pinkish background to create her signature aubergine splashback, which she then subtly echoed with identically coloured dining chairs. By introducing a bold contrasting colour to the white matt finish and wood-effect panels, the room not only becomes a bright airy space, but one that is carefully connected, without appearing clinical. As with all builds there were inevitable compromises. The low boundary wall restricted their options, but as a result Funktional Kitchens created a wall of almost endless cupboard space. Not only does this subtle design hide the boiler and the underfloor heating, but in neatly divided drawers and shelves Nicky can store medicines, candles, vases, glasses, tupperwares and an entire baking cupboard. A small space behind the opaque glass door at

the end of the dining area serves as a cosy but useful utility room. Set into the cupboards is a rectangular mirror and shelves, which deftly create an illusion of depth in the room, as well as breaking up the expanse of white with brightly coloured glasses and fruit. The island itself serves as both breakfast bar and workspace. Its minimalism serves to draw the eye to the lush lawn and magnificent Magnolia tree in the garden beyond. The grasses and bamboo serve as a restful canvas for the weary worker or school child at the start or end of the day. We wanted the garden to be quite a focal point, says Nicky. Its lovely when were sitting at the bar because we have a completely uninterrupted view. Flanking the cupboards at the garden end of the kitchen are two Siemens ovens, a combination microwave oven and a fan assisted below. The Jan Levy Rhetoric and Reality picture provides a superb brightly coloured contrasting focal point within the room, as well as enriching the aubergine and grey acacia surroundings. I love this kitchen, its a great place to be in summer or winter, and makes the whole building process worthwhile. We knew what we wanted, but obviously it still evolved, says Nicky, adding with a laugh, We were going to have a bench under the picture, but we ended up increasing the storage and installing a new wine cooler instead. With a busy family to run, extra space was probably a wise move.

About to turn around and head home, thanks to the tired dcor and warren-style interior created by a granny annexe added to the side of the house, they suddenly had a very pleasant surprise. I put my head out of the back door and almost couldnt believe what I saw an amazing garden with old oak trees, a vegetable garden, log cabin and large lawn, laughs Virginia. In an area where large gardens are something of a rarity, Virginia and Anthony moved quickly to snap up the property, envisioning their young twin sons, Joel and

The couple set about re-configuring the layout to suit their lifestyle and settled on a plan to replace the granny annexe with a large kitchen-family space. Azmat and Neil decided to make a feature of the Gaudi-inspired alcoves when they completely renovated their new kitchen, using soft shades of apple green and ooding the room with plenty of light

Above The same Brazilian green slate flooring leads smoothly from the entrance hall right through the kitchendining room, maximising the sense of space
ot everyone would see the potential in a farmhouse painted in lurid colours and a kitchen made from concrete blocks. There was also an olive tree growing out of the floor and it was all finished off with an array of Romanesque columns. But Syed Azmatullah (known as Azmat) and partner Neil werent going to let the rather unusual decoration stand in their way. The house needed complete refurbishment,
including new plumbing, electrics, floors and bathrooms, so we knew wed be ripping everything out anyway, says Azmat. Situated in a peaceful location in the Sussex countryside with views over the South Downs, the 200 year old property was otherwise ideal for Azmat and Neil. Having recently returned home to Brighton after living in Germany and America, Azmat says that they were looking for a property in a less urban environment, but
Top right The Britannia range has an induction top for speedy, efficient cooking ideal in this country home without access to mains gas Right There is no scrabbling about at the back of a corner cupboard, thanks to a magic corner system

