Adventure To Norway!
I began my study of Omega-3 fish oils about 10
years ago.  The research even then was astounding. The
health benefits of Omega-3’s for the skin, the joints,
the brain, the heart and the cardiovascular system
were so impressive that it was surprising that none
of my peers, medical doctors, and even nutritionists
seemed as excited as I was.

Now, a decade later, these crucial Omega-3’s from
fish oil are exploding in popularity. You regularly see

media. There are scores of books about them including
the best sellers:  The Wrinkle Cure, The Omega Zone
and The Perricone Promise. All of which are inspiring
nutritionists and doctors to discuss the benefits of

Watch Out For The Wobbly
Boat!
The next morning when he arrived at the dock, he
strode over to me like a man 30 years his junior. With
a distinctly youthful look in his eye, he gave me a firm
handshake, and offered a smile that told me he was a
man still at the peak of his game.  He then led me down
a snowy dock, towards the fjord next to the Omega-
3 Refinery, while describing how he was a herring
fisherman for 60 years.  And as you can see from the
photograph he then stepped onto a small row boat.  He
wanted me to join him, but with the water in the
fjord about 35 degrees, and with the boat rocking
precariously in the water, I decided against it. “What
are they doing to be so vibrant and healthy in their 70’s
and 80’s?”. This is the intriguing question I would ask
myself again and again.

Continuing with my field research, the next super
Norwegian I met was even more incredible, if that’s
possible.  One of the workers at the plant asked me if

I would like to meet his 87 year old “grand dad.”  So
off we went to the island of HarØya, 7 nautical miles off
Brattvåg, on one of the most scenic boat rides that I’ve
ever taken.  Majestic snow-covered mountains exploded
out of the pristine sea water, painting a picture only
mother nature could have conceived.
Arriving at our destination, 87 year old Lars UlsnØx
came striding toward us on the snow- covered dock,
as sure-footed as a man in his forties. He proceeded
to take us on a brisk walk through a quaint village, past
stone-roofed cottages, and ultimately into his lobster
house. Lars has been lobster fishing for over 70 years.

younger.)
Inside the lobster house he showed me his small
boat and tossed me a 17 kilo wooden lobster trap
(which is about 37 lbs). Through my interpreter, he then
explained that the traps were unusually light because it
is not lobster season. But once the traps are in the fjord
for a few days, the wood swells and absorbs water.
Between the weight of the trap, the lobsters and the
bait, the traps can weigh over 60 lbs. And here he was
at 87 years of age, pulling them right out of the fjord,
without having to use a winch!

THE NORWEGIAN SECRET: fish
oil
Lars and Lauritz eat fish about 10 times a week,

 to several studies. It’s interesting to note that the rich
supply of DHA in human breast milk is believed to be
the reason that breast fed babies develop higher IQ’s
than babies that are fed formula that is not enriched
with DHA.
Omega-3 and your brain
One of my favorite studies on DHA was done by
Myanaga and Yonimora.  It was presented at the 1996
International Conference on Highly Unsaturated Fatty
Acids In Health and Nutrition.  These researchers were
studying the effect that DHA had on a certain type of
brainwave called P300.  This brainwave is linked to
memory and learning. The faster the rate of P300, the
more efficiently the brain is functioning. The P300 rate
declines as we age and is much slower in people with

dementia. To demonstrate the effects that DHA has on
brain function the researchers hooked 26 volunteers up
to electrodes and measured their base P300 rate.  They
then gave them supplemental DHA. Two hours later
they measured their P300 rates again and this time
the P300 rate was significantly faster! Wow!  In just
two hours a significant change took place that was mea-
sured by electronic instrumentation.  So as you can see

During my meeting with Dr. Leiv BjØrndal, the town
doctor in Ulsteinvik, a town not far from Brauttvåg, we
