Gas Turbine - Performance Improvement

GT8BC/8C - C2 Compressor Upgrade

Extra Power for GT8BC and GT8C Gas Turbines

To improve plant performance and to stay competitive, existing gas turbine designs need to be periodically upgraded using stateof-the-art technology. Alstoms well-proven C2 compressor upgrade package increases the power output of GT8BC gas turbines by up to 2.5%, and of GT8C gas turbines by up to 4%, at unchanged turbine inlet temperature. This performance improvement is based on a well-proven highly efficient compressor airfoil design that is optimized, stage-by-stage, for efficiency and pressure ratio. The design of the C2 compressor allows additional power which is constantly available, independent of ambient conditions. The upgrade can be installed on-site, during a C-Inspection. Introduction In 1999 Alstoms brand-new C2 compressor was successfully installed in the GT8C engine at Martinlaakso, Finland. All expected performance values were achieved and one year later in Birr, Switzerland, first firing occurred of Alstoms GT8C2 engine with the new C2 compressor. Since then the turbine with

its improved compressor has proven its performance in several power plants, and the C2 compressor upgrade package has been implemented in a number of plants worldwide. Alstoms entire GT8C2 fleet and several upgraded plants are proving the success of this compressor. The C2 compressor upgrade will increase the power output of a GT8BC gas turbine by up to 2.5% and of a GT8C, by up to 4%. At the same time, its state-of-the-art blading design optimizes part-load operation. No modifications are required to the rotor, number of stages, or compressor casing, keeping the scope as narrow as possible to minimize the unit's downtime.

Customer benefits Up to 2.5% - 4% additional power output delivered solely from the improved compressor airfoil design Additional power is permanently available, independent of ambient conditions Optimized part-load operation Well-proven design, no additional systems or power augmentation measures are required No impact on hot gas path component lifetime

Increase your revenues by upgrading your GT8BC or GT8C with the C2 compressor.

Technical Concept The C2 compressor upgrade increases the air and consequently, the gas mass flow through the unit, increasing the engines power output at unchanged firing temperature (TIT). No additional thermal loading of hot gas parts occurs, and therefore there is no impact on component lifetime.

Higher performance results from a state-of-the-art, field-proven 12-stage compressor airfoil design, and is achieved without sacrificing any of the unit's excellent reliability, availability and maintainability (RAM). The latest 3-D numerical calculation tools were used to optimize the compressor front block, which is largely responsible for compressor mass flow and efficiency. Blades and vanes are of state-of-the-art Controlled Diffusion Airfoil (CDA) design, which replaces the existing DCA (Double Circular Arc) profile. This highly efficient blade design has been adapted from the innovative compressor developed for Alstoms GT24/GT26 gas turbines. Extensively validated, this design is successfully used in a large number of Alstom gas turbines worldwide, such as GT11N2 engines, and the GT11NMC compressor upgrade.

Scope of work The upgrade package includes a completely improved, field-proven 12-stage compressor (blades, vanes, VIGV, and required assembly parts). There are no repeating stages; the design of each stage has been aerodynamically optimized to maximize the compressor's efficiency and pressure ratio. The implementation of an additional 3rd blow-off stage is included to optimize start-up behavior.

Alstom's OEM know-how has resulted in an upgrade package that requires only minor additional modifications, and can be implemented on-site within the framework of a regular CInspection. For GT8B units, the C2 Compressor upgrade requires that the complete C turbine is installed.

Engine field experience Alstom has extensive operational experience with the C2 upgrade package. The first GT8C-C2 compressor upgrade was successfully implemented in 1999 at Martinlaakso, Finland. All expected performance values were achieved, validating the new compressor design.

The package has since been implemented in a number of GT8C and GT8BC plants worldwide. Alstoms entire GT8C2 fleet is also proving the success of this upgrade.