not too far from friends. This house, despite the work required, ticked all the boxes. At some point in the houses history, an extension had been built at the rear, connecting the main house to an outbuilding. And this was the site of the kitchen. We could see the potential of opening up the room to the south-facing patio outside, so we added folding glass doors, and re-glazed the roof, explains Azmat. When it came to the pillars, the olive tree and a rather curious hand-painted mural there was no question that they had to go, but there was one existing feature that they chose to keep. The previous owners told us that they had been to Barcelona many years ago and been inspired by Gaudis architecture, he says. They created these Gaudi-inspired alcoves in the kitchen and we felt they were rather special and added character to the room. With a brief to create an open kitchendining space, Azmat and Neil headed off to meet designer Shane Hilton at Harvey Jones. We knew a number of different kitchen suppliers, but Harvey Jones had a very simple Shaker style design on display which we both liked immediately and felt it blended traditional and contemporary styles in a
56 ekbb.co.uk
way that would suit our space. Shane was also keen to work in harmony with the style of architecture. I felt that working with, not against, the vaulted ceiling would create a dramatic design and make the most of the space, he says. An extractor chimney above the steel range draws the eye upwards. Once we had settled on the extractor hood, I commissioned a two metre tall, curvedfronted custom-made stainless steel chimney and designed an angle-housing at the top, says Shane. It makes the main focal point in the room, enhanced by stepped wall cupboards either side. Uplighters on top of the cupboards illuminate the vaulted ceiling at night. On the adjacent wall, two ceramic sinks are placed in the middle of the central scalloped alcove, their curved shape echoed in the design of the base cupboards at both ends. While the cupboards and drawers provide ample storage and the sweeping honed Zodiaq Chalk White worktops plenty of prep space, it is the colour of the cabinetry that Azmat enjoys the most. Its my favourite colour, he says simply. The soft apple green shade links to the colours of the garden, seen so readily through the glass doors, and to the natural tones of the Brazilian green slate flooring. Both Azmat and
Neil enjoy cooking and time spent in the kitchen. The room works brilliantly now and, even if we are both cooking, we dont get in each others way, says Azmat. It has a very open feel with an easy flow around the space it makes entertaining very relaxed.

LAUNDRY LOW-DOWN
Not every home has the space for a laundry or utility room, but its the one little extra room that has an enormous impact on kitchen life
Its sheer joy not to have baskets of laundry in the middle of the kitchen
s our kitchens continue to develop as the centre of family and social life, they are becoming more and more multi-functional. The open plan kitchen is not only the cooking and food storage centre, its often the homework come office space, opening out into a digital viewing and lounging area as well. We welcome our guests into our kitchens for formal and informal occasions and as a consequence its really not ideal to have laundry appliances on view. A separate laundry or utility room now tops most wish lists and is often designed in tandem with a new kitchen. Kitchen-conservatory extensions often result in a large new room, leaving the old kitchen as a bridging space that can be used for this purpose, with perhaps a new downstairs shower room/cloakroom. If youve gone from having laundry appliances in the kitchen to getting them into a room of their own, its sheer joy not to have baskets of laundry in the middle of the kitchen, and of course, to enjoy the peace and quiet in a room thats not constantly got a washing

The general idea of this hub of domesticity is to use it like an old fashioned scullery
machine spinning and a tumble dryer tumbling at all hours. Its also a good idea to combine the laundry/utility with a boot room concept, especially if you have sporty members of the family who trail in and out with muddy kit, dogs that need to be walked and especially if you live in the country or do lots of gardening. You can even install a bath for washing the dog before he jumps onto your clean sofa after a muddy walk. A laundry-utility room needs to be totally practical, furnished with hardwearing surfaces, a large sink and as much storage as possible. Consider double-height wall cabinets, using the higher level cupboards for rarely used items or once-a-year kit such as Christmas china, party platters, boxes of party glassware etc. Try to leave floor space for an ironing board that can be permanently left in position, and a hanging rail for either airing clothes or hanging up just-ironed items.

Think about including a second dishwasher, especially if you regularly entertain for large parties
The general idea of this hub of domesticity is to treat it a little like an old-fashioned scullery its where all the practical action happens, where dirty crockery can be stacked mid-dinner party and where bulk-buys can be stored. If youre thinking of including a laundry-utility in your new kitchen project, think about including a second dishwasher, especially if you regularly cook and entertain for large parties. One option is to use the old dishwasher from the previous kitchen if its still in good working order. A large sink is a good choice too, whether its used for soaking large pans, for cutting or plunging fresh flowers, scrubbing trainers and football boots, or simply for handwashing delicate items. A tap with a pull-out hose and spray nozzle is also useful for rinsing items, especially large pans and so on. Although its not vital to use top end cabinetry, dont stint on work surfaces and flooring, as they will get a significant amount of wear and tear. Matt Podesta, designer and founder of bespoke kitchen company Podesta says, For most utility rooms, the budget is the starting point as its rare that people want to use a similar budget for the utility as they do on a kitchen. We often use melamine carcasses as they are more durable, and suggest a lay-on door in similar style and colour to the main kitchen. In many cases, access to the rear of the house is through the utility room so we find ourselves designing the space to be used as a utility, dog and boot room, and to provide room for coats and umbrellas as many guests go straight round to the back door! Woodstock Furniture has also been asked to design boot rooms, and Andrew Hall, MD and chief designer, says The perfect boot room should feature plenty of low-level storage spaces for the multitude of shoes and boots that accumulate in most households. Top this space with a handy seat, and make sure there is adequate hanging space for outdoor clothing. A deep butler sink is perfect for cleaning muddy boots and garden tools too, surround it with a polished granite work surface for a durable finish that will last for years to come.

