Part P1.

1 Prepare and implement a plan for collection of primary and secondary data for the given problem. In this assignment it consists of collecting primary data. Primary data is data that is going to be used for a specific purpose. Secondary data was also available from the records that some business had available. The specific purpose in this assignment is to collect data and make a decision whether the data collected supports or refutes the politicians claim. The politician claimed that external crisis have little impact on the labour turnover rate in Trinidad and Tobago. He claimed that businesses continue to hire even though some employees are being sent home or leaving their jobs of their own will; resulting in constant labour turnover rates over the period 2005 2009 and also claims that this pattern will continue for at least two (2) more years which is till the year 2011. The plan to collect this data is to design a questionnaire with five (5) simple questions. I will create a frame or list of businesses that will be used. This frame will contain at least ten (10) businesses. From that list of ten (10), six (6) businesses will be chosen due to familiarity and an interview and observation of the owners dealing with the business will be questioned with questions from questionnaire that was designed. These questions will relate to getting answers that will help in calculating the labour turnover rate for those specific years 2005- 2009. The data collected will then be put together and calculated to find out the labour turnover rate and will then decide whether the data collected supports or refutes the politicians claim.

P 1.2 The survey methodology is in the form of observation, questionnaires and an informal interview. This interview will just ask the questions from the questionnaires and also help in breaking the ice with the owners. The questionnaire will consist of (5) five questions. These questions will get straight to the point of what I want to accomplish in finding out. The questions asked are not in-depth so the owner would not feel uncomfortable in answering. The questions would also be repeated to find out the years 2005 to 2009.The frame or list that was prepared consisted of ten (10) businesses, which was short listed and the best six (6) were chosen. The six (6) that was chosen was due to the fact that they were small to medium sized businesses; the data will be much easier to collect because of the size of the businesses. Also the businesses were located close to my home location and the owners were familiar with me. This would have been an advantage in collecting accurate information from the respondents. The frame/ list of businesses 1. GPR Hardware and Supplies Ltd. 2. The Corner double vendor. 3. Rite Price Grocery. 4. Eidectic Ltd- a small advertising business. 5. V & Vs Mini Mart. 6. Golden Gate Restaurant.

7. The Wall BBQ Shed. 8. Lalos Supermarket. 9. Ginas Stationery Store. 10. Rajs Parts. The businesses used were numbers 1, 2,3,4,5 and 7 P1.3 Questionnaire 1. How long your business was is in existence? 2. How many people were employed at the start of the year? 3. How many left within that year? 4. How many did you end up with at the end of that year? 5. How many new people did you hire? Questions 2-5 were repeated to find out the figures for the years 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008 and 2009. This questionnaire was designed in way to make it easy for the collection of the necessary data. The questions asked are important in collecting that specific data which is needed. The simplicity of the questions was designed to make it easy and understandable towards the respondent. The answers should be able to be given in a quantitative form which is in numbers or figures. With these questions the data collected will be close to or even the exact figures due to the fact that the

questions are straight forward, short, easy and understandable. One disadvantage with the questionnaire was the owners found it to be a bit tedious when trying to collect the data for five years consecutively.

P.2.1 Table were made to summarise and represent the data collected. From these tables the graphs were created and also the calculation of mean and mode. The labour turnover rate was also calculated for each of the five (5) years for each business. 1. GPR Hardware and Supplies- analyses of the data collected From the data collected the graph was created. GPR hardware and supplies graph represents the labour turnover rate for the periods 2005 to 2009 with a 2 year forecast till the year 2011. The business was in existence since the year 1998.The graph shows that the labour turnover rate for GPR hardware is low because the line on the graph goes in a downward direction. The 2 year forecast continues to decrease. From the table created with the data you could see that they hired new and replacements and it decreased as the years went by. At the beginning of the year 2005 they hired replacements plus extra employees and coming down to the years 2009 you could see a significant decrease in the amount of employees they hired. The mean or average of the 5 year period was calculated and the figure was 12.5. The mode was also found and the figure was the number 3. From the information collected the politicians claim refutes because according to the

