Hello everyone Last week we held the School Faction Swimming Carnival. Mr Faulkner, along with a band of extremely hard working helpers, organised and ran a very successful event. I would like to thank all those who contributed, particularly those who volunteered their time, or came to watch and cheer providing great moral support. This year we recorded the greatest participation of students in the carnival; this is fabulous to see and indicates that more students are becoming involved in swimming and most importantly participating in the Department of Education in school swimming programme. By the very nature of where we live it is essential that all children learn how to swim, the in-school swimming programme is the perfect opportunity to do this. Congratulations to the champion and runner up recipients, however congratulations to every single one of you who competed on the day, you all demonstrate the values of a true Locky Legend! The National Assessment Programme Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) will be conducted week 2 term 2 for students in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9. Parents who wish to withdraw their children from the assessments are required to complete a Parental Withdrawal form. If you wish to withdraw your child from participating please contact the school and I will organise the paper work. Enrolments have continued to flow in, this is wonderful for our school however it does mean that we may need to look at the structure of classes. We will leave this for another week to gauge if it has settled before we attempt to rearrange. I realise this is an inconvenience however sometimes it is unavoidable. Mathematics Parent Information Session Mr Beatty, Numeracy Specialist Teacher, will be providing an information session on Mathematics for parents/carers who have children in Pre Primary and/or Year 1. The following will be covered: Mathematics Readiness what you can do to support your child in preparing them prior to entering school; What the expectation and achievement standard is for Mathematics in Pre Primary and Year 1 in other words what will your children be expected to do; and Ideas for how you can support your childs mathematical development at home. Where: Mount Lockyer Primary School Music Room When: 21 March 2013, 9.00am Coffee, tea and refreshments on arrival Attendance: Congratulations Years 3, 4 and 7 on 94% attendance. There has been an over all decline in attendance from Weeks 1 and 2 which is disappointing. The goal we need to strive for is 98% to match Year 3 and 7 Weeks 1 and 2. Congratulations to Years 3, 4 and 7 who are leading for Weeks 3 and 4 all receiving attendance of 94%. This Thursday Room 9 will be providing entertainment and hosting the assembly. Maxine Augustson Principal

Chaplains Chat Hello again. Isnt it interesting how different we all are? My son, for example, loves to draw pictures. We must have thousands crammed in every spare draw and watch out if he catches us trying to secretly thin out the pile. Every piece is important to him. But almost all are without colour. Also, every drawing is moving. Planes swirling, cars crashing, bullets flying, robots smashing. Nothing stands still. My daughter, on the other hand, has always created portraits of pretty girls modelling her own fashion designs or quiet landscapes full of colour. She has 12 different shades of every colour in her pencil case and uses all of them. All my son wants is a lead pencil and an eraser. Similarly not everyone learns the same way. Some learn by doing, others seem to listen and absorb information easily. One child will hit the ground running in kindy and power through their schooling to achieve great things. Another will seem to struggle to adapt to school life, seem way too relaxed about learning and surprise everyone by working side by side achieving great things with their fellow student as an adult. Trying to find something to help every child reach their potential is a challenge in a school of almost 500 students. Sitting in a classroom all day is not for everyone. Thats why we have Our Place behind the Pre-primary classes. This is our hands on area. In this area we have our vegetable garden, worm farm and composting bins. This educates children about how the environment works, how the seasons develop and change, and how we can work with the environment. Our wood work shed introduces students to hand tools and the skills needed to use them. The joy of creating something from scratch and discovering something new that you are good at, can be just the confidence builder that a child needs to take the next step forward. Our play pod is running hot with lots of laughter, cooperation and problem solving as children work together to find new uses for what adults call useless junk. Fine intricate hand work is used in our main building creating unique jewellery and art work in big and small groups. This is also where the chaplains office is. We do lots of one on one activities such as art, model aeroplanes, jigsaws, chess and listening. Lots of listening. Not always easy to do as adults but an essential skill for any carer. Come down and take a look. Introduce your self, and get to know your school. Cheers, Chappie Hookin2 Hockey, Junior, High School and Senior Players Registration Day!! This new inclusion in the newsletter, Science Corner, will appear 2 or 3 times each term to let you know what your children are doing in science. All schools in Australia are now using the National Australian Curriculum for all subjects and this term we are doing Earth and Space Sciences. Later this year we will also cover Physical Sciences, Chemical Sciences and Biological Sciences. Each year level focuses on a different aspect of the broad theme. You might like to discuss with your child what they are studying in science this term. Year 1 - Weather, Patterns of events on Earth and in the sky e.g. Moon, Stars, Seasons. Year 2 - Earth's resources: focusing on water. Year 3 - How Earth's rotation and revolution around the Sun causes day / night / years. MANAGING STUDENT BEHAVIOUR

The key to this approach is that the child is given a choice at each step to follow directions or face increased consequences. Students making GOOD CHOICES are acknowledged for their efforts. For students making POOR CHOICES the following consequences apply ~
STEP 1 Student refuses to follow directions. Verbal warning. STEP 2 Student still refuses to follow directionsIn-class consequence eg Time Out area. STEP 3 Student still refuses to follow directionsOut-of-class consequence eg Buddy Class. STEP 4 Student still refuses to follow directionsRED CARD is sent to the office. Parents will be requested to attend school. SUSPENSION Students will be immediately suspended for verbal abuse of staff and/or violence towards staff or students.

WHAT IS BULLYING? Bullying is when a student or group keep picking on another student. They try to hurt them physically or emotionally. The behaviour is deliberate and repeated. A fight or disagreement between equal students is not bullying. HOW TO STOP BULLYING Tell an adult, it is not dobbing to ask for help. Both victim and those bullying will be counselled and supported. Do not be a by-stander; if you witness bullying try to stop it or report it. IF YOU ARE BULLYING Step 1: Warning Step 2: In school isolation and counselling at recess and lunch, parents will be notified Step 3: For continued breaches students will be suspended.

RE-ENTRY FOLLOWING SUSPENSION Students returning from suspension must be accompanied by an adult and will attend the Intervention Centre (Room 20) where an Individual Behaviour Management Plan will be developed and implemented.