f you are buying a new kitchen, smart storage is one of the most important elements for improving the hub of your home. Your ideas and planning should concentrate on performance and practical solutions to make your life easier. A great looking kitchen with stunning cabinetry and durable worktops needs to work hard behind the scenes, for example, with soft close mechanisms, easy opening and efficient hinge systems. How easy is it for you to put items away and can you reach and open drawers and cupboards answering these questions will help you achieve a design that looks good and feels good too.

ESSENTIAL DESIGN
Designer John Minshaw is recognised for designing and building private residences with impressive architectural features
John Minshaw is an awardwinning architectural and interior designer from London who favours a combination of minimal style and restrained luxury. His broad portfolio boasts both new-build projects and complete renovations. Director of his own design practice, he works mainly on listed properties where he is known for making a feature of the decorative period features.
John Minshaw
he airy and spacious feel of the bathrooms in this property has not been compromised by the design, with exposed wooden beams keeping an authentic feel. Its simplistic design is both welcoming and dramatic. Not only does it make use of all the potential space, but it also discreetly incorporates practical storage and design aspects. What were the main challenges? When starting a project, I imagine taking the building and turning it upside down. All the elements that fall out are the least important, and what remains is what I refer to as the bones. Primarily, you have to make sure that the planning is correct, and ensure that any fixed aspects which require services are in the right position. If the bones need to be altered, the trick is in doing so in such a way to make it look as though it has always been there. With this in mind, the guest bathroom was originally a disused lean-to at the end of the building. I reclaimed the space, retaining only the original exposed beams which became a key feature in the design. Was your design influenced by the architecture of the house? The original buildings, which are Grade II listed, initially served as the barn, stable and coach house
to a 16th Century manor house. The property is sited adjacent to the moat of a ruined 12th Century castle. Therefore, the project was dictated by the architecture with regards to what had to be retained. In the Thatch, the guest bathroom was about the only part of original building that was left, including the original beamed ceiling. How do you inject a clients personality into a bathroom? Bathrooms should always be clean and clutter free rooms. However, personality can be introduced through bold features such as the chequer board floor in the guest bathroom or bold stone such as the slate tiles used in the second guest bathroom. I used iconic whitegoods such as the central Philippe Starck bath in the master bathroom and a wonderful large 1950s Orpaline Pendant (not shown). What are your favourite features? In the guest bathroom, I would say my favourite feature is the juxtaposition of the old and new, such as the exposed beams that date back to the 16th Century against the clean, strong white Farrow & Ball walls. In the master bathroom, we created a circular window to give us borrowed light from the main barn which was definitely a successful achievement.
Above The master bathroom has a private yet seamless feel thats in-keeping with the light and spacious feel in the master bedroom Left The circular window sheds an abundance of light down on to the softly shaped Starck 2 bath from C.P. Hart Right The statement chequered floor balances the original beams and brings a modern twist to this reclaimed space Below Simplicity is key in creating a clean and simple space. White furniture contrasts beautifully with the dark stone flooring for a sleek look

Wendy Valliere
A dramatic bathroom has been transformed into a glamorous retreat with striking black accents and luxury statement furniture

