march 23 2013 comparing hyptheses what is the best explanation of the 3 facts?

expactations --> Reasonable Certainty

have method have facts

4 criteria for the best explanation: 1. Explanatory Scope can the hypothesis account for all of the facts? 2. Explanatory Power does the hypothesis account for facts without forcing them to fit? does the hypothesis account for facts without excessive ambiguity? 3. Less ad hoc is the hypothesis based on non-evidenced assumptions? 4. Plausibility is the hypothesis compatible with other knowledge known to be true?

Hallucinations Hypothesis that the disciples was having hallucinations this is the most common that is from the non believers, seems like plausible for a while. hallucinations comes from different thought, it is a wrong perception, different from illution. hallucination is a dellution. group hallucination is extremely rare!!!! 1. Jesus Death by Crucifixion (v) 2. Appearences to Disciples (x) 3. Appearence to Paul (x) then 2 and 3 cannot be explained by the hallucinations hypothesis. why do many scholars still take this hallucination hypothesis? because they're n ot historians and they do not have methods. this hypothesis is ad hoc

Disciples Lied and Stole Body

1. Jesus Death by Crucifixion (v) 2. Appearences to Disciples (x) 3. Appearence to Paul liars are poor martyrs. while most of the Disciples are martyrs. while historically all of the disciples believe the appearance of Jesus for his resurrection. and Paul believed, while he was a sceptic. it is lack of explanatory scope.

Jesus Only Appeared Dead like the Moslem said. it also appeared in Apocalyptic of Peter. 1. Jesus Death by Crucifixion (may) 2. Appearences to Disciples (x) 3. Appearence to Paul (may) if Jesus was coma, and did not die then the tomb was actually very cold, while t he coma person needs warm. and if he was strong enough, there was a guardiances in front of the tomb and he could be tortured again and was not able to appear to the disciples. this hypothesis has poor explanatory scope.

COMPARING MORE HYPOTHESES Wishful Thinking: Ehrman (2006), 29 - Death of Jesus - Christians turned to their scripture to try and understand it - Jesus 'vindicated by God' - Christians came to think of Jesus as one who.. came to be exalted to heaven, m uch as Elijah and Enoch - But if Jesus is exalted, he is no longer dead, and so Christians started circu lating the story of his resurrection. if Jesus is exalted without dead, and He would never be the firstfruit who died. but howcome he appeared to Paul and the Disciples? 1. Jesus Death by Crucifixion (v) 2. Appearences to Disciples (x) 3. Appearence to Paul (x)

lack of explanatory scope!

RESURRECTION HYPTHESIS 1. Jesus Death by Crucifixion (v) 2. Appearences to Disciples (v) 3. Appearence to Paul (v) it has great explanatory scope it fits with explanatory power it is ad hoc
