I.

PREAMBLE :

No solution to any interior design problem can be considered as ideal due to ever changing human needs and behavior, brought about by socio economic factors and advances in sciences and technology. This, thus makes demands on the interior designers who are primarily concerned with the planning of human environment. Technology has advanced so rapidly over the last few years and will continue to do so at such fast rate, that human living patterns, their needs and behavior change thereby posing even greater design challenges for interior designers.

II.

INTRODUCTION :

The Fourth Year interior design students (Semester Viii) are required to prepare a Design Thesis in subject approved by the thesis coordinator. The Design Thesis is to be prepared under the guidance of an advisor / guide to a strict time schedule given in Annexure II.

III.

OBJECTIVES OF THIS DESIGN THESIS PROGRAMME. :

The main objective of the Design Thesis programme is to provide an opportunity to each student to do original study and research and develop a subject of her own choice, independently which adds significantly to her knowledge of Interior design. It may be a hypothetical problem but the presentation and solution must show an analytical understanding of the problems involved and a logical and technical competence to apply these in various disciplines of Interior design.

IV.

CHOICE AND SCOPE OF SUBJECT :

The Design Thesis subject is to be selected by the student in consultation with and the approval of the thesis coordinator Students are advised to limit the size and scope of their subject so that the entire range of the subject can be covered in depth within the stipulated time, i.e. two semesters. The total built up area of the design solution for thesis shall not be less than approximately 500 sq. mts. Renewal and redevelopment projects and technical subjects requiring specialized study can be undertaken with proper guidance for the specialized consultant. Wholesale and irrelevant adoption of reports and drawing material from previous design theses or any other unacknowledged sources will not be accepted. The following list may help students to select a subject for her Design Thesis: 1. Residential 2. Transport Projects 3. Information Technology buildings, cost and structure oriented subjects like low cost housing etc. 8. Commercial Shops, Showrooms, Boutiques, Malls, Specialty Restaurants etc. The students shall intimate the topic to the concerned faculty member along with the Annexure I, duly complete conveying the approval and consent of the guide. SYNOPSIS OF DESIGN THESIS :

After finalization of the topic, the student is required to submit a synopsis which shall include: 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. The introduction the subject and appropriate title. Reasons for selecting the particular subject. Aims and objectives of the Design Thesis study. Source of Information on programme requirement and data collection. Information about possible site locations. Scope of project with details of stage wise approach to project as given under item VI( a,b,c) . 6a. Programme establishment. 6b. Research and data collection. 6c. Case studies.

VI.

PREPARATION OF DESIGN THESIS PROGRAMME :

The design process starts with the preparation of a programme. The programme should be complete in all respects and must include all the functional elements and their specific requirements. Systematic procedure for preparing and developing a programme is as follows: FIRST STEP Programme Establishment and Analysis. Before starting any work the validity and scale of a programme must be verified and checked. As soon as the functions are listed, the programme is analyzed and the elements re arranged so that the allied users are brought together. This requires analysis of functions as well their inter relationships and results in a new heading under which all the uses are classified. FOURTH YEAR INTERIOR DESIGN, DESIGN THESIS 2010-2011. ANNEXURE II Research data collection. THIRD STEP. Case studies. economic aspects, technical requirements, climate etc. to be compiled. Projects of similar nature which are either executed or proposed to be implemented are to be studied. The suggested programme, philosophy and the systems of zoning / space articulation and aesthetic qualities are carefully examined and their merits and limitation are evaluated. A minimum of three case studies should be done. One of these could be a book case study.

GUIDELINES FOR CASE STUDIES: SITE ANALYSIS AREA ANALYSIS RELATIONSHIP OF SPACES BUILDING SYSTEMS. VISUAL ANALYSIS. FOURTH STEP Programme Development And Analysis. Location plan, site plan and site sections, orientation, approach, design constraints, vehicular movement, parking and landscape. Site area, ground floor coverage, built up area, distribution of built up area activity wise, circulation area / usable area , Activity organization, public and private areas, and movement patterns. Structure. Light and Ventilation (artificial and natural ), services. Volume, massing and form, solids and voids, use of materials, building character etc. The list is modified in view of the research and design programme finalized (Requirement, a schematic diagram is prepared in which all the functions are zoned according to their priorities and their inter relationships. The plan still remains in an abstract form and is developed to accommodate desired circulation pattern and the system of services. Areas for the individual spaces are developed in the form of area diagram based on the nature of activities, number of users, intensity of use etc. . The student must now under take site selection. Site selection must be confirmed after evaluation in terms of I) Area available II) Desirable characteristics III) Access IV) Location V) Existing / proposed land use of adjacent area and their relation to the proposed project VI) Byelaws, zonal development plan etc. The selected site is analyzed. Areas with identical / varied characteristics and existing features are classified and their potential / limitations for specific use is assessed. The features analysis includes : i) Manmade features buildings, roads, services. Etc. ii) Natural features - trees, land forms, rock outcrops, water bodies, soil and sub soil water table etc. iii) Visual features, areas with desirable / undesirable views etc. iv) Topographical features high , low , flat and steep in terms of contours.

