GENERALINFORMATIONABOUTTHEWESTERNDISTRICT
Therearethree(3)districtcourtsintheStateofLouisiana:Eastern28U.S.C.98(a);Middle28 U.S.C.98(b);andWestern28U.S.C.98(c).TheWesternDistrictisthelargestcourtasfaras area,consistingof42parishesboundedontheeastbytheMississippiandAtchafalayaRivers, onthenorthbytheStateofArkansas,onthewestbytheStateofTexas,andonthesouthby theGulfofMexico.TheWesternDistrictisdividedinto5administrativedivisions:Alexandria, LakeCharles,Lafayette,Monroe,andShreveportwithcourtheldinallfivedivisionaloffices.

StateandFederalCourtDifferences
FEES:Instatecourt,adepositmustbemadepriortofilingasuitandthereisachargeforeach documentfiledinthecase.Infederalcourt,thereisaninitialfilingfeeforthefilingofthe Complaint.Generally,thereisnofeeforfilinganysubsequentpleadingsinthecourtexceptfor anoticeofappeal. JURIES:Instatecourt,adepositmustbemadetocoverthecostofajury.Infederalcourt, thereisnochargewhenapartyrequestsajury.However,ifthepartiesfailtotimelynotifythe Courtofasettlementandthejurorsappearneedlessly,oneorbothofthepartiesmaybe assessedjurycostsunderLR54.1.
