onCue IR Learner & Programmer: BPC-HPLIR

Introduction
The onCue BPC-HPLIR is a dual-function handheld tool designed for use with the Crestron onCue BPC-8 Basic Presentation Controller. It is both a full featured IR learner, providing a simple means to learn IR commands from third-party remotes via the Device Learner tool, as well as a configuration loader that transfers configuration files created using the onCue BPC-8 Tool directly to the BPC-8. The BPC-HPLIR enables the installer to upload a single configuration to any number of BPC-8 controllers, requiring mere seconds to transfer the file via a simple optical cable (included). There is no need to remove the BPC-8 from the wall or even remove its faceplate, and one configuration can be used repeatedly for any number of identically equipped rooms, affording quick and easy setup of each room without any need to carry around a laptop.

Setup
Installation
The only installation procedures required for the BPC-HPLIR are to insert the supplied 9-Volt battery into the compartment in the rear of the unit, and to connect the supplied fiber cable to the IR Output Coupler port. Fiber Cable

To connect supplied fiber cable to the BPC-HPLIR, loosen the output coupler knob, insert the cut end of the cable, and re-tighten the knob.

To connect the fiber cable to a BPC-8, remove the clear plastic dust cap from the connector end of the cable. Insert the cable into the optical cable access port on the lower right of the BPC-8 faceplate. Retain the dust cap to protect the cable when not in use.

Uploading and Upgrading

Crestron recommends using the latest programming software and that each device contains the latest firmware to take advantage of the most recently released features. However, before attempting to upload or upgrade it is necessary to establish communication. Once communication has been established, files (for example, programs or firmware) can be transferred to the control system (and/or device). Finally, program checks can be performed (such as changing the device ID or creating an IP table) to ensure proper functioning.

Establishing Communication
Use Crestron Toolbox for communicating with the BPC-HPLIR; refer to the Crestron Toolbox help file for details. There is a single method of communication: USB communication. USB Communication
PC Running Crestron Toolbox

USB

BPC-HPLIR

The COMPUTER port on the BPC-HPLIR connects to the USB port on the PC via the included Type A to Type B USB cable: 1. Use the Address Book in Crestron Toolbox to create an entry using the expected communication protocol (USB). 2. Display the BPC-HPLIRs System Info window (click the icon); communications are confirmed when the device information is displayed.

Firmware
Firmware files may be distributed from programmers to installers or from Crestron to dealers. Firmware upgrades are available from the Crestron Web site as new features are developed after product releases. One has the option to upload and upgrade via the Crestron Toolbox. For details on uploading and upgrading, refer to the Crestron Toolbox help file.

Operation
The first step in developing a configuration program for the BPC-8 is to use the onCue BPC-8 Tool to determine if the device to be controlled is already contained in the Crestron Database. If it is not, use the BPC-HPLIR and the Device Learner tool to create a new IR file and save it to the User Database, then use the onCue BPC-8 Tool to create the BPC-8 Configuration file. Refer to Learning Third-Party IR Codes below. If it is, use the BPC-HPLIR and the onCue BPC-8 Tool to develop a program for the BPC-8. Refer to Developing onCue BPC-8 Projects on page 14. NOTE: The onCue BPC-8 Tool and Device Learner tool software programs are included with Crestron Toolbox, which is available at the Crestron onCue Web site: www.crestron.com/oncuesoftware.

Learning Third-Party IR Codes

When used in conjunction with an IR learner such as the Crestron BPC-HPLIR, the Device Learner tool allows users to create and test custom IR driver files, and to save the learned files in the User Database where they can be uploaded to the BPC-HPLIR for subsequent upload to the BPC-8. The following paragraphs provide an overview of the functions available via the Device Learner tool. For detailed instructions, refer to the Device Learner help file.

Standard Operations Create New IR Files

1. Upon starting Device Learner, click New on the File menu. 2. Use the Device Description button to fill out details about the device to be controlled. 3. Use the Remote Buttons button to configure buttons and corresponding standard commands. The list of buttons will be based on the device listed in step 2. 4. Use the Crestron BPC-HPLIR to learn the remote button functions.

Learn Remote Button Functions

Use the Remote Buttons button to learn IR functions as follows: 1. Set up the IR learner and remote (refer to the Crestron IR learner's hardware documentation). The components should be positioned close to each other, on a level surface, and should not move.

2. On the Remote Buttons table, click the desired button (to multi-select press the Ctrl or Shift key) and click Learn. -orClick Learn All to learn all the buttons in the table. 3. Following the prompts on the "Learn IR" dialog box, press the specified button on the remote for about 1 second. Depending on the function, you may be prompted to press and release the button again. If the button is multi-code you will be prompted to press the button multiple times. 4. Continue pressing and releasing the button as prompted until the button is learned. The dialog box will show a green circle icon next to the button name when the button is learned. 5. If you are learning multiple buttons or all buttons, click Next to continue to the next button. You can skip buttons or cycle between them by clicking Next and Previous. 6. Click Close when all buttons are learned. Repeat the above steps for any additional buttons that need to be learned. 7. Save the file to your user database.

Edit an Existing IR File

Open an existing IR file from the Crestron Database, User Database, or elsewhere. NOTE: The onCue BPC-8 interface module, BPC-8-IMC, does not support simultaneous IR and RS-232 Control. That is, an IR driver can not be stacked together with a 1-way serial driver. Multiple IR devices are supported. For more information, refer to the onCue BPC-8 Tool help file.

Advanced Operations Remote Button Operations

The Remote Buttons button enables controls that allow you to add custom buttons, remove buttons, sort buttons by category or name, and format the button label text. The following operations on page 14 are accessed by right-clicking on a particular button.

Convert IR Pulse Type

Crestron BPC-HPLIR

You can convert an IR command from "Pulse and Hold" to "Pulse Only" and vice versa. This adjusts the header and repeater sections of the IR command to convert the selected button from repeating to non-repeating and vice versa.

Set Minimum Repeats

The minimum repeats setting guarantees that a Pulse and Hold IR command will be transmitted the specified number of times, even if the button that triggers the command is released quickly.

Pronto .CCF Data Format

You can learn IR codes by directly entering the data in CCF format.