Its with this dedication throughout her 20 years in the industry, that has seen her travel and work across America and throughout Europe. In 1999, she founded her own company, Seldom Scene Interiors, to which she brings her full range of expertise and advises clients with her invaluable design sense.
hoosing a monochrome colour palette has created a stunning contrast in this indulgent bathroom which exudes a seductive allure. Oversized furniture pieces are complemented by ornamental shapes to give this space a truly memorable style. Where does your inspiration come from? My inspiration comes from life experience and the feel of the project. Each project has its own unique influences that drive the design direction. Did the architecture of the house influence your design? Yes and no, the exterior is traditional four square Georgian, reconstructed in the style of the original manor house while the interiors are midcentury, Hollywood regency. The interior architectural elements were designed to be classical and current feeling. I used non-traditional colour on the walls to give the large spaces intimacy and warmth resulting in a youthful, liveable feeling. Do you have a signature style that you adapt to the clients brief? My signature style would probably be best described as looking as though the house has always been there. Im not afraid to use texture, pattern and colour to give a room
interest. Unexpected pieces excite the eye appeal. All these elements make a room feel as if it has evolved over many years of family life. What are your favourite features in this bathroom? I would have to say the floor. It turned out just as I imagined (like an exquisite rug) artfully crafted in black and white marble. How would you advise a client to create an intimate feel in a large bathroom space? Use fabrics and surfaces with varying scales of pattern and texture, dont be afraid of color. Furniture pieces such as vanities and benches that dont have a traditional bathroom design to them are always interesting. How do you get a sense of the clients personality and incorporate it in your design? When an existing client starts a new project with us its both a comfort and a challenge. I ask new clients to pull together images of rooms and products they like and dislike. The dislikes seem to be easier for them to identify, while likes can be more subjective. I then pull together a complete scheme of the rooms with drapery, rugs, soft furnishings and present to the client. Its uncanny how often they comment, its like you were inside my head, I love it.
Use unexpected furniture pieces, choose great lighting and look beyond the traditional choices

Darryl Osada
A Deco-style bathroom in a Belgravia Penthouse has been tranformed using a combination of luxurious marble and mirror
Darryl Osada is inspired by the different cultures experienced while travelling. He describes his signature style as a juxtaposition of old and new influences which he believes leads to reinvention. In 2004, he founded Osada Design. His company pays particular attention to the minutest detail, reacting to the space, the available natural light and the functional needs of his clients to produce a harmonious finished project.
Above Darryl had a vision for a sanctuary bathing space which has successfully incorporated classic sanitaryware and fittings from West One Bathrooms to maintain a harmonious and fuss-free look
he first thing to strike you about this Belgravia penthouse bathroom is the extraordinary light and hint of past glamour. With the restoration of original architectural features and the mix of lighting with mirrored and reflective surfaces, the overall effect of space and increasing depth of vision is magnified. What were the initial challenges? Creating practical as well as beautiful spaces within a Grade II Listed building is always going to be a challenge. It is important to maximise natural light, as well as incorporating and working with the period features within the context of a contemporary design. How did you set about choosing the surfaces for this room? Firstly, because the new layout was a relatively long and narrow space, I decided that we needed to reflect as much natural light deep into the space, encapsulating a wealth of fragmented light, and sending it in every direction. I wanted to inject an element of style inspired by retro, vintage and modern design. The planning and layout came first, followed by the design which must suit the lifestyle of the individuals using the space. Style and fluidity are key elements, but functionality and quality are just as important.
Do you have a signature style? Each project is unique, having a sensitive and open approach is of vital importance, whether working with a listed building or new build. Very often, there are so many layers to these historic buildings, that it is like peeling an onion, and all of the details discovered on the way influence the final design. I truly believe that good design is about timelessness and longevity. How do you begin to translate the clients brief into reality? The design brief is a direct response to the site, its environment and surroundings, as well as the clients needs and aspirations. A space has to be structured and edited to relate to the clients needs. Flow and movement within is important, but each component introduced must contribute to the overall sense of balance, harmony and wellbeing. What are your favourite features? The bathroom has many great features which I like to think of in terms of a good recipe consisting of many desirable ingredients. However, it is the complementary effect and combination of quality fittings and use of practical and durable materials, together with thoughtful design which leads to its eventual success.
Above A seamless style is achieved with an impressive glass door shower enclosure which offers flexibility and opens up this relatively narrow room for an illusion of space and a continuous streamlined style

WARMING INDIGO (RIGHT) A few well-considered yet simple touches can elevate a bedroom. For the ultimate of comfort, add an upholstered headboard in your favourite colour or pattern and build the space around it. In Brandi Beckers New York loft, her master bedroom is calming in shades of indigo and brown. This colour combination is warming and appealing to the eye and her mix of pattern on the bed combined with the choice of artwork adds visual interest, using both scale and tone to make this sleeping space soft and welcoming.

NATURALLY NEUTRAL Try to stick with three core colours and mix and match them throughout the space. Neutral nesting need not be boring. In fact, sometimes less is more if you work with your subdued palette using intuition and a sensitive eye. The calm palette in this bedroom is so inviting. Pale mint, rose and yellow combined with beautiful materials gives this room a luxurious and comfortable vibe. For me, the layers of texture in this limited colour palette is what keeps it alive and interesting.

