Date: 20th September 2011 Subject: Biology Class: Grade 9 No.

of students: 21 Duration of lesson: 1hour 10 minutes Unit topic: Cells Lesson Topic: Specialized Cells Strategies: Lecture-Discussion, Direct Instruction, and Co-operative Learning. General Objectives: Students should gain knowledge about specialized cells. Specific Objectives: From the slides shown, students should be able to: 1. Identify different types of specialized cells. 2. Link structure of specialized cell to their function.

Previous Knowledge: Students are familiar with the grade 8 science syllabus. Summary of Content: Specialized cells perform specialized functions in multicellular organisms. Groups of specialized cells cooperate to form a tissue, such as a muscle. Different tissues are in turn grouped together to form larger functional units, called organs. Each type of cell, tissue, and organ has a distinct structure and set of functions that serve the organism as a whole. Some of the specialized cells are fat cells like: muscle cells and bone cells,

Red blood cells, these dont have nucleus (that stores the information) White blood cells, these fight infection and kill germs. Lots of other cells are important too like lung cells (these have air pockets to help you breathe and they clogg up if you smoke, Nerve cells (these are in your brain), sperm cells (these have tails to swim a long way quickly and have heads to stick to the egg) and finally female reproduction cells (egg cells) these live in the ovary.

Instructional Materials: Computer, and Multimedia Projector. Procedure: Step 1. (10 minutes) Teacher introduces the lesson and will lead a question and answer session to revise the previous lesson on specialized cells. Step 2. (50 minutes) Teacher will develop the lesson. Teacher show presentation on specialized cells Students are asked to come to the front and bring pictures they have of different specialized cell from their homework and explain how these cells are special. Teacher helps students to relate the special structure to special function of the different cells. Step 3. (10 minutes) Teacher will show different video clips of specialized cells performing their functions. Evaluation: Teacher: The class went according to plan. I employed direct questioning and so students were allowed to tell about what they had researched. The lesson was delivered and received well. Student: Students were excited and interested in the lesson and all participated. Students who did their homework were more interested as they were prepared. Lesson: The lesson was good students were allowed to ask questions and were motivated to learn.
