Earth Day Fill In The Blank

The Lean Green Clean Up Team

What is Earth Day?

Earth Day is an annual day on which events are held worldwide to demonstrate support for environmental protection. The person that created Earth Day was__________________________ Earth Day is on__________________every year. On Earth Day we remember to appreciate nature and learn ways to protect our environment.

The three Rs: Reduce, Reuse, Recycle

Reduce: means using fewer resources in the first place. o This is the most effective of the three R's and the place to begin. If we reduce the waste that we create then there will be less damage made to the environment. Reuse: No matter how much we try to reduce our waste, if we do not reuse resources then we will always be creating a lot of waste. o We should use items more than once, for example like saving our___________________________+___________for the next time that we need them. Recycle: Turning an item into another useful item. o When waste is eventually thrown away, separating items for recycling from other waste is important. o Recyclables include_______________________________________ and a surprising array of other materials. o Recycling means something is changed back to it's unmade nature, and made into something new. The three Rs, reduce, reuse, and recycle all help to_____________________ on the amount of waste we throw away. They conserve natural resources, , and energy. A land-fill is an area designated to receive all of the waste that we make.

Why is recycling so important?

There are billions of people that live on our earth. Each person on earth needs a place to live. We need power to make things work and places to grow food and raise animals. There are several things that we should do to preserve the land we live on, and the first steps are to learn how to reuse and recycle paper, plastic, aluminum, and glass.

With recycling, a large portion of our waste can be broken down into their original elements and be used to produce new materials. In this way, we can _____________________________________we discard into the environment, ie.___________________, and even conserve raw materials. The amounts of resources on the earths surface are finite. Fossil fuels and metals cannot be replenished by nature within our lifetime. And the more we extract these resources the less we leave for ourselves, and our future generations. In 2009, Americans produced enough trash to circle the earth___________________.

How much do Americans throw away?

Americans represent 5% of the , but generate 30% of _______________________ Americans throw away enough garbage every day to fill ___________________________ which if they lined up end to end for an entire year they would stretch half way across the moon!

Facts about Recyclables:

Aluminum: o Aluminum takes to fully degrade in a landfill. o Recycling saves enough energy to run a TV for ______________ Glass: o Glass takes to fully degrade in a landfill. o The US throws away enough glass every week to fill a 1,350 foot building. o Glass can be recycled an number of times. Plastic: o Plastic takes to degrade in a landfill. o Enough plastic is thrown away each year to circle the earth four times.