SOFTENING THE LINES Isnt this a charming corner nook? If you place your hand over the light and chair, you may notice a big difference. How does it look with only the dresser? Not as exciting, right? The chair and floor lamp bring in their own personalities but are equally practical, and that punch of yellow really steals the show. When laying out a bedroom, try to add something in a few of the corners, like a floor lamp, chair or plant, to soften the space and make it feel less boxy. This bedroom layout really works well because the walkways are wide enough to pass through without a problem. I like that the room has a clean focus the bed is positioned to have a view over the pretty garden upon waking up, which is better than if it had been positioned in front of a window. Always ask yourself if youre making the best use of your bedroom layout.

BUTTON BACKED I always love seeing what stylist Sania Pell has done new to her home whenever I visit. On a shelf above her bed she displays an eclectic mix of small metal votive offerings still found in Catholic churches in both Mexico and Europe, along with mirrors from India and an orchid. On the wall, her favourite buttons are randomly scattered to mimic wallpaper. Her tufted grey headboard is adorned with pretty understated buttons, while her bed is layered with handmade pillows and bedding, including a patchwork throw that she made, making her bedroom a warm, cosy space inviting relaxation and sweet dreams.

SIMPLE STORAGE Consider your storage when deciding how to lay out a room because most rooms require more than you think. In this bedroom, it was impossible to add a door to the wardrobe because it could not open and close next to the nearby wall. A folding door was not an option as the space was too narrow, so a subtle curtain and rod were installed to blend with the wall colour, thus concealing the hanging space, making the bedroom free of visual clutter.
110 ekbb.co.uk
RECYCLED STYLE A handmade four-poster bed in recycled wood was the starting point for the entire decorative scheme in this Dutch bedroom. Its warm simplicity coupled with the bedding in calm blue tones, and the blue accent wall, reflect the style of the entire home, which is handmade, calm, warm and natural. The sheer window panel and ceramic dragonflies that seem to be flying away on the wall add softness, while the shelving gives the homeowner the option to switch her displays on a whim. Layered bedding in mismatched checks, polka dots and florals resonates well in this restful space.

he potential for clutter and untidiness in a bedroom is considerable. Clothes, shoes and accessories all need to be hung, stacked and stored so they can be retrieved easily without the temptation of flinging anything onto the nearest chair. Like any of our possessions, analysing the contents of a wardrobe and collections of accessories usually divides into two items worn regularly and those only used occasionally. Then there are things we are happy to have on show and those we are not. Finding the right storage for your lifestyle and bedroom, with the hugely versatile storage options around, can make day to day living easier and more harmonious without any reason to compromise on style. Sam OGrady and Cathy Emmins, who head up London interiors company Oliver Bea Design, have a clear and well thought out philosophy when it comes to attractive, yet practical storage. We believe that design must never come at the expense of practicality and this is especially important in bedrooms where storage is always a top priority. Bespoke fitted furniture and standalone pieces each have pros and cons but there are some general guidelines we tend to follow.