VII. DESIGN DEVELOPMENT AND SYNTHESIS: (To be phrased in the following manner)
a)

DESIGN OBJECTIVES , PRIORITIES AND ZONING:

After programming and site analysis, the student must out line a set of design objectives, priorities. A schematic plan should then be prepared to suitable scale in which all the various functional elements are dimensioned and zoned in consideration of the activity, structure, functional inter relationship, climatic conditions and site analysis b)

SKETCH DESIGN / FORMULATION OF CONCEPT:

The three dimensional study begins. A design concept is outlined and functions are assigned. Desirable levels and locations are indicate in sketch plans, elevations and sections, and are drafted to a suitable scale to incorporate the objectives outlined earlier. c)

DEVELOPMENT OF DESIGN:

The sketch design is carefully examined, developed and the necessary modifications are made in view of the following aspects: i) Building form and its sitting. ii) Overall zoning of functions. iii) Scale and character of spaces desired. iv) Inter relationship of areas / spaces, activity, structure. v) Circulation and services systems. vi) Building materials and structural systems. vii) Lighting, ventilation and air conditioning. viii) Out door spaces and their relation to covered areas. Submit modified sketch plans, elevations, sections and models to a suitable scale. d)

FINAL DESIGN:

Developed plans are scrutinized / analyzed and modifications as necessary are incorporated before final drawings. The scheme is presented in the form of plans, elevations, sections, three dimensional sketches and model to a suitable scale. Illustrations and analytical studies are necessary to explain the design concept and may also be included in the final presentation.

VIII.

DESIGN THESIS REPORT :

The design must be supplemented by a comprehensive report which out lines briefly the nature of the subject, its scope, a clear statement of goals and objectives of the

FOURTH YEAR INTERIOR DESIGN, DESIGN THESIS 2010-2011. ANNEXURE II case studies, analysis of the problem and the design concept. It should also contain appendices, statistical tables, relevant supporting material and a bibliography. This report should be precise and relevant. Unnecessary reference to unrelated aspects must be avoided. Reference to reports of previous year books and periodicals etc. must be carefully acknowledged in the bibliography of the report. The type written Design Thesis must be presented in neatly bound copies in duplicate, one copy of which will be retained by the college, the other shall be returned to the candidates. The size of the Design thesis volume must be A-4 size (trimmed 210mm X 297mm) on Sunlit Bond or equivalent paper with standard binding. The printed blank page of the certificate which shall be supplied by the college will be bound along with other type written pages in the beginning of the Design Thesis. This will be certified by the college authorities as authentication of the work and by the guide who has guided the work. The annexure sheet duly signed shall also be attached along with the certificate. The Index Page must contain the following sequence and paging in the volume must follow this sequence. Attach either reduced size Xerox copies or photographs of final drawings (if legible) or prints neatly folded to the size of the volume. a. Introduction b. Scope of the project. c. SELECTION OF GUIDE:

Each student shall select a Guide, who shall guide, monitor and evaluate the Design Thesis work stage wise. No Guide shall take up more than THREE students who are doing Design Thesis under Pune University. Any Interior designer registered with the Council Of Interior design with a minimum experience of 10 years in the field or 5 years experience in teaching, and having knowledge in the respective subject can be chosen as a Design Thesis Guide. The student is advised to contact the Guide well in advance before each stage of submission. In case of out of station Guides, the students make sure that stages as stated in Annexure II are complied with and no extension in time shall be granted to the student for having chosen an out station guide.

GENERAL INSTRUCTIONS:

The student shall get every stage submission assessed, approved and signed from her guide as per Annexure II before submitting at every stage. While submitting the respective stages, students shall not submit the stages already submitted. In case any clarifications are required, the Guide may contact the concerned faculty member. A detailed report on the submission evaluation will be issued to the student and a copy of the report will be sent to the guide. If the students work is not as per requirements of the thesis the institute reserves the right to reject the work submitted by the student with rejection memo and the reasons statement. The student has to submit the improved work within 15 days of rejection memo date. The students shall make two Annexure sheets, one will be submitted by the student along with each stage submission and will be attached to the final Design Thesis Report, and the other shall be kept in record by the guide with grades indicated for every stage submission. The Annexure copy of the Guide with complete grades shall be forwarded to the Principal in a sealed envelop on the completion of the Design Thesis and shall be taken as internal grades for viva voce. The grade percentages to be considered by the guide shall as follows: A+ B+ C+ Above 75% 65% to 69.99% 55% to 59.99% A B C 70% to 74.99% 60% to 64.99% 50% to 54.99%

Pass percentage is 50% of the total marks allotted for the subject, which comprise the combined marks given by the Internal and External and examiners. A total of 750 marks are allotted for Design Thesis, out of which 40% are given by Internal Examiner and 60% are given by external examiners at the time of viva voce. Each student shall receive one copy of these guidelines. She has to give one copy to her guide and a Xerox copy to be retained by the student. It shall be the duty of the student to inform the guide regarding submission dates and any modifications incorporated in the Design Thesis Programme.