graph and data collected for GPR hardware and supplies they may have been affected by the external crises because the figures of new people hired went down as the years past. 2. The Corner Doubles Shed- analyses of data collected The corner doubles shed was in existence since the year 2000 and the data collected was put on an information table and a graph. This graph shows that this business started with little employees and as the years went they began to hire more employees some for replacements and some as new employees. The line on the graph goes in a slightly upward direction which means that the labour turnover rate is increasing but not drastically because the size of the business is relatively small. From the data it was found that if one employee leaves the business they hire one extra new person between the years 2005-2009. The mean was calculated for the labour turnover rate and the figure was 27.59. The mode was also found and the figure that occurred the most was 2. From the information found, it supports the politicians claim because this business was not affected by the external crisis and continues throughout the years to hire more employees. 3. Rite Price Grocery- analyses of data collected Rite price grocery was in existence since the year 1985. From the data collected for this business, the graph created shows a trend line moving in an upward direction which means that the labour turnover rate is increasing. In some years the business hired more new employees than what left and other years they hired less employees than what left during that specific year. The reason for this may be that the type of business like a grocery employees are always leaving and coming back. It could also be how successful the business is within those years. The mean of the labour turnover rate was calculated and that figure was 11.81. The mode was also calculated

and that figure was 17. This business supports the politicians claim due to the fact that the line on the graph moves increasingly in a upward direction and by how the business operated and hired more employees throughout those years they were not affected by the external crisis and business went on as normal.

4. Eidectic Ltd- analyses of data collected Eidectic Ltd was in existence since the year 1997. From the data collected the labour turnover rate was calculated and plotted on a graph. This graph shows that trend line going in a downward direction which means that the labour turnover rate is low in this business. The size of the business may be an important factor because it is relatively small, so when a person leaves the business hires to just replace employees. As the business grew they began to hire more employees but by just one or two employees within a specific year. The mean or average was calculated and the figure turned out to be 20. The mode was also found and the figure was 1, which occurred the most. From the information on the graph and table provided, this would prove that the business refutes the politicians claim and the business was affected in some ways by the external crisis. 5. This company was in existence since the year 2001. From the information collected a table was created and a graph was plotted. From the information on the graph, the trend line shows the labour turnover rate for the year 2005-2009 is slightly in a downward

direction and it also showing a two (2) year forecast. This trend line moving towards a downward direction means that the labour turnover rate is decreasing but not by much. This minimart has nearly the same amount of leavers as the same amount of new employees hired. The business hires just to replace employees that left. The mean or average was calculated and the figure was 18 and the mode was also found and that figure was 2 which occurred the most. This data refutes the politicians claim because the business hires just what they need and the labour turnover rate is low. This business may be affected by the external factors mentioned by the politician. 6. The Wall BBQ Shed- analyses the data collected This business was in existence since the year 1998. The data collected was put in a table and used in a graph. This graph shows that the trend line is moving in an upward direction which means that there is a increases in labour turnover rate. For the years 2005 to 2009 the business continues to hire more new employees and replacements. The mean was calculated and the figure was 23.79 and the mode was also found which was the number two (2). From the graph information this business supports the politicians claim due to the fact that they continue to hire more people which may suggest that the business is not affected by the external crisis.

Executive summary
The questions asked in the interview were relevant to get the proper information to calculate the labour turnover rate and the questionnaire was made in a simple and understandable way for the respondent. From the information gathered and the analyses of all the businesses used the conclusion overall would be a fifty-fifty (50/50) due to the fact that six businesses were used and three (3) supported the politicians claim and the other three (3) refutes the politicians claims. All organisations have different factors that affect them and the labour turnover rate will vary according to the business. Some may or may not be affected by what the politician mention like terrorism, natural disasters and the recent financial meltdown. Business cannot control if employees leave of their own free will or if they are fired it will still affect the businesses labour turnover rate. Businesses have no choice but to either employ new employees or not to at all. The 2 year forecast proved that the if the business has a low labour turnover rate it will continue in that same direction until the year 2011 and if the business has a high labour turnover rate it will also continue upward until the year 2011. This is what the 2 year forecast showed and proved on the graph.