Smaller or awkwardly shaped rooms lend themselves to fitted storage solutions as they tend to make the most of available space and create a uniform, sleek appearance. Flexibility on finishes is another benefit of bespoke furniture as the end result is highly personalised. Standalone pieces are often more appropriate in larger rooms or where a more classical, period feel is desired. Freestanding chest of drawers, for example, work particularly well in an alcove and when combined with a lamp or mirror can become a focal point for the entire room. In addition to the conventional wardrobe space we encourage our clients to consider underbed storage. A fabric covered ottoman, divan base or an upholstered blanket box are not only ways of gaining valuable space to store out of season clothing but they can introduce another fabric and create more interest and texture. INDIGO BLUES
Indigo has real power and depth, and theres something remarkably calming about its intensity. It has a way of drawing you in, almost as if youre looking into a deep, inviting pool and its this sense of tranquility and understated strength that may explain why its such a popular colour in these challenging economic times. Indigo is incredibly versatile too, and paint colours such as Fired Earths Bamiyan Blue, Woad Blue and Fountains Blue can either be used on their own to really make a statement, or can be a perfect foil for a palette of gentle browns, violets or soft blues and greys.
ROB WHITAKER, Brand Director, Fired Earth
Take inspiration for your scheme with these creative decorating combinations
A dark charcoal grey, like Dark Lead, adds sophistication and drama to any room and its easy to live with. The best way to introduce this serious colour is to create a feature wall. Trumpet is like the wild friend of Dark Lead and does wonders to lift a scheme. This colour packs a punch so use it sparingly. Paint small pieces of furniture like a shelving unit and fill it with your favourite grey and yellow treasures. If you want more yellow in your scheme, opt for a soft hue like Carys being softer means you can use it on large expanses of wall.
DAVID MOTTERSHEAD, Managing Director, Little Greene
ESSENTIAL COLOUR
The beauty of this scheme is that it combines a contemporary neutral palette with friendly tones of soft green blue. This creates a look that is both calm and inviting. Shaded White is exactly right for this look, it avoids yellow tones but is not so grey as to be cold. It would be best used in an Estate Eggshell finish on woodwork and furniture in contrast to the slightly lighter Slipper Satin in Estate Emulsion on the walls. These two colours complement each other perfectly to make rooms look bigger and less busy. Beautiful Teresas Green could be used as an accent colour on furniture or in the back of glazed cupboards or shelves.
JOA STUDHOLME, International Colour Consultant, Farrow & Ball
MUTED TONES
Organic shades are the inspiration for this look. The colours are muted and feminine creating a sense of soothing calm and comfort. Soft pinks, such as Plantation Rose, work when layered with greyed taupes and natural cotton shades bringing a feminine influence. While pale greens and hushed teals, such as Hoorne Blue, draw their inspiration from nature adding a relaxed and serene contrast to the look.

We uncover this chefs passion for food and what he values at home
MICHEL ROUX JR
ichelin-starred chef Michel Roux Jr, 51, owns Le Gavroche in Mayfair, as well as running two of Londons other leading restaurants, Roux at Parliament Square and Roux at the Landau at the Langham Hotel. Having grown up in Kent, on the estate of Major Peter Cazelet (horse trainer to the Queen), where his father was the private chef, he went on to train with master patissier Hellegouarche, the best pastry chef in France. Then, later with Alain Chapel (one of the founding fathers of nouvelle cuisine) at his restaurant at Mionnay, near Lyon. He now lives in south London with his wife of some 23 years, Giselle and daughter, Emily, 20, who is training to be a chef. His most recent challenge has been judging on the BBC One show MasterChef: The Professionals. Do you have a state of the art kitchen at home? My kitchen in London is quite basic but functional. I dont cook there often as its 14 years old and due for an overhaul. Its not very me but hopefully the next one will be more state of the art. Is the one in France very different? Completely. Its a very Provenal style house, with a red tiled floor, thick stone walls and a big butchers block. We have a huge AGA, which is both electric and gas, with a large dining table which is great for entertaining. Everything happens in the kitchen and it is definitely the most used room in the house. Like most character-filled houses there is always some work to be done! What is your must-have kitchen gadget? Sharp knives and good saucepans are the basic kitchen essentials. So important in fact, that I have my own range of saucepans with GreenPan and knives with Global Knives, which I use myself at home. Also, I dont know what Id do without my KitchenAid mixer.
What are your childhood memories of growing up on a country estate in Kent? It was a beautiful estate with trout ponds and watercress streams. It was an idyllic place to spend a childhood. I foraged for chestnuts and wild strawberries with my grandmother. The kitchen always smelled sweet and the butlers wife made old English puddings. Is there a dish which always transports you to that time? I think it would have to be roast chestnuts or vanilla ice cream, which I remember churning by hand with my father. What is your favourite dish at the moment? I love game in winter. I dont think you can beat a simple roast with a good bottle of Cote du Rhone. What is your favourite ingredient? There are too many to list. Essentially though, seasoning is so important. I think without salt and pepper, food would definitely be very dull. Who would you most love to cook for? Eric Cantona. I am a Manchester United fan and he is a legend. Does your wife cook much? She cooks everyday for herself as I am working. She cooks simply, but well. However, she didnt marry me just for my looks! What sort of dinner guest are you? I dont get invited often enough, which is a pity but as a chef you do have quite anti-social hours. I think people expect chefs to be acutely critical of food, but this isnt the case when you are eating with friends, it is always a pleasure. Do you collect anything? I really enjoy collecting old cookery books and I have well over 600.
